Picking a New Pediatrician

Can you give me some advice on how to pick a new pediatrician? I am interested in a few of the referrals given by mamasource moms, but I don't want to wait to set up an appointment with one of them when my girls are sick. I also feel kind of silly going and interviewing the doctors to see if we like them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Dr Alvis, a pedi in McKinney has a spot on his web page about how to pick a pedi- http://www.stonebridgepediatrics.com/making_the_choice.html

Personality is the biggest factor ( I work for 5 different pedi's in one office and all are very different. Talk to your friends who expect similar things from their doc (do you want 24/7 access to the MD or will you be ok talking w/ a nurse, do they have evening office hours? Do they call in antibiotics? etc....) and ask for your frineds referalls. Most Docs will do no cost consults, so I would schedule a couple and just talk with the docs, see the office and go from there.
I am a Pediatric RN. I work in one office on Saturtday's and do call for 11 more at night, so if you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me.

We have two sons 2 & 4. We switched pediatricians when the youngest was born. Our first peditrician was recommended by my ob-gyn (who is the greatest) who delivered both boys, but unfortunately, we we're crazy about the dr.'s bedside manner. I felt silly too about interviewing drs but decided that we had to to make sure we switched to someone we really liked. We interviewed a couple of doctors and asked them in (as neutrally as possible)how they would handle certain matters. We brought our son with us so that he could meet the doctors too. We were so pleased with our doctor's responses that we picked him and he and his partners have all been great. (by the way we picked pediatricians of dallas on walnut hill & greenville. i already made a plug for them in the referrals, and saw that there was another mom who did too.) Good luck!

p.s. - in case you need my email address i'm providing it...but don't feel obligated to respond. :)

You should NOT feel silly about interviewing doctors! I moved here two years ago and I just now found a pedi I like (after moving practices twice). I decided that I needed to meet the doctors first hand and ask in person how they felt and approach different things (including their approach to scheduling....I got tired of waiting up to an hour at the previous practice I was at).

My two cents is that interviewing the doc's will save you time in the long run and you'll be more likely to be satisfied with your final choice.

Any pedi worth his/her salt will have consultation appts available each week to meet potential parents. AND, they should not charge for these appts.

Good luck!
