I don't know how much my 8 month old should be eating. 1 jar of baby food a day? or 2? And then should he also have a bottle with food...or in between feedings? I just don't know. Everyone says he's so fat (he's SO CUTE). He weighs 18 pounds, but is extremely short (in 10th percentile for height). Any advice would be so helpful!!

What can I do next?

first, how much did the baby weigh at birth. remember children will eat as long as feed them. at 8mths my children were given baby cereal and jar of food for breakfast.(they were over 20lbs at this time) for luch we ate together.(I gave water afterwards) they were given a jar of half veg and half fruit as a snack. for dinner they ate what we ate or had jar food and cereal. at this feeding I gave them water or half bottle of warm milk. you set the pace on when and how much. as long as the doctor's are not complaing you are doing fine. my 11 1/2yr.old is not 4ft. tall and weighs over eighty lbs. im a mother of 6, each child is different. GOOD LUCK!

I don't know what the norms are, but my pediatrician always said "he'll stop eating when he's full," but that's not true with my son. I kept feeding him and feeding him. He would eat until he threw up. I just watched him and fed him as much as I thought he could handle.

he should be eating 3 meals and one snack. one or two jars per meal and them about a four or six ounce bottle after he is done eating. for a snack, he is probably ready for finger foods like cheerios, raisins or small pieces of cut up fruit. the formula is what is keeping him chubby at this age. it is about time to cut him down to only three bottles per day. one after breakfast, before afternoon nap and one before bed. if he is still getting up at night, you can give a bottle then also. my son was an table food at this age, no baby food, but that was because he had texture issues with the pureed foods. but for sure he should be getting one jar or more, three meals per day. hope this helped.

If people think your baby fat then they would think my lil girl is obese. My lil girl is 7 months old and weighs 21 pounds 11 oz. Anyways back to your question. I give my baby a jar of baby food in the a.m., a jar @ daycare and a jar @ night. I give her a jar @ night so she stays full and won't wake up wanting a bottle. (She still wakes up 2-3 times @ night.) She is on Stage 2 baby food. I still give her formula. I don't give her formula in the a.m. after she eats her baby food. She has a bottle around 8 a.m. Eats a jar of baby food around 11-11:30 @ daycare. Bottle around 2:00 then again 4-4:30. Then when I pick her up I will give her baby food around 6:30-7:00 p.m. She loves her milk and she gets another bottle around 8:30 to get her to sleep. She won't take a pacifier. Yes I know my baby is big but she also is 25 1/2 inches long. She is in the 90%. If my baby is hungry I will feed her. I can not watch her cry when she's hungry so I will feed her. I can careless when people tell me she is chunky or big. If they were hungry they would eat.

He should probably eat 6 oz of food at each meal. If you choose prepared baby food, you can try giving him the stage 3 kind if he has some teeth. Or just give him one and a half jars of stage 2 foods. I bought a food scale and measured out whatever we were eating that the baby could also have. Good luck. Hope this advice was useful.

Feed him first and then give him a bottle. I used to try and give my kids 1-2 jars per meal. Feed him as much as you can and then let him drink. You want hinm to eat more than he drinks. For snacks, give him some cheerios or Gerber fruit puffs or something and a bottle.

By 8 months old my son was eating solids for breakfast lunch and dinner and 4 bottles a day (approx 6 ounces each). I would feed him a bottle first thing in the morning, after his morning nap, after his afternoon nap, and before bedtime (about every 3-4 hours). For breakfast (usually about 1hr after waking up) I would feed him oatmeal mixed with a little fruit (usually apples, pears, or banannas). For lunch and dinner I would usually feed him a veggie...sweet potatoes, winter squash, green beans, carrots, etc... I made all of his food so I'm not sure of the exact amount but it was probably about 4-6 ounces. His pediatrician said that he did not have to have meat in his diet at that time...the meat dinners in the baby jars seemed nasty to us so we didn't feed him any meat until he was able to chew. Also, his pediatrician said that the main source of his nutrients before he is 12 months old should come from formula or breast milk. I hope this helps.
Congratulations on your boys!!!

The Dr Sears baby book and my pediatrician both say that at 8 months (up to a year) the majority of their foor should come from breast milk or formula. My son just had his 9 month well-check and the pediatrician said she recommends 30 oz of formula a day. For him that's 4-5 bottles. I give him a bottle after he wakes in the morning and then about every 3-4 hours. He eats meals with me which is usually half of a Gerber stage 2 with cereal or whole with no cereal, supplemented with pieces of fruit, toast, veggies, rice, pasta, cheerios, etc. I've now started putting a third of his formula into a sippy cup and offering it to him towards the end his meal. I'm hoping this will encourage him to eat more solids as well as get used to a sippy cup.

As you can tell from everybody's responses, ther's no right way. Take your cues from him. But based on my doctor I would still put more emphasis on his formula at this age and let him get used to different solids and finger foods. And don't worry about his weight. Once he starts crawling he'll probably loose some of that cute baby fat! I hope this helps.

I would just try to feed him 3 meals a day with bottles in between and maybe a few snacks like cheerios or gerber puffs. Let him eat as much as he wants. Maybe cereal for breakfast, a jar ob veggies or fruits for lunch and a jar of veggies or fruits for supper. Also, yogurt is a good snack or even meal at this age. Try to relax though, he will eat plenty as long as it is offered. I don't think there is really a set rule of thumb at his age. Also, if you are eating something like green beans, for instance, mash some up and offer him some. And don't worry about him being fat. My daughter was 15.13 at her 4 month wellness exam and she hasn't been for the 6 month exam yet but I'm sure she is well over 16 pounds. 75th percentile but 18 pounds at 8 months is not heavy. Besides, babies are suppossed to be chunky because they still have their baby fat. Good luck with all!
