How old was your baby when they started crawling? Im worried abuot my neice. She is 8 months old and is not crawling, cruising or pulling up. She will stand on her legs if youre holding her BUT she will not stand (like holding on to the sofa) on the floor. Other than that she is the typical 8 month old baby.

What can I do next?

Babies crawl much later noes because they do not sleep on their tummies. Long ago, when they slept on their tummies, they learned from day one to scoot around, she will crawl when she is ready.

My son started crawling at 9 months and he seriously rarely did it. He preferred to roll. He started walking at 13 months. Perfectly normal. Remember - once they crawl, you cannot just put them somewhere and count on them staying put.

Lots skip crawling and go straight to walking at a year.
Lots start crawling at 9-12mo
Some start crawling after 12mo
Very few can stand before 9mo WITHOUT causing bone growth deformaties (bowed legs, hip dysplaysia, knee & ankle deformaties, etc.) due to soft bones.
Very few have some kind of neurophysiological thing going on.

If she's in every other way a normal 8mo... Then I suspect she's a normal & healthy 8mo who is not working on gross motor development, because she's working on cognitive, emotional, or fine motor development).

To know... In many societies babies don't even SIT unaided until after 12mo. In Bali, infants feet are not allowed to touch the ground until their 1st bday. Many -if not most- NA tribes kep infants swaddled until after 1yo. Both historically (from the archaeological record) & modernly (from med records) this is an extremely HEALTHY mode of child rearing... Leading to physically & emotionally/cognitively NORMAL toddlers and adults.... With one exception: In modern cultures that restrict the physical movements of children until a later age, they tend to be quite advanced cognitively & emotionally & in fine motor (talking often at a "2yo" level at 1 year, finger manipulation... Self feeding, drawing, pincer, etc..... And skipping terrible 2's, etc.).

Meanwhile in our culture... Physical movement is prized with 'normal' being walking at 12mo, talking fluidly & terrible 2s @2, etc.

Neither is "better". After a couple years, children are indistinguishable from each other... Because the brain DOES everything, just in reverse order from the other culture.

"Faster" & "Early" is NOT better. Not as far as the brain is concerned. It really isn't a race. Its MASTERY that is important.

Even within each culture... ALL BABIES DEVELOP DIFFERENTLY. Meaning fast grower tend to delay gross motor until growth slows, and 1000 other variations.

The milestone ranges (for normal) is HUGE. Months long = normal.

Now... I have a lot of friends from Children's Hospital whose children DO have neuro or physiological issues that are very serious and need massive intervention (not an hour of OT, we're talking trachs, and NG tubes, and cough assists, and hours of physical therapy daily.

Determining the difference between hypotonia & not can be hard for anyone who isn't a pediatric neurologist, for example.

When in DOUBT... Get an eval. Even if its totally in the normal range. But oy 1:1,000,000 will actually need major intervention. Most are just focusing on another area of healthy, normal, neurophysiological development.

My little guy was a full nine months before he started crawling. It was a double-blessing, actually, as we were flying cross-country to visit the in-laws in their "not so childproofed" house. It would have been a disaster if he'd come to crawling before that trip-- the fact that he started crawling at their house was a bonus for them, too. Still, he was quite tentative for a while.

Enjoy this time of immobility! As one friend says "You spend all that time waiting for them to walk and talk.... and then later you just want them to sit down and be quiet." :)

Your baby isn't ready to stand up. Don't try to do that with her. You could bow her legs.

If you are worried about her, talk to the ped and ask for him or her to do an exam. Just don't try to force her.

My son crawled at about 9 or 10 months.
He was great at rolling over - back to front and front to back.
He'd see a toy he wanted that was out of his reach while on his stomach, then he'd roll to his back and push with his legs and scoot up a bit then roll back over to see if he could reach it yet.
He was a determined little guy but he got what he wanted!
He had his own crawling style at first.
He'd leap forward with both hands then drag both knees forward.
Daycare said he had incredible abdominal muscles.
But he soon settled into one knee forward at a time eventually.
Then he climbed everything!
He was great at pulling himself up and cruising while holding on.
But he didn't walk unassisted till he was 14 months.
At 8 months I don't think there's reason to worry about your niece yet.
There's a wide range of when kids crawl and walk.

I remember my oldest trying to roll over when he was about 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure he had it figured out by 7 months. I also have distinct memories of him at 8 months. He could sit, but not crawl, and if he fell down (sudden, loud noises would startle him and cause him to fall) he needed me to sit him back up. Can't remember when he started crawling, bu the was about 14 months when he started walking.

