Best Birth Control

Hi Moms,

My annual appointment is coming up 1 yr after my daughter was born. I am done nursing her and now when I go back to my dr, I want to get on some form of birth control but not sure which/what type. I do now I will not go on the pill. For me it causes me to gain weight, which I struggle with anyway. (I know people, doctors mainly, say it doesn't cause weight gain but the two times I've been on it I have gained weight, more than 5 lbs.)

Anyway, I'm not ready to get my tubes tied but I really don't want another baby anytime soon! So other than the pill, what do you use that you are happy with that has little to no side effects? And has little chance of getting pregnant!

Thanks,
M. D.

IUD or the nuvaring. I have the ring and love it. I have several other friends with the IUD -- great non-hormone birth control.

I had zero sex drive with the depo shot and the pill is just too hard to remember.

I think the Mirena, looking at the research is the best, and good news for you breastfeeding moms it has such a low dose because it is continuous, progestin only that you can even breastfeed with it and have many fewer side effects than the estrogen pills(which you can't breastfeed with).

The Mirena IUD is awesome! No pills, no shots, no condoms! It's good for 5 years. I love mine!

I love my copper IUD... good for ten years, but I plan on taking it out well before that. Anyway, I love that it doesn't pump me full of hormones. It's great. I don't ever have to worry about it. Plus, it didn't hurt getting it put in. LOVE IT.

Merina (sp?) IUD works for me. The installation was a little uncomfortable, but I've had no side effects (and no periods). What I like about it, is that other than having it checked at my annual, I won't have to think about it for 5 years.

I had some really ugly side effects with the Mirena. I have since talked to several other people who had similar reactions. Be very careful - there is actually a class action lawsuit going on right now because of the severity of the side effects. It can cause weight gain, acne, stroke, SEVERE depression, migraines, etc. I would seriously look at some other form of birth control.

I think I have tried every form of birth control out there except the IUD. So, I really have no opinion on that one. I Hated the depo prevera shot, terrible side effects and it caused me to have a period non-stop for 5 months! YIKES! I tried the nuva ring, which some people love, but for me it caused me to gain weight and get terrible acne. The pill I fianally landed on and has been working for me is Ovcon 35. It is great, no weight gain, no acne, no side effects...no bleeding for 5 months straight! Unless you go w/ the IUD, you will just have to try a few until you get the one that works for you. It sucks, but its worth it when you find the right one. Ask your doc for samples for 2 or 3 months worth of whatever you are going to try to see how your body responds to it before you shell out all the money for a prescription!

Good luck!

I have the same issue! I did try the Nuvaring... and the first month was great... then after that I started having all the old symptoms (cravings, mood swings, weight gain, no sex drive). Also EVERYONE I know that has done the shot has gained over 15 pounds... seriously.

My doctor told me that the Mirena was likely to cause the same problems... and because it's a long term thing... it really wasn't worth the risk. The copper IUD was a consideration for me, though.

I did use a diaphragm with spermicides while nursing my son.. and I loved it. It's not quite as effective as the pill, though. I guess just ask around and try different things until you find something that works for you!

Good Luck!

I love, love, love the Depo Provera shot. I have been on it for 3 years, took 2 years off to have a baby and now I am back on it. I love it because I have no period AT ALL, YEAH!! Some people say this is not healthy, but my OBGYN says it's fine and I have never had any issues. I only have to get one shot every 3 months, it is less expensive than taking the pill, and I do not have to worry about forgetting to take the pill. I was always scared that I would get pregnant if I forgot a pill, with the shot I never have to worry about it. Good luck, I am sure you will find something that works for you.

The ONLY birth control that I will ever use again is the Nuva Ring. Very easy and you NEVER have to remember to take it only when it's time to switch it out. I myself had problems with other BC , weight gain, mood swings, etc. I never once had any problems with the Nuva Ring. That's my opinion:)
Good Luck

I have found the best birth control to be two sets of twins under four. Pretty much we have no time, energy, or desire to do anything that might create a third set...(smile).

I had problems with the ring, and Patch, so this is my last chance:(

I love my IUD, just the old fashioned type- no hormones. I wanted to get away from anything that would mess w/ my hormones after some severe depression between kiddos, and have been pleased with my choice.

Good luck to you.
