Peeling Blisters on Newborns Lips

My 5 week old keeps getting blisters on her lips, then they peel off and after a day or so more are on her lips again. They look like little disks of skin - is that normal, should I put something on her lips?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You guys are GREAT!!
I got allot of response which really put my mind at ease and gave me options. I used both breast milk and nipple cream and the blisters were under control by the next week. Perfect timing too - we did our family portraits and she had beautiful little lips to go with her angelic face! THANKS ALL!!

I think she might just have chapped lips, a sign of dehydration. Could she have a stuffy nose that is making her breathe through her mouth? You could try a little unflavored lip balm to see if that helps. Try saline drops for a stuffy nose.

it is normal as far as I know, my son had them around that age too. they were just soft blisters and the skin would eventually peel off on it's own. being that young her lip skin is very sensitive and she is now sucking a lot for food. The lips are getting a workout, therefore a blister appears. As long as they don't seem to be bothering her, she'll be fine and it will eventually quit happening. My son's 9 months old and being a first time mom is the most unbelievably challenging experience I've ever had. Hang in there. I've figured out, more times than not everything is fine and normal. God Bless.

This is very normal. I does not hurt the baby. Just don't pick at it unless you see it is hanging by a thread.

I think it is more common in nursing babies.

Don't fret and don't pick.

Congratulations.

Can I recommend a great book that brought much peace to our home and confidence to my parenting?

Baby Wise by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo.
Order it off ebay, buy it from Borders or see of your library has it. It talks about feeding, sleep routines and how to know what to do and when.

Any more questions about the book - I would love to help!

Hello Kelli, When my grandson was a newborn the doc said to put nipple cream on his lips and that helped alot with the peeling. I don't remember him having blisters. Good luck.

My nursing babies had these and they went away. Breastmilk has healing properties so you can certainly use that, or lansinoh ointment or anything you know to be safe for babies to ingest.

I would check in with the ped if you are not nursing~ with a phone call to play it safe! (as you did not specify one way or the other, and this is fine).

I nursed my son for almost a full year and we never had this happen. (He was a full time nurser until two months of age when we made the transition to putting breast milk into the bottles for when I went back to work).

By the way: I totally understand you when you say you dread the return to work! I only went back part time... It was hard even part time~ but those little smiles are worth the weight in gold when you have been away from them!

If it's from nursing, you could even put extra virgin/ cold-pressed olive oil (very safe for baby as it soaks in and protects better than Vasaline) on her lips. I used this to protect my son's lips (and it is in a base of a balm I made for his lips now!)

It is totally normal and I would just let them fall off by themselves.

No need to put anything on the lips of your babe. It's normal - she has nursing blisters and this pattern will continue until her lips are toughend up. My daughter had these types of blisters until she was just about 2 months old.

Hi Kelli,

Congratulations on your new baby. The blister you're seeing on your daughter's lips is entirely normal. it's called a nursing blister. It's basically a callous from the skin rubbing against something, either the breast, or the bottle nipple etc. It does exactly what you described... shows up, falls off, and another one is there to greet you. Just resist the urge to pull it off or it might bleed and it hurts the baby. S.

Both of my girls, my nephew and the kids my mom watched had them. They are TOTALLY NORMAL. Don't peel them. They will fall off in time. Congrats and good luck, L.

Very common for bottle fed and breast fed babies to get that little spot right in the middle. It will fall off and a new one will probably appear for a while. Just keep an eye out for swelling, weeping, redness and warmth at the site, and other signs of an infection (which is highly unlikely, esp. for a breastfed baby...breastmilk is healing). It should go away soon.

Going back to work is tough. I went back part time and it's a great balance, as I also love my job. I find that time with grown-ups is just what I need after 5 days at home! LOL My daycare is family so that makes it easier. Many of us feel your pain so rely on us if you need to vent! :)

If you're nursing, use whatever nipple cream you are using and put a little on her lips after she eats - if you're not, buy some nice nipple cream (ideally with organic ingredients) :) and use after bottles...congratulations!

Blister on a newborn's lips is normal. All of mine (3) had them. If you are breastfeeding, just put a little milk on them. Breastmilk heals alot of things. Congrats on your new little sweetie.

As some other moms said, the blister is from nursing, especially if it's on the middle of the top lip. My 3 year old still gets them because she tends to "suckle" her upper lip when she is concentrating on something. The blister develops, falls off, and a new comes. Don't remove the blisters yourself because you could end up pulling off new skin with it, and that would hurt.

Both my boys got these all the time on the top lip right in the middle. I didn't really touch them unless their lips actually looked dry aswell, then I would just put a little vaseline on their lips. Unless this is bothering her just let them fall off on their own.

Both my kids got that..DONT' PEEL IT..Are you nursing? I did and my doctor said it was chapped lips from nursing... You can use the (can't think of name) cream on the nipple IF YOU ARE NURSING and it should help your child as well as you... and it's totally safe for baby...
