5 Month Old Chapped Lips

You can use lanolin nipple cream on his lips as long as he doesn't have an allergy. Petroleum jelly also helps. If you're breastfeeding, you can also try rubbing a little breastmilk on his chapped lips, sounds weird, but milk has excellent antibiotic and healing properties.

Has he had a virus lately? I know my family has gone through every virus under the sun this winter, it's been crazy. If he has had a virus, he could be dehydrated. I would give him extra water and pedialyte.

i know so many people that swear by carmex, so maybe i'm in the stoneage, but i have always used chapstick. something about the medicine-y taste/feel/smell of carmex, plus the way it advertises "for cold sores", makes me feel like i am putting medicine on my mouth all the time, where with chapstick i feel like it's just plain moisture. wierd i know! i definitely feel like the oddball on this subject. anyway, i used chapstick on my son's mouth and cheeks. either would probably work, and definitely worth a shot! just be careful if it's broken and open, some things can sting.

I would have to agree with the lanolin. Another product is Palmer's cocoa butter chap stick or faces bar. You can find these at Babies R Us. A question that I would have though is if your son is possible dehydrated. My son never had chapped lips yet has terrible dry skin. He was recently sick and got dehydrated and sure enough ended up with a cracked bloody lip. Chapped or dry lips was something that they told us to watch for when checking for dehydration. I hope this is not the case but figured I would pass it along since I didn't know to look for this sign.

Winter is rough on everyone's skin (unless you live in the tropics / Florida). I have a hard time keeping my skin & my boy's skin moisterized in the winter. Binkies are also rough on skin as they keep saliva on baby's skin.

Try Aquaphor. I use it a lot on my chapped lips. It is safe enought for preemies (my oldest was born at 28 weeks / 12 weeks early & the NICU slathered all of the babies in aquaphor to protect their fragile skin).

Good Morning K.. I would think you could use a chap stick on your little guy. I use them on our gr. son's that I keep daily. Don't use anything with menthol in it though as that burns. There is one that is like a gel in a small tube, I have used before. If you have some vaseline you could try a dab of that on his little lips.
Right now I have a tube of Blistex for the boys.

Laughing I made the mistake once of picking up a red or pink tube of chap stick. Guess what It was tinted. Corbin had red lips...lol

I have no idea what causes it so much, Corbin licks his lips a lot and they get chapped. Sometimes if their little mouths keep milk on them while sleeping they can get chapped.

Hope someone has better advice for you K..

I'd go with Ambers suggestion at least until the cracks are healed up and it's not bleeding any more. I took to using Carmex on my kiddos because my son still chews on his lips at school and gets the red rashy look all around his mouth from chapping. I generally put it on right before bedtime so they are less likely to rub it off and it has the evening to work. (I have also done this for chapped noses) and miraculously by morning all the red is gone! :)

Here is what we use at our home.

Shea Butter Healing Balm or Vitamin E Lip balm

Both are from Daisy Blue Naturals. Be sure to avoid any products that contain petroleum jelly as it is not a moisturizer only a blocker, it creates a goopy seal over the skin. Also, watch out for chemicals in the products. If you are applying it around the mouth, chances are your baby will end up with some in the mouth.

Aquaphor should work wonders for you and your little one. Hope that helps. I received samples from the hospital in tiny tubes but you should be able to find it in any drug or discount store.

I totally agree with Amber S., I have used this not only for the babies chapped lips, but mine too! It is great!!

My first thought was I wonder if it's a latex pacifier (the yellowish ones rather than the clear). People can develop a sensitivity to latex, and if he's using his binky a lot and maybe even using bottles with latex nipples........

easy just plain old fashioned vaseline it won't hurt him an will help with the dry lips.

I've never known a pacifier to give a child chapped swollen lips, I'd check in with his Ped and see what they say. My son got little sores around his mouth on his skin from his pacifier once, but that the worst I've seen. I'm not sure what to put on them... maybe a little vaseline b/c obviously he'll probably lick off whtever you put on them.

Try Eucerin Aquaphor, it works like a charm for dry anything! I put it on my daughters cheeks during the winter and it heals them over night!

The lip moisturizer from Merle Norman in the white tube is the only thing that works on my son's lips. We tried everything and this was my wonder drug.

I have no advice on what may be causing this except make sure he is not dehydrated. I would also think Lanolin would be the best suggestion. It is safe to put on nipples when you breastfeed and will obviously be in their mouth so I would feel it would be the safest option. I would not put chapstick or carmex or the others because they are not as natural and also have some ingredients that "tingle" and may irritate his new little infant mouth. Hope it heals up soon!

I doubt if the pacifier is causing the chapped lips. Chapped lips are usually caused by excessive licking of the lips, fever/illness, or not enough liquid intake. If your child isn't ill or licking his lips a lot, I encourage you to try to get more liquids in your him/her. 5 months isn't too young to drink water. If you're concerned about tap water, you can always buy distilled water.
