I am ready to start potty training my son. I have heard that some potty chairs work better for boys than girls. Does anyone have a favorite potty chair that worked well for their little boy that they can recommend? Thanks!

I agree with Carrie! I have 2 boys and when I potty trained my first we used a potty chair! When they are done using the potty chair you then have to transition them to the toilet. It is just easier to train them on the toilet!

If your son is tall enough - I would highly suggest teaching him to stand up for #1...just like daddy! This was much "cooler" for my son and it was easier to train. We used one of the seats that fits on the adult toilet for #2 and after a short time (when he was strong enough) we took that away and he just hold himself up. The trick is teaching them to get #1 in the toilet when they are sitting for #2 but its possible!

Good luck.

PS - I noticed you son is only 22 months...we tried training my son that young but absolutely crashed and burned. After talking with other moms I realized it was too young for a boy. We tried again at about 3 years and nope, still too young. 3rd time was a charm and at 3 1/2 years old he was ready and trained pretty quick.

we tried the musical fisher price potty chair first, but my son thought it was so uncomfortable he wouldn't sit on it for long. then we got a baby bjorn potty chair (about $25) i think and he liked it much better. it was much simpler to remove the try and clean too! good luck with potty training, have lots of patience!

Hi J.,

Although I am not a fan of potty chairs (I prefer the seat that goes on the toilet), my mother got one for my son to use at her house. She got the one that makes music whenever anything hits the basin of the bowl. It has two types of music. My son just loves to go at her house because after he has gone, we all have "heard" that he did. I can't remember the brand, but if you shop on line, I am sure you'll find the one with music. Also, the chair can be used as a step stool when the lid is down. Nice for washing hands afterward. Good luck.

at first we bought a potty chair at target with a "splash shield", thinking that would be best for boys, but it turned out to be a nuisance. the splash shield was just in the way, so we took it off. the seat could be taken off the base and put on the toilet, but the parts that kept it on the toilet seat kept falling off into the toilet. and it was uncomfortable to sit on. plus, they grew too big for the potty chair quickly. what worked best for us was getting a padded seat that can be put on top of the toilet seat (less than $7 from walmart in the baby section) and a step stool. the padded seat helped our youngest son feel safer and he could take as long as he needed without getting uncomfortable. it wasn't hard at all to get the boys to "hold it down" so they could pee sitting down. and the step stool helps them reach the toilet for standing up until they're tall enough. eventually neither of them cared to use the padded seat or the step stool because they were proud of themselves being able to get on and off the toilet by themselves. good luck and i hope the whole process goes well for you!

We didn't buy a potty chair. Just let him use the big potty - buy a stool! Here is one of the big problems with potty chairs - you don't find them everywhere.

Some of my friends used potty chairs and when they'd be out (at a store, restaurant, even friends and relatives homes) there wasn't a potty chair and their child was afraid to go, wouldn't, or would have an accident.

I never used a special chair or anything and my kids have no fear of any toilets - even the "loud" ones in stores and such.

Good luck!

I agree with the other moms, get the kind that fits directly on the adult toilet and put a step stool in front so they can climb up. You will want two seats, a fold-up kind that fits in your diaper bag and a sturdy one for at home. All of my boys liked the kind with handles on the side-I forget the brand name-but they really liked having the handles to hang onto while they were sitting up there, it made them not so scared that they were going to fall in the big toilet : ).

I'm coming in a little late on the topic, but I use the potty chairs first, I buy three and find one that fits my kids the best, and return the other two. I always start with the chair cause it gives a litle more control to the kids, they can do it by themselves and don't have to wait for mom to take them. I have also never had a problem getting them to go in the public bathrooms, yes the first time is tricky, but no issues. And no issues transitioning to the big toilet for good. My youngest has the fisher price singing one, I don't like them but he does and it fit best. We will be training next month. Good luck.

P.S I have 7, 4 boys and 3 girls potty training isn't new to me.

I gave up as all the ones that I bought for my (very small son)son were too SMALL! He peed right over the little shield or scraped himself on it. I went to the potty seat!
good luck.

I just potty trained my son, and if you can avoid potty chairs all together and just use the toilet it is so much better. I use the baby bjorn toilet seat and it has a much higher front part so when they pee sitting down it doesn't shoot straight out. I also taught my son to stand on a stool and pee standing up. If your son is only 2, try the baby Boon potty chair. He can practice sitting on something his own size and then it makes a great stool for your sink. It also has a high "pee catcher" for boys, but it is harder for them to sit on it without you lifting them over the high part. It is much easier to clean than other potty chairs you have to lift up the seat to get to the bowl. The Boon just has a drawer that slides out the front. Good Luck!!

My boys use the Baby Bjorn toilet seat trainer. My boys never took to the potty chair. They feel more secure on the Bjorn toilet seat. As noted by another mom, it does have a higher pee guard(it's great if you have a boy!).

Another feature that I love is that the seat is adaptable to any size toilet. We put it to the test last year when we flew to New Jersey last year. My oldest hates sitting on public toilet seats in fear of falling in. It was a bit cumbersome to pack along through the airport, but so worth it to me. The seat passed the test with flying colors.

Good luck on your potty adventure!

Warm regards,
L.

hi! i have successfully potty trained two boys now 5 and 3. with them we used the potty chair that comes with the book "Once Upon a Potty" by Alana Frankel. they have the boy version with "joshua" and the girl version with "prudence." the book is wonderful and the newer ones come with a doll, too with a great cd full of potty songs that boys really seem to love. avoid rewards for going potty, rather reward them for staying clean and dry! huge distinction in their mind, and will encourage them to hold their potty til they sit on the potty! this potty is also the best we ever tried...i too tried the versions with the songs (again, rewarding only the potty time) and the splash guards that only create a HUGE mess to clean up!

now that they have transitioned from the chair to the seat, we found that the 3 year old has too small a bum and tends to sit way down into the toilet. we got a convertible toilet seat from onestepahead.com that has a smaller child seat that stores in the toilet lid and pulls down for a child's use and then goes back up for adults! it is awesome! i even managed to install it myself! one word of caution...don't purchase the cheaper plastic version...it is not very durable! i wish you the best of luck!!
