My daughter is 10 months today and has a horrable diper rash for about 1.5 weeks now, I have used neosporian, aveno diper rash crean, vasoline, and bathed her in baking soda and water, nothing is working.. Any ideas? She is pain when I wipe her to change her diper which I am doing very ofer to keep it dry..
THANK YOU to everyone with all of their wonderul ideas... I ended up this morning taking her to see her dr.. She has had mrsa withch is a bacterial form of staff infection when she was 7 weeks old it is VERY deadly to children.. She had it in her diper area. We believe she got it from the nicu when she was born.. Anyways the dr was very concerned for the same reason because she will always be a carrier of it.. She gave her nystatin and silver sulfadiazine cream(precription only)... She told me to let her go all day today and tomarrow with no diper and to give her aveno oatmeal baths...Hope this all works....Thank you again .......This group is the most wonderful thing....

A., After the rash clears up, I would advise you to hose her down in the bath tub after she poops. It's a lot of work, I know, but that's what I've done since my two yr old was born and she's NEVER had a diaper rash. I use Balmex or Baby Aveno at night only occasionally and it seems to work. Good Luck!!! J. Mom of Sydney-two and a half.

Hi A.. I too had this problem with my son when he was about 11 months old. My pediatrician told me to use zync oxide only as his diaper rash cream. He said all the other stuff (balmex, butt paste, etc.) is no good for them. Also, he said until the rash goes away to stop using baby wipes as they just make it more painful for the child. He said use warm wash clothes and as much as possible let the baby sit in a warm sink of water as that is very helpful. I followed his instructions and within two days the rash was gone. Good luck!!!

The only thing that works with my little ones when they have horrible diaper rash is Bourdeux's Butt Paste. I know, funny name. It is a little over $4.00 for a pretty small tube but it works! My kid's nurse recommended it saying she uses it for her little one. You can find it at Walmart in the baby area. I'm sure other stores carry it too but I only buy it from there. Good luck!
I'm not sure if we are allowed to link to websites with products, so I will just tell you the name. Try "Angel Baby" Diaper Rash soap. I also use "Bottom Butter." It's organic and natural.
About once a month or every two, I put fresh garlic in my baby's bathwater. It is a natural antibiotic.
Also, try using a hand dryer set on COOL and LOW after each diaper change. If possible, leave her diaper off as long as possible to give her a chance to "air out." I did not use any diapers during the first two weeks (using a hospital bed pad) which is much easier when they are not mobile.
I also give my baby a few spoonfuls of Yogurt with live cultures about one a week (or so).
We use cloth diapers. I chose them because of health and environmental reasons. I believe they help the bottom "breath" better as disposables tend to "lock" everything in. We've experienced very few leaks with CDs and that was due to not wrapping the cover correctly versus the diaper, itself.
My daughter is almost 16 months old and has NEVER had a diaper rash. She has never even been red on the bottom. I can't pinpoint one specific action but believe it is all of them combined.
I hope your baby feels better soon.
Take care,
J.

Hi! Definitely have experience with this one. A few ideas: leave her diaper off for a while and let her hang out diaper-free. Try foregoing wipes for several days and just patting her dry with a very soft cloth like an old t-shirt (wet it with warm water if she's pooped). Burt's Bee's diaper cream was the best stuff we found. Put it on GENEROUSLY after changing, after her bottom is all dry.
best of luck to you and your little sweetie.

Hi A.....I have had so much experience on this topic. My son gets yeast infections everytime he is on antibiotics and it took forever for me to get this down to a science. First of all, try and figure out why she's getting the rash...diahrea - medicine, or just a plain rash....if it's from diahrea (sp?) - give her the BRAT diet (bananas, rice ,applesauce and toast) and each time you clean her...let the area dry and slather her with desitin (not the creamy - the 40% original desitin). If she is really red and the skin seems broken from the rash being so bad, first put neosporin and then desitin.....now, if it's super raw and raised bumps (also white-head looking, it's probably a yeast infection so you would want to put lotrimin cream 2 times/day (antifungal - in foot care aisle)under the desitin and destitin at each diaper change. For immediate redness relief you can use some hydrocortisone cream the first day to kick start the healing and again, desitin over that. So basically, the rule of thumb is ALWAYS desitin (original) and neosporin, lotrimin or hydrocortisone depending on how it looks. It sounds like it's probably a yeast infection because it has lasted so long. I would try to keep her out of diapers as much as possible (to dry out - like 15 minutes every diaper change). Then, use a little hydrocortisone, a litle lotrimin and DESITIN two times a day and the rest of the day, just DESITIN. During bath time, add a packet of aveeno oatmeal bath (the 100% colloidal oatmeal) to the bath water and use the baby aveeno hair/body wash. Demboro is another soak that the pediatrician has recommended to me. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like it would work well. It has a lot of soothing antiseptic properties in it. Also, there is this stuff called balenol that gets the diaper area clean if the wipes are not soft enough. I think it's in the cortisone section at the pharmacy. It's actually for the perianal area and I think it's geared towards people who need help cleaning around there. I use a cotton ball or pad and clean him with that if the wipes are hurting too much. It's a great thing to have if your daughter gets bad rashes. Good luck!!!!

