Question About Breakfast!

I have a 9 and a half month old daughter. We feed her a jar of fruit in the morning for breakfast. We have noticed lately that she gets hungry about 1 hour after breakfast. We give her her first bottle then. My question is what do other moms give their babies to "fill them up" in the morning?!! Oatmeal? Cereal? We want to have her off the bottle at her 1st birthday so we would like to stop crutching on the bottle! Thanks for any advice!

What can I do next?

I always gave my daughter some proteins in the morning. Ex: eggs, cheeses (my daughter loves cottage cheese) or sausage.

Hey S.,
At 9 months a jar really isn't enough. You could mix it with some rice cereal. My daughter is 8 months and that is what we do. Just think if she can drink an 8oz bottle then a 4oz or even a 6oz jar is a piece of cake. You can always put the milk or juice in a sippy cup and that will help with getting her off of the bottle. Hope this helps!!

Seems like you aren't feeding her enough at breakfast. Try Farina (warm oatmeal) or offer her a mashed up banana with cut up pancakes.

At 9 months my son was eating quite a bit... she def. needs some sustinance if you are not giving her a bottle as soon as she wakes up... cereal or oatmeal of some sort. Many of the baby books offer an ideal menu, let me know if you would like me to send you a few ideas, I'd be more than happy to!

P.S. My son was off the bottle the week of his 1st birthday, so there is hope!

Hey S.:
Okay, I am not sure if that is wrong or not, but, to me, a jar of fruit is not the best thing. I had two daughters and they are grown now, yet, I have a wonderful grandson and being a childcare provider, now at home, after being a Preschool Teacher in the centers, I have learned a lot, through the years... In any case, from an old fashioned Mom, here.... I learned what my Mom taught me, so, here goes... upon getting up, a small bowl of rice cereal or oatmeal, a 1/2 jar of fruit and about 4 ozs of milk or formula. Depending on your baby's weight, you may give the 6 ozs. Then lunch to follow about 4 hours later, but make it a complete meal, you know, dinner jar, fruit jar and juice... and so forth.. I hope all goes well for you and that the baby begins to feel a little bit fuller. Oh, my girls are now 22 and 30 and my grandson 3. I am 47 years old.

I upgraded to a jar of fruit mixed in their oatmeal at about 9 months. They will still be hungry an hour later, but maybe not as hungry.

Then I cut the milk in half.

Also, about 9 months I started on pancakes (Never any syrup) and eggs. (My children started solids at 3 and 4 months respectively per doctors orders).

Your daughter is probably just ready for a little more than the lightness of fruit.

~Best of luck! My children still don't really even eat despite their hunger! :O)

I use to feed my son cereal or oatmeal and fruit, and lil bit of juice or milk in a sippy cup. That use to hold him off pretty well.

At that point the bottle is still the most important. My daughter ate (and still does) so much. I would give her a bottle and usually fruit and/or cereal. She was able to easily transition to a sippy cup. At around 11 months I started doing 1/2 formula 1/2 whole milk in her bottle. That way at 1 she was introduced to whole milk. She is now 16 months and drinks anything and eats EVERYTHING.

Perhaps you need to feed your baby more than a jar of baby food in the morning. I fed my young one fruit, or yogurt, applesauce, toast and cereal. I'm assuming your child has some teeth for toast. Also, because my son has had constipation problems, I give him juice/water mix first thing in the morning and then breakfast about an hour later. He also gets another round of juice/water mix mid morning and sometimes some goldfish crackers. But then my son is about 20 months.

I give my son, who's 7months, a bowel of barley cereal and a jar of fruit. I still breastfeed so I'm not sure about the whole bottle thing. He also eats 2 jars (veggie andfruit) for lunch and then 2 jars for dinner (a "dinner jar" and a jar of fruit) for a snack during the day I give him cut up fruit, or those puffs (by gerber) or crackers. He's a hungry boy lol. Also I give him a cup with a straw or a sippy cup when he is eating "real" food.

I always fed my little ones oatmeal or rice cereal mixed with the fruit. They also both used to get toast, broken into small pieces, that they could "feed themselves", it helped with the hand/eye coordination.

When My daughter was that age she would get cereal or oatmeal, sometimes mixed with a little bit of fruit and a six ounce bottle, then she didn't eat again until lunch. Somehow it worked out that she always got bottles at mealtimes and the transition from a bottle to a cup was pretty easy, we got rid of the bottle right at 11 months and never looked back. I think part of it was that she never looked at the bottle as a comfort thing, simply as a way to get a drink. Anyway, cereal is pretty filling. Around ten months I started experimenting with other breakfast foods though, like toast, and hard boiled egg yolk, and fruit in small pieces.

Hi there I have a 8 month old daughter I feed her "Gerber oat meal " with baby fruit like...Gerber Bana-appl & pears she loves it she says humm after almost every bite. Then if she is still hungry I'll give her some yogurt (Stonyfeild Farm organic ) YOBABY The only kind I give her . It comes in different flavors and with cereal already in the yogurt. she loves it . And when she is eating I pretty-much give her all that she can eat at that time . Maybe that might help .So maybe if you give her cereal or yogurt with her fruit she might then be satisfyed , full etc.

When my daughter was a baby she loved (and still does) Yo Baby yogurts. They are completely natural, have all kinds of nutritional value and the consistency is perfect for babies. Plus they come in a variety of yummy flavors and are probably more filling than just fruit. Give them a try! You can find them in the Publix Greenwise Dairy section.

Good Morning S.!

