So, I am really worried about our twins eating habits. I am trying to transition off of the boob. And I am super stressed about it. A friend suggested that I try putting probiotics into their cups with their milk. She says this helps with digestion and absorption of nutrients. However, I do not know very much about them. Does anyone encourage or discourage this?
Thanks

I started my kids on probiotics about a year ago. It helped my son with his diaper rash issue and my daughter with her constipation issue. At one time, I ran out for a week and noticed a huge difference! They have been drinking kefir and they love it! I recently got my own grains and have been making my own (much cheaper). Now I have enough for myself, too. The kids like it because I can make different flavors for them.

I have given them to my daughter in the form of Danactive when she is on antibiotics to help prevent diarrhea upon suggestion of my pediatrician. This was very recently and I am now learning about them. Look up Culturelle and read about it :)

Do not stress the stopping of nursing! Make mealtimes fun, cut out the nursing slowly, that way it is not as upsetting to them or you. The night times are the last nursing sessions to go, so if you still do it at night, keep it up until all the ones during the day are gone, and then once you decide no more at night thats it, its hard at first but you can do it!

I answer with an overwhelming, YES! Matter of fact I recommend everyone take probiotics. It not only helps with digestion and absorption of nutrients but it also supports a healthy immune system. Most people are unaware that about 80% of your immune system lies in your intestinal tract. My husband and I , along with our two boys, have been taking probiotics for years and we rarely get ill. I can't even remember when the last time I got sick was. We take probiotics in capsule form that can be used by the entire family. For the kids that can't swallow a small capsule you just open the capsule and sprinkle it over their food or put it into their bottle of formula.

As a former RN, I love providing information about how to improve the health of all family members.

I know this question is from months ago, but I think I just stumbled upon wise advice that all of us moms should know. It is a FREE replay of an interview with Donna Gates, who wrote "The Body Ecology Diet."

I am a HUGE proponent of probiotics, but disagree with some points already given. First, I'm a big advocate of raw milk, which in itself is a probiotic, full of life, enzymes, beneficial bacteria and other goodies, if it comes from an unadulterated source.

Next, unless you have a health crisis, probiotic supplements aren't necessary. You can include real food in your diet instead of manufactured supplements: homemade yogurt and kefir, kefir sodas, kombucha sodas and fruit and vegetable ferments. This includes sauerkraut, salsas, garlic, pickles and kimchi. These are so easy to make and SO GOOD FOR YOU. For adults who didn't grow up with these, they can take some adjustment to flavors. But if your kids eat them they will quickly grow to love them. I can't keep my kids off them.

Also, if you're stressed about weaning, why push it? Make it gradual. YOU eat probiotics and they'll start to adjust to the taste and their systems will reap the benefits as they adjust to more solid food.

Probiotics are good - research them and learn about them since you are interested in giving them to your kids. Human bodies are not designed to ingest dairy products - especially cow's milk - for our entire lives so assisting the body in digesting and eliminating them is essential.

Yes!! Excellent idea...We give our children, ages 21 months and 3 yrs, Kefir Probiotic. There are so many different yummy flavors that our whole family enjoys. We will usually mix it with milk or throw it in the blender to make a delicious smoothy. Our personal favorite is the the blueberry flavor-we throw frozen blueberries, milk, vanilla yogurt, blueberry Kefir, and vanilla ice cream together for an awesome smoothy. Since our 3 year old has a VERY limited diet (not kidding), I am thankful that he will drink the strawberry/banana flavor mixed with milk sometimes. Also, my children rarely get sick and I think a lot has to do with the amount of yogurt they eat and probiotics they drink.

Good Luck!

probiotics are VERY good for adults and kids. I give my 5 year old and 2 year old chewable ones every day and I double it if they ever have to take antibiotics. So far this flu season my kids have not gotten the flu even once (throwing up or diareah). You can get probiotics in a powder form so that you can mix it with food or milk or smoothie or something. I even take it sometimes and it really helps. So, yes, probiotics are very good for you and I totally recomend it!!

Probiotics are definately good. I have given them to my kids ages 11 and 8 for years. They help build the good bacteria in the intestines, which in effect supports the immune system. Go to your local health store for the powdered one, and just ask for help. They can usually help.

encourage them.....they are amazing for all. We are all on them as well as my 7 month old.
They have powdered forms out there for children so it is easy to give to them.
You should be taking them as well! Enjoy!

do educate yourself on them as well, do not give yogurt thinking it is the same thing...it is not. Yogurt has too much sugar. YOu need pure probiotics. The brand we use has a yellow plastic top on it- found in refrig. section.
As yogart is good, it is necessary to have both. And if taking with antibiotics, please make sure to not take them together- spread at least 2 hours apart- however I discourage the use of antibiotics unless absolutely necessary:)
