I have a 7 month old, very active, little boy. He rolls all over the place but just wont crawl. From things I read online they say he should be by now..is that true? He does prefer to stand vs crawl.. just not quite strong enough to stand on his own. Just curious how everyone else's kids are doing :) Thanks for the help in advance!

What can I do next?

My husband say's I am crazy but he really is... he is giggley out loud it is sooo cute.. and now he is actually getting up on his hands and knees a bit.. I did take the advise to put him on an incline and kind of push his feet... he still gets frustrated and rolls around.. but we are getting there! Thank you so much again guys! I am new to this site and its good to know there are so many people that want to help!

As long as he is happy and healthy, and thriving in all other milestones...I wouldnt worry. My son didnt crawl for the longest time and was also the last to walk out of all of my friends who have children the same age.

He just might skip crawling all together and start walking!

My son crawled so much that he didn't want to walk! Don't worry about it. Some babies skip crawling.

I think babies crawl so much later now. In the old days when babies were put on their bellies to sleep, they learned to scoot around very early. My kids and all my friends kids were crawling by six months. We were also told it was I,portent for them to do this. Now all my grandchildren crawled so late. I babysit my granddaughter who will be 7 months this week has no interest in crawling. I guess that is normal these days.

Hi Candace - I am the creator of PlayWisely, a developmental play system for babies and toddlers. We provide parents all the developmental information and activities for cognitive and motor development for birth to 3 years. I have seen this very thing fairly often - most babies crawl well around 9 to 10 months - some babies crawl as early as 7 months - but the average is 9. One activity to help your baby 'get the feel' of crawling is to place them on an uphill incline, belly down; place your thumbs firmly around the base of their foot (keep feet against surface) with knees slightly bent; usually they will reflexively 'push off' and propel themselves forward. Remember every baby is amazing and amazingly unique!! 'C.' - for more info check out playwisely.com - Hope this helps!

He's doing just fine mama. My daughter just turned 8 months old on the 22nd and just started crawling really good about a week ago. At first she would just get on her hands and knees and whine because she couldn't move, so we would move her legs for her one at a time, while explaining verbally how to do it. We started this at about 7 months when she started rolling around. We have an 11 and 8 year old as well who would get down on the floor and show her too, which I think helped quite a bit too to see other kids doing it. Don't worry if your boy starts going backwards at first - she did and it was quite cute :) It seems like she went forward a few "steps" at a time for a week or so, and overnight she was all over the place!!

Some kids skip crawling altogether. It is an important motor skill for babies, but maybe your baby is just really eager to walk bc he sees you guys walking. Don't worry. If you see any other delays, then maybe you should be concerned--but not just for crawling. He sounds like a busy one!! :) GOod Luck!

Candance~Don't worry about him. My son didn't sit up until he was 8 months old and still isn't crawling (although he's trying really hard) and he's almost 11 months. I'm beginning to think that he won't crawl, he'll just start off walking. Unless your pedi is worried about it, I wouldn't worry about it. He's probably content rolling around and it gets him to where he needs to be. Just find comfort like I do: I can put him some place and know that he will be there when I get back and probably won't be getting into something that he shouldn't.

My baby girl didn't crawl until she was 9 months old, but started walking 2 months later. They do things in their own time, so I wouldn't worry about it. Some kids never crawl and go straight to walking. Crawling isn't considered a developmental milestone either, so if he never does it, he isn't missing anything. My daughter is 2 now and her pediatrician just told us at her 2 year appointment that she is at a 3 year old level developmentally (physically and verbally). Don't worry! He'll be on the move when he's ready.

It's important to remember, as previously noted, that they do all follow their own schedules. The milestone charts are simply guidelines that reflect averages. Some may do things earlier and other things later and it can still be considered "normal". It's a bell curve. My son started crawling and cruising at 6 months exactly, his cousin didn't until after 1 yr yet her ped was not concenred one bit. Give him some time and be sure he's getting plenty of tummy time. This will help him develop those upper body muscles needed for crawling.

it's important to remember that every baby does stuff on their own schedule! My (now) 3 year old didn't even sit unassisted until he was 8 months old. My daughter was army crawling at 4.5 months and didn't really crawl until Thanksgiving day. At 11 months she's perfectly happy to just sit and watch the world! She could walk if she tried but, it's more fun to bounce when standing instead of walking!!

My guess is that he gets where he wants to by rolling and that's perfectly fine. As long as he's healthy he is fine and will be on the move in no time!

I have worked in childcare for 13 years now, and I have babysat several children who never crawled and they turned out just fine. Let your pedi know at his next check-up, but if he's not worried just enjoy being able to relax. You know how hard it is going to be once he walks, so enjoy him while he's little.

My son rolled all over the place too untill about 8 months. Then he started crawling but not too long after (begining of 10 months) he started walking! They all develope so differently.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. I have a 6 month old and we are still working on sitting up alone. My other two boys sat up on their own for awhile and they didn't start crawling until they were about 8-9 months old. Just keep practicing and don't compare your child to others cause they all go at different paces. If your doctor isn't concerned then I wouldn't be either.

All but one of my kids walked first then crawled! My earliest began walking at almost 9 months and my latest was about 10 1/2 months so they didn't crawl til later.

All kids are different. Some kids won't crawl because they don't like the way the carpet feels on their knees so they do an army man crawl. Some just never really crawl.

It is hard to not compare kids, especially when you are around people that do this. Kids are all different and when they are ready to do something will do it!

Good luck!

I am the mother of 2 boys (currently ages 7 & 9). My boysst did the same thing. They would roll everywhere instead of crawling until they were about 7 or 8 months. Then he started to crawl (my oldest crawled backwards first) and then shortly after that they was walking and getting into everything and haven't slowed down since.

My sister had two girls and they seemed to do it as little sooner than my boys. They say girls develope faster than boys so that may have something to do with it also.

I also have a 7 month old - a little girl - but not so little! She already weighs about 22 pounds! She's not crawling yet, and really not moving as much as your son. I think she's just so big! Anyway, there are always individual differences in development - is he hitting all his other milestones with language and so forth? Sounds like he's on the verge of being able to crawl. You can always encourage him to crawl by placing a favorite toy just out of reach or lying down with him and encouraging him to come to you. If he's still not crawling in a few weeks, then I would just check in with his pediatrician. You're in for it when he takes off!

Here's the thing - they are all different. Some crawl, some go staright to walking. My youngest did the "military crawl" for about 3 months and NEVER crawled on his knees UNTIL he learned to walk. He ended up being an early walker. I wouldn't worry about it - just think - the less mobile they are, the less you have to worry about him getting into! I assure you that he will find a way to get where he wants to go! Have fun!

Every baby is different, and the books give you the average ages that most children do things. Your pediatrician can rule out any bone/muscle impairments that would keep him from crawling. Our developmental pediatrician told me not to be concerned until my child was 12 months old and not crawling, because everything else checked out fine w/ him. Sure enough, he started crawling at 10 months. He was a late walker too, not walking until 17 months. (She told me she would see him again if he wasn't walking at 18 months.) But, once he crawled he crawled faster than anything I've ever seen, and once he walked he was literally running and well balanced within 2 weeks.