I'm a first time mom of a beautiful 2yr. daughter. What I use to do is buy the Gerber Oatmeal Cereal and mix it with room temperature water then cut up half of a banana into small pieces and mix in the cereal. If you can with the cereal give her a cup of water. That will fill her up so much. Try it believe me she will be satisfied.

I also had my daughter of the bottle the day she turned one. It was rough for the first couple of days but I got really creative. I will give her the breakfast i wrote above, give her an apple cut up into really small pieces and put it in a baby plate for her so she was able to be independent, for lunch i cooked a sweet potatoe and added some vegetables and mashed everything up together, for snack i gave her more fruits or some baby cookies (with all of this i only gave her water) then for dinner i will give her adult food. I will mash everything together and give her a cup of regular milk. The regular milk was only when she turned one. Everything else above was @ 9-10 months.

You just have to get so creative with them and expose them to so many different things. My daughter will sit at the table and eat a plate of spinach by hand all by herself because I fed her spinach, brocoli, green beans, carrots, etc. when she was a baby.

I hope this information was informative.

Good Luck!

I mixed the fruit with cereal. Rice and then oatmeal. I did give her rice cereal mixed with fruit for a month before switching. As far as the bottle goes.....the day after my daughters birthday she wouldn't take a bottle any more. Out of the blue. She just didn't want it. My feelings lead me to think it was because I put no pressure on the thought of it. Now, she won't get rid of her pacifier. I think that is because I don't like her to have it. I make a deal out of it and she knows I don't want her to have it.

Good luck!

Hey S., my daughter is the same age as yours. She only has two teeth in her mouth but what an eater! She wakes up at 6-6:30 and has her bottle. Then around 7/8 am she is hungry again so I give her broken up pieces of waffles/pancakes, or a banana along with her baby cereal. Sometimes, the pancake/waffle is enough to fill her up. and shes content for the next few hours until its time for another bottle and off to a nap. Isnt this the best age! We are so lucky to have this experience!

Hi S.,
My daughter is nine and a half month old also. I give her a big bowl of cereal and a whole jar of fruit for breakfast about 20 minutes after she wakes up. She eats two jars for lunch and two for dinner. She only has three bottles a day one at each nap and one at bedtime. She is a big girl, she weighs 25 pounds! She's smiley, happy and sleeping 12-13 hours a night. In about a month I plan on stopping the nap bottle and a bottle only at bed. That is what worked for my older daughter. She's 2 now.
Good luck.....

It gives great infant/todler recipes and a meal chart example of a daily menu for your baby. This helped me out tremendously when I began giving my daughter solids.

I always mixed different cereals with a little fruit in the morning. You don't want her to get used to having something so sweet first thing. Especially as she gets older you'll find that if they eat something sweet, it throws their whole day off and all they want is junk. Cereal will fill her up for longer.

oh yes. she's 9 months old. she should be getting cereal in the am, fruit and veggies for lunch, and some stage 3 foods in the PM (with meat and stuff). formula alone at this age is not enough.
also you can start offering her well (i stress well) cooked pasta, mashed bananas etc.
at this age she should be getting around 16 to 24 oz formula, 2 snacks and 3 meals a day
good luck

Cereal is a great place to start. My son loved baby oatmeal mixed with a jar of fruit (and a little formula to thin it). He was still hungry again within a few hours- but that's just because babies have such little tummies that they can only eat so much at a time. If you haven't already introduced cereal, now is the time- it is a perfect addition to her diet. Good luck!

Hi S.,
My daughter Kate is 10 months old. Unlike her older sister, she would not eat cereal or anything else from a spoon - so she may be a little ahead of Aubrey in terms of eating chunkier texture food? Anyway, she is a big piggy - her breakfast favorites are cheese, watermelon, grapes (make sure you slice lengthwise to prevent choking - supposed to take the skin off but I don't), avocado (EXCELLENT source of vitamins and nice a mushy), toast (cut it into long strips, great for them to hang onto. She also just started to eat from a spoon and likes yogurt (buy the full fat, not lowfat). Dannon and Stoneyfield Farms make it.

check with your pediatrician first, but scrambled eggs are also a big hit with her. We didn't do baby food with either of our kids.

Most moms take the child off of the bottle and formula after a year, but remember that it is replaced with milk, which she can drink form a sippy cup and that will help fill her up, too. As she gets more teeth, you will have more options-- dry cereal and even cereal with milk is a good choice after she's a year old

My son is 9 1/2 months. He loves to eat oatmeal (the real stuff and not baby cereal) for breakfast. He is also eatting lunch and dinner. He likes the greber graduate meals, not baby food (of course). But realize each child is different. My first child like babyfood for a lot longer then my son. But she also liked egg yolks for breakfast (in which my son does not).

Hello! You have already received some great advice! Definitely continue to give her the milk - she should be drinking at least 6 oz in the morning. Also - off the bottle doesn't mean she needs to get off the milk. Milk is very important for kids even after 1 yr old. My 2 year old drinks 18Oz a day still with 3 full meals and some snacks.

For breakfast, try giving her some cereal in the morning either mixed with fruit or followed by fruit or yogurt. Yo Baby yogurts are really good for babies at this age because they are made with full fat milk and baby needs that fat for brain development.

Good Luck!

I also have a 9 1/2 mth daughter and what we do for breakfast is give her a 8oz bottle right when she gets up, then about an hour later she gets 4 oz of fruit and 1/2 cup of cereal (mixed or oatmeal) - mixed together or she will get 4 oz of fruit and the "good morning" breakfast in a jar from Beech Nut. Hope this works
