Potty Training-- the Next Step?

Hi! My 2 1/2 year old son has been doing so well with potty training-- at least as far as going pee. When it comes to #2, though, he seems scared to try. We started potty training a little over a week ago, and I have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly he took to it! I wonder what are some good ideas for how to help him understand that it's okay to go #2 on the potty. He has been holding it and waiting until he's in a diaper for nap or bedtime. I'd like to help him in a way that won't cause him more fear, but I am just not sure what to do next to encourage him. I know it is normal for this to take a while, but I'd appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Have you tried his favorite animal "pooping" on the potty? I had my son's little bear sit on the potty and then I dropped 3-4 raisins in there when he wasn't looking and we talked about how even his bear went poop on the potty. We also did a little dance/had a party for the bear.

Completely normal. #2 does take longer and is scary to them. Can't offer suggestions somethings you happen naturally. Just praise, which I know you will and just be thrilled that you're already mastering the 1st step at 2 1/2 for a boy that's great now sit back pat yourself on the back and know it'll happen.

This is very common. We used the book - Everybody Poops - it is hilarious and our son got it completely. We put him on the potty every 45 minutes until he went. Don't diaper him for a nap - if he has accidents it will only be for a while. Invest in some mattress covers that will prevent the accidents from getting on the mattress.

With my oldest it took 6 months longer for that. What I did was when he pooped into his diaper we walked it to the potty and plopped the poop into the toilet waved and said bye bye poop. Kids tend to have a separation issue with it, so I showed him that is where it goes even when we do not sit ont he pot. Then after a little bit of time I bought a toy that he did not have but liked(thomas the train trains) and put it up in the bathroom where he can see it and told him if he poops on the potty he would get it. It worked. He had a few ooops but the way I fixed that was taking away the last prize after he oopsed 2 x's in a row, if he kept oopsing I would take them all away. He would get them all back after he went on the potty again. Mind you this punishment thing was only after I knew he got the hang of it and was playing with me (testing to see what would happen if he started pooping in his pants.).
