Problems with B.C. Pills??

I have started using B.C. Pills again about 5 months ago. I have been through 3 different types and none are working for me. The 3rd pill i tried worked fine the first month, but the second and third i have had almost constant bleeding. I have also had very noticeable mood swings with all three pills. I have contacted my doctor about the issue on several occasions, and all they say is to stick it out. I have also had an abnormal pap, that has still yet to be checked again until next month. I have never had a problem with the pill before my son was born. What's up? And has anyone else ever had this problem. The doctor insists the moodiness is NOT from the pill...

What can I do next?

I was on the nuva ring after my daughter was born - i found it helps w/ the mood swings b/c the hormone release is more even through out the cycle (same thing has been said for the patch) - vs. an actual pill - has to go through your digestive system, then once it is digested - the hormone levels spike and then wear down as time goes on and it at it's lowest 24 hours later (when you'd be ready to take your next one). try taking your pill before you go to bed - so hopfully the hormone spike will mostly be while you're sleeping - and be a bit more level through the day.

I was on B.C. pills for almost 10 years before I had my first child. After my first child, something happened to my body that made me unable to take them any longer. I went through at least 5 different pills and the patch, and I had awful side effects with all of them.

I also had the same problems with the pill. I found myself being depressed and having mood swings on the pill. I had been on the pill for 16 years before children and was surprised by the crazy mood swings afterwards. My husband and I now use condoms and I don't have those crazy mood swings anymore. I wish I had a better experience to share...

Hi L.,

I had many issues with the pill. I was pretty crazy with mood swings, crying, overall not myself. I tried many differnt pills the last one that I tried was a low dose I belive it was ortho tri cycline low. I got pregant while taking the low dose and sufferd a misscarrige. I stopped taking birth control after that all together. There was quite a change in my mood and behavior. Then 2 years later I had my son. (suprise) After I had my son I have been using the nuva ring and I think its the best option for me. It has been a great form birth control. Very easy and effective. I have not had any negitive effects. I highly recommend nuva ring. I hope that helps. Good Luck !

I have never been able to take the pill. It has always thrown me off balance. My mood & my period. Right now I am taking the shot (cause at this time it is much easier for me to get a shot every 3 months versus rembering to take something daily). I also used the patch before which seemed to work for me but I know a couple people that had several problems with it.

It might be trial and error til you find what works for you and your body. And your doctor (in my opinion) is wrong about the pill effecting your mood - it so can!!!! Maybe you can do your own research and go from there....

You should try NFP! No side effects from chemicals! Highly effective, safe and healthy for the woman (no risk of blood clots, stroke, heart attacks, some types of cancer), many couples even say it strengthens their marriages!

I have the same problem with moodiness and birth control pills. I have tried many, many different kinds over the years and i have found that my body simply cannot take the hormones. I do, however, have a doctor that does say that in some people the hormones can cause mood swings So... we use other forms of birth control.

I have also tried Yaz and the nuvaring and have the same problems. My body simply cannot take any kind of hormones -- which would include the newer IUD's.

You need a new doctor! The BC pills have hormones so obviously they can alter your moods. I can not take any hormonal BC due to severe depression and mood swings they give me. You should research other forms of birth control and new docs! Good luck!

Hi L.,
I have never been on the pill, but have heard from numerous people that they've experienced all sorts of side effects, including moodiness from it. The other thing the doctor won't tell you is that the pill sometimes allows conception to occur and then has to kick into plan B, which is to make the uterine environment hostile to the new life, so it won't implant. Check out the insert papers that come with it, and I'm sure you'll find out all sorts of wonderful side effects, etc, that the doctors and drug companies don't really want you to know.

I too had a problem with the pill after I had my daughter. I would bleed for weeks at a time. I got the same advice from my doctor (to stick it out)and it worked. After a few months, everything evened out and I'm just fine now. Your body is reacting as if you've never been on the pill before not as if you're picking up where you left off.
As far as the mood swings go, I had problems when I was on the patch where I would just cry for no reason. I've never had a problem with the pill though. Are you on the same one as before you were pregnant? It might just be due to all the things that come along with a new baby. Lots of women experience mood swings just because they're moms....at least I do. You have a lot more going on in your mind now, it's only natural being a mother. I think that's another thing that will just even itself out.
Good luck and try not to worry too much. As long as your doctor is working on trying to figure out why you had an abnormal pap, try to just relax.
Good luck!

Have you tried Yaz its a different hormone combo than most pills Also the pill can give you a false positive on a pap.

I am on trivora which is a low dose B.C. pill. I have never had any issues/problems with it. My periods come the week it shows I am suppose to have it, less painful periods, no moodiness or depression. I am not sure what type of B.C. you are on now but I would definitely check out your options and not "wait it out" :) Good luck

Hi L.,

Have you tried Yaz? I was put on different pills for years and finally tried Yaz and I reacted completely different to it! Not sure why but it may be worth a try if you want to stick to the pill.

Hi L.,

I've been told by my OB that your ability to take BC may change after birth. It happened to me, and I am now completely off all BC, after trying 4-5 different kinds, going through horrible mood swings, random bleeding, etc. Listen to your body. If the pill isn't working post birth, maybe research other options. I question your doctor saying the moodiness could NOT be from the pill. Every OB I've had has admitted that moods are effected by the pill.

Good luck!