Hi A.,
My son went through this once, and the Dr. told me to get something that is called Butt Cream. Yep, that is what it is called for real, and you know, in two days, the rash was gone, and it worked great. I think you can get this over the counter, but I cant be positive, because the Dr. gave me sample tubes. Call the ped and ask about it. You will be so surprised how good this works..
My kids are famous for diaper rash. What works for me is DRC, it is behind the pharmacy counter at Target. Load her little behind up with that then put some vaseline on top of it to coat it. I swear by this. When I do that it's usually gone the next day. Don't use wipes on her, rinse her off in the sink or use a soft washcloth on her.

It comes in a box with 3 single use bath packets. My moms just used part of a packet in the bath. It helped alot. And here, when I have their children, I change them every hour and use lots of powder. Please do not use wipes. Soft warm cloths work well. A little more work, but it doesnt hurt them.

Hi Annie,
Have you ever heard of Renew Intensive Skin Therapy? This lotion has cleared up the worse cases of eczema, psorasis and even rosacea. I'm sure the diaper rash, even if it's from teething, is no challenge for this lotion. An 8oz bottle is only $8.99. It even comes with a money back guarantee.
The wellness company I'm partnered with has exclusive rights to this lotion and it can only be purchased from their catalog or online. There's other inexpensive items, according to my wellness guide, that can also be used to help with diaper rash. If you'd like to know more or would like to browse the website, please contact me.

I agree that it sounds like it could be yeast. You can go to any drug store and get an antifungal cream that will clear it up in a couple days if that is what it is (these creams have various names but are usually in the foot section).
If it is a regular diaper rash, regular desitin or something else with that same ingredient (zinc oxide). Most of the stuff you mentioned only protects the skin from further irritation, won't help clear it up. My son always got the yeast rashes and the antifungal works wonders on rashes he had been battling for weeks. Also letting her air dry will help alot.

This has happened to my twins in the past year too. I took them to the doctor for it because the skin was starting to peel off. They gave me some yeast infection medicine for it, but it didn't work that well.. I stopped using wipes, which seemed to irritate it more. I only used a warm wash cloth, then patted them dry. Any moisture left just fed the rash. I stopped giving any sort of juice because the acid in that just made it worse. I put a layer of neosporin and tonz of that white diaper rash creme every time I changed them and after 4-5 days I started to see some improvement. If I stopped using that combo, it started up again at square one. It was horrible, they scream and squirm when I had to change their diaper. It took two people sometimes! I know what you are going through, it is terrible!

Wow! What a response! Guess we are ALL experts on this!
Here is a couple things to think about. First, when my boys would get rashes I would use a product called Aloe Vista. Here is a link to their products.
I would use the ointment and cleansing cream, but now I see they have a lot more products like wipes, etc.
Here's another thing to think about. My oldest was 6 months old and got "Hand, foot, and mouth disease" from his cousins, but his showed up first on his bottom as a horrible rash (his butt looked like raw hamburger). He did run a HIGH fever before he got the rash, and there was very little I could do for him even after knowing what he had.
Hope this info helps!