My youngest was rolling over at 4 or 5 months (insane!) and crawling at 7 months. He was walking before is first birthday.

Kids are different, and right now there is no reason to worry.

I noticed a couple of moms seem to indicate that if you help her stand (by holding her hands) you could cause her legs to bow. MYTH, MYTH, MYTH!!! All kids are naturally bow legged for part of their development.

When our kids were newborns we would pull them up to stand on our legs. It was so cute! As long as she can bare weight on her legs, it's absolute fine for her to stand while you hold her hands. If it were harmful to her body, she would be in pain and would not want you to do this. Follow her cues, and she'll be fine!

She's doing just fine. Right now, she's simply not interested. Once day she will be. She'll want to be more independent (that was my youngest) or want to be able to play with a toy that's out of reach or something else will grab her attention. Then she'll be off to the races.

My niece never crawled. She eventually scooted on her bottom though. Like an inchworm, only she was seated... she'd stick her feet/heels out way in front, grip the floor with her heels and then pull in and scoot forward. She did that forever, too. Then walked.

My son didn't crawl until around 9 months or so. But he walked at 10 1/2 months.
I don't even know how old my daughter was... but she walked at 11 months. All kids are different. And your daughter isn't delayed just because she is 8 months and not crawling. I'd almost bet that her verbal skills are proliferating though.

my daughter started crawling at 4 1/2 months (sitting at 4 months) pulled up in her crib shortly after that. she cruised at 6 months and was fully walking by 8-9 months. her dr said she was very advanced and that she could tell i worked with her a lot too. my daughter was only in a bouncer or swing when i needed to be in the shower or something so i could be sure she wouldnt get away lol.
my friends kids didnt start crawling till 9 months (sitting too). cruised at 10-11 months. every child is different in what they do. they were slightly delayed (she kept them in bouncers and swings a lot).
does she army crawl or scoot? if so that may be her crawling.

My son started crawling at 6 months and was super fast by 7 months, walking by 9 months. But he was a kid obsessed with figuring out how to move from when he started doing sit ups in his car seat at 2 months. However, his cousin who was born very small (she was a twin) never really crawled. She sort of scooted at around 9 months, but then nothing until one day she just stood up at 13 months and started walking (actually running). Freaked her mom out. Kids vary a TON! As long as your niece seems to be progressing and gaining strength I wouldn't worry. Make sure she gets plenty of tummy playtime to build core muscles. Place toys just out of reach and see what happens.

Baby #1 - scooted around 8 or 9 month "army" style. Crawled at 11 months.
Baby #2 - crawled around 9 or 10 months.
Baby #3 - crawled at around 6-7 months!!! (she was running by 10 months and hasn't stopped since).

My niece is 9 months and has JUST started pushing herself backward - but has yet to figure out how to move forward.

Each child is different and there is a fairly wide ages for these things.

Our daughter never crawled.
She scooted on her bottom. Then cruised for a while and walked unassisted at 6 months (so did my husband)..

Can your niece roll over? Does she sit up on her own. I am sure she will get there.

We were worried about my daughter too. So much that we had her evaluated at 11 months. The day of the eval, she crawled over the lady's legs and crawled for only 2 days before she was up cruising. Walked at 13 months. She never even rolled over much. Now she's 7 and amazing. In gifted and talented, straight a's, etc. Don't worry Momma. It will happen in your little one's own time.

No worries at all! Seriously, 8 months old and you are worried?? Some 8 month olds can not even sit without assistance. My son crawled at 10 months and walked at 13 months. Some kids just wait until they know they can do it and then perfect it very quickly. Crawling is not even a milestone.

As others have said, all kids are different and develop at their own speed, it's generally not good to compare them...

...but since you asked:

My oldest son started crawling at about 7months, walking at 11months.
Middle son started crawling at 8 months, walking right before his first b-day.
Last child, my only daughter started crawling at 5-6 months but was fulling walking at 8 months.

If this is the only problem you see with your niece I am sure she is fine. As long as she seems to be developing her muscles, I am sure she will start crawling and pulling herself up in no time. I have heard that some kids skip the crawling stage and go straight to the walking stage.

Both my kids, did it by 6 months and they also were sitting up unaided around then too.
My daughter army style crawled and then also rolled herself all over the place to where she wanted to go. My son crawled on all fours.

Your baby, should be having her 9 month check up soon.
So ask your Pediatrician.

Pulling-up and hanging on to a piece of furniture, which is a precursor to actually standing up, varies.
