Possible Delays

Hello! My daughter will be 11 months old on the 29th of June. She seems to have some large motor skill delays that I am a bit worried about. She can sit independantly but only does the "army crawl". She rarely will get up on her hands and knees for a short moment before falling back down again. The books say that she should be at least able to get into a sitting position on her own and she doesn't do that. She doesn't pull herself up to standing and has no interest in standing even when I try to help her. :( I am beginning to get pretty concerned about this! I live in Goodhue County (MN) Does anyone know where I can take her to have her evaluated or where I can call to set something up? Has anyone had a similar situation? Any advice is (always :) appreciated. Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the replies! I always feel better hearing from other wise mamas :). I realized that I mistakenly put that my daughter will be 11 mos. old on JUNE 29th, when I meant to put MAY 29th. She will actually be a year old on June 29th. I called today to set up a time to have her evaluated just to be on the safe side. Thanks again!

You can ask the pediatrician but it all sounds normal to me. Neither of my kids ever crawled prior to walking. 11 months is still really early to be walking. Try not to get caught up in comparing your kid to others and remember that milestones are typically offered as a 'range' so just because she didn't hit a milestone at the beginning of the 'range' doesn't mean there is an issue.

It's in the normal range to be 17 months old before walking. Some kids are just busy learning other things instead of working on standing/walking. The standing thing sounds totally normal to me that she isn't doing that yet. Many babies (maybe even most babies) ARE standing at this age, but it is very normal for some babies to be much older than 11 months. It doesn't mean there is any mental delay or anything. If you really want to get her evaluated, you can check and see if your local school system has an Early Intervention type of program. My daughter had some issues (mod/severe hearing impairment and speech delays) and as a baby, it was the school district that evaluated her and sent a lady over for therapy.

Check with your local school district. Here they do free assessments that young. My oldest was delayed with sitting and rolling and I had her evaluated around 8 months. Good luck!

The only part that sounded delayed is not being able to get into a sitting position on her own. Trust your instincts because a little PT now goes a long way.

Talk to your pediatrician. He or she can do a quick eval and point you in the right direction IF there is need for further action.

I agree with M R with lerning NOT to compare kids. Dates given for milestones are guidelines and/or averages so many, many kids fall to both sides of those curves.

BUT "mommy instinct" is a powerful tool and if you "feel" there's something going on, best to find out earlier rather than later.

Start with your pedi. A friend's son was a bit late to sit/crawl/stand and the pedi noticed it at the 12-month check up. His hip muscles were a bit under-developed so he had PT a few times a week through early intervention (she worked FT so they went to his daycare and did it there) for several months and he caught up a few months later and has been totally fine for years.

I would see if you can get her into the pedi soon rather than waiting another 2 months for her 12-month check-up, just for your own peace of mind. If there is some reason to be concerned, the pedi should be able to tell right away and refer your to EI for services.

She sounds very similar to my now 2 year old daughter. She didn't crawl until her first birthday and took her first steps at 18 months. We had her evaluated by Early Intervention and she qualified for physical therapy services. She continues to have a gross motor delay(8 months delayed), but I am told she will 'catch up' by the time she starts school. EI has really helped so much. We did learn that our daughter has hypotonia(low muscle tone) mainly in her legs. That is the reason for her delays. We are working with her therapist to build muscle strength. She is a normal little girl in every way, but just a little behind. She's walking, running, climbing etc.

Check with your ped. and ask to have her evaluated by EI. The evaluation is free. They will come to your home and play with your child while evaluating her in all areas of development. I was told right away whether or not she qualified. Although it wasn't what I wanted to hear, I'm so glad we pursued it. I really don't think she'd be doing as well as she is without EI.

Good Luck,

S.

Your daughter actually sounds normal to me. I wouldn't be concerned about her not walking or not showing interest in walking until she's closer to 18 months old. The reason is because she's sitting unassisted and because she's mobile. She's able to get around by crawling army crawl and she CAN get up on her hands and knees.

You have to toss those stupid books. The milestones are just loose guidelines, not solid Your Child Must Do This By This Time Rules Or Else. Give her time. From your description it sounds like she's rocking on her hands and knees, testing out the "pre-crawling" on her knees but some children skip that stage entirely.

If you're honestly concerned, talk to your pediatrician at her next appointment. The pedi will do a few simple tests with her. But what you're really looking for are her fine motor skills and if she can understand what you're saying and if she can follow simple directions. Is she talking at all? Trying to color? Self feeding? Clapping? Pointing? Waving hello and goodbye and doing other signs?

Contact your school district. We had my son evaluated for his speech and he qualified for in-home weekly visits. I would imagine they would be able to evaluate your daughter for motor skills.

hmmm i think my oldest learned to roll over at 4 months sat up unassisted around 6 months old... learned to crawl shortly after that around 7 months... she crawled funny but i think it was because of the hard floors we had at that time... and from there she immediately started pulling herself on furniture and walking around while holding on to walls and furniture (BEFORE 8 months) she did this for a while with no change and didn't start walking (or should i say outright running) until about 14 months. i have known several children to walk as early as 8 months... basically she went from army crawl to walking around furniture in two months or less it was a drastic change... very memorable for me.. but it took her forever to let go of those walls because i think she just never thought to do it... i remember she was holding on the the wall across the room and she looked at me and went to bend down to crawl and just had this look on her face like she would much rather she could fly to that coffee table that was in front of me and i said " honey why don't you just let go of the wall and walk over here" and she just looked at me like " oh i never thought of that" and she did it..... my mother tells me that i didn't walk until i was 16 months and neither did my brother... so those guidelines are not law. not in my experience at least. for what it's worth. i would talk to her pediatrician, if this is something that is bothering you,( i did that when i was concerned about her funny crawl she had some x rays taken but it just turned out that she preferred to crawl that way and nothing was wrong with her ) but i wouldn't worry about it, kids do things at their own pace. and i would be happy because that means she's not getting into nearly as much as she would be if she was walking at that age, and some kids do!

I too don't think she is that delayed. BUT I'm not a medical professional. Talk to your ped and then go from there.

She sounds just fine. She is not yet 10 months old. Nothing wrong with doing the "army crawl". Reading books can drive you crazy with worry over what they say your child should be doing. There is a wide age range for each stage of development. My daughters were on the later side of the normal range for walking. One at 13 months, the other at 17 months. Neither had or has any physical/developmental delays. Anything up to 18 months is within the normal range for walking. If you still feel concerned talk with your pediatrician.