Hi A.,
Definitely try the Lotramin. My son has had several of these really bad diaper rashes usually caused when he's sick and is having diahrea. The doctor instructed us to clean the area gently (think blotting instead of wiping)with a wet washcloth (no wipes -- the chemicals they contain hurt too much) then coat the area heavily with Lotramin. Then cover the area with something like Aquaphor.
Also, the doctor said if the area begins to bleed, we had to bring him in. Well, the last rash my son had like this, it did begin to bleed ever so slightly but we were in NY and two days away from a long drive home. The lotramin and Aquaphor helped so much and so quickly that later that day there was no more bleeding and two days later we were able to drive home with no problems.
Good luck.

THat started to clear it up in less than 24 hours. Aquaphor was helpign a little before that, but this stuff was awesome--if your baby is truly miserable, a trip to the doctor is warranted, in my opinion. good luck!

Hello,
Personally for diaper rashes, I think the best creme is Desitin. However, the same thing happened to my daughter two years ago. Her rash actually started to bleed a little and would not go away. I finally took her into the doctor and it turned out to be a yeast infection which required an antibiotic creme. So, if your rash doesn't go away, and most cremes should help diaper rashes, you might want to get it checked out by your doctor to see if it's a yeast infection. J.

When my son was about a year old, he had an awful diaper rash that just wouldn't go away. His pediatrician told me to use Gold Bond powder when I changed his diaper and after his bath. I also left him out of his diaper for about 15 minutes after each diaper change, because the skin needs air to be healthy. I've used the Gold Bond lotion on his bottom, too. I thought it was a little weird at first but after two days his bottom went from being bloody (his poor bottom was literally raw) to being pink, and within a couple more days it was completely healed.
Make sure the wipes you are using are alcohol free and fragrance free -- the alcohol and frangrance BURN and can make the rash worse. You can also try using just a warm (wet) washcloth, though that isn't practical with a bowel movement! I used to buy the fragrance/dye/alcohol free baby wipes (I think I used Huggies Wipes if I remember right, my son is almost 6 so it's been a few years!) and when he had a rash, I would pre-rinse them in warm water - just in case.
One mom offered the idea of garlic in the bathwater - I've never tried it but it makes sense. Herbal remedies are oftentimes safer and just as effective. You can also try a sitz bath (just a couple inches of water) and swish it around her bottom. Adding chamomile or calendula to the water would probably help, too.
Someone else mentioned foods... excellent point. Has your son eaten anything new at all? If you are still breastfeeding, have you eaten anything different?

When I was in the prenatal classes the instuctor told us about Triple Creme or Triple Paste. At the time you would have to talk to the pharmacist at Walgreens about it because they kept it behind the counter (even though you don't need a prescription). I have purchased it in one store but the best place to go would be Walgreens. It worked like a charm. The rash was cleared up in a day.
I did realize via trial and error what was causing the rash. Everytime he gets a few servings of mandarin oranges in a close time fram he gets a rash. In addition, I think acidic foods like red sauces might cause it as well.
Good Luck!

The other thing that we did sometimes was to literally put a hair dryer on low and point it on her bottom. I think it was a comfort in keeping her dry and the sound soothed her too.

A couple people have mentioned the possibility already, but it may be a teething rash. If so, there's not a lot you can do to stop it, but wait it out. It makes for a great indicator that your child is teething though.
My son went through this. My daughter hasn't seemed to yet, but the vote's not entirely in yet, so I'm not placing any bets. With my son, I made sure to use the sensitive diaper wipes that wouldn't burn. Sometimes the spots on his bottom would break open and bleed - the pediatrician told me to put some neosporin on it to help prevent infection. DON'T combine neosporin with desitin though - it seemed to burn when I tried that. When it got bad enough to use the neosporin I used only that and I bought the stuff with pain reliever in it too. I also would generally give him a little children's tylenol too, when it got really bad.
We've had a problem with my son too, since he will sit for a while in poop and not tell me. I have a diminished sense of smell, so I have to check him at least every half an hour to make sure his pants are still clean!
If it is a teething rash - you'll have to get into a groove dealing with it. My mother-in-law said my husband had the same problem growing up and it showed up again when his adult teeth were coming in too!

Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's one "miracle cure" that works for everyone, but here's what we did. We use Desitin and have had no problems with diaper rash except for the time when my daughter would not let us change her diapers. At that point, she developed what I considered to be a pretty bad rash (having not been used to her having one), and it would not go away for several days. We ended up using Aquaphor, and it worked almost immediately. We also bathed our daughter 1-2 times a day in Aveeno Oatmeal bath which also helped tremendously.
