I am looking to start potty training my son who is 2 1/2 years old. My husband is very against a chair because he doesn't want to have to clean it.
We bought one that attaches to the toilet seat, I believe it was a safety first, it doesn't have much of a "splash guard" and I he doesn't seem to comfterable on it. The other one we bought is a travel one that has handles and no splash guard.
I don't need one with all the bells and whistles on it. Something simple will do.
My question is..what seat/chair did you use?
I think a little potty chair to start with will be fine, since I am home all day with him,I am just worried about the splash issue.

My son also only wanted to use the "big potty" and did a lot better learning standing up from the get go. No matter what little potty we used, it was disgusting! I found a seat that had a built in rail and steps to hook on the regular toilet (I think it was from Right Start) in the kids bathroom and then seats for bowel movements and a step stool to stand on in the other bathrooms.
We have two seats that sit on the potty. One has a splash guard and handles and the other doesn't. My son also, could not get the hang of peeing sitting down, so we taught him how to do it standing up and that seemed to work. He would not have bowel movements on the big potty at first. I ended up also getting a small potty that sits on the floor. I can't remember the brand but it was one that you could use the bottom for a step stool and it had a cup that you emptied. It wasn't very hard to clean. I would just keep disinfecting wipes in the bathroom and only use the sink periodically or when it was really messy. It wasn't long after being trained on the little potty that he was starting to use the rings on the big potty. That is what he uses now.
We used what you already bought, one that attached to the toilet seat. Make sure you husband is involved with the process because that really help in our house. He always wanted to be like dad.

I too have a 21/2 year old son and a 5 year old son. I am doing the same routine that I did with my 5 year old. I have a potty chair that I just sit in the family room and then I have a seat that goes on the "big people" toilet that is just a little cushioned seat that has seasame street characters on it. It does not have handles or anything.I have seen it a Target, Meijers, ToysRus etc. It is about 9/10 dollars. With either seat, I tell him to "push his peepee down" or I do it for him, otherwise he would pee all over. I have tried the potty seat with the pee guard on it and it makes me nervous because I think when he goes to sit he is going to hurt himself on it. I have also put a step stool next to the toilet so he can get up and down by himself. However....at this point my son is not really interested yet in using either one. I will take his diaper off and sit him on his potty seat while he watches TV just to get him used to the idea. MY pedicatrician told me that with boys....not to even expect it to happen until 3 years old. Good Luck!
We just used the seat for bowel movements. From the start we taught our son to pee standing up, when he was about the same age. It just never occured to me to teach him sitting down!
We didn't have any problems.
I used the same type of seat that Mary uses--the one that just sits on the top of the "big people" toilet. However, I only ended up using it for bowel movements. He could never get the concept of peeing sitting down. That's where Daddy came in to help him. So for urine, we have just used a stool for him to reach.
The Baby Bjorn is WONDERFUL. The splash guard is "built in" so no worries of it falling over or falling off. And The potty part just lifts right out w/out having to lift the seat part or anything. Very easy to clean.
After he got the hang of going, we went and bought the Peter Potty...it's a tiny urinal that taught him to stand up when going. I wish I still used it as I feel like I'm cleaning up around my toilet every day :)
