Hello -

I am the mother to a 2 year old and my husband and I are trying to conceive our second child. I have NEVER had any female problems before. However, after getting off of birth control in May I started having burst ovarian cysts. I have had two so far. I've been to my doctor and he has diagnosed as ovarian cysts and says they are harmless and will be absorbed into my body. He also says they should not interfere with getting pregnant. We were lucky enough to get pregnant on the "first try" last time but have been trying since May this time with no luck and I'm wondering if it's b/c of the cysts. Anybody out there have ANY experience with ovarian cysts? Anybody gotten pregnant while having them?

What can I do next?

Hi A.-

If they are just cysts you should not have a problem. If they are Fibroids it can cause infertility. Sounds like yours are just regular cysts so I would not worry too much. Have you tried an ovulation kit? That might aid in your efforts. Good luck!

They are really common and usually cause no problems. I had them for years, and felt pain, but I have 3 children, so no problem there. It can take up to a year for a couple with no issues to get pregnant, so don't worry.

However, the cysts can cause other problems, if they don't go away. I had one not go away a few years ago and it got bigger and took over my ovary and I had to have the ovary removed. I think that's unusual, but just wanted you to know that if the pain is exceptionally more than normal, go to the doctor.

I've had them and they didn't affect my ability to get pregnant. The main thing to keep track of is whether your cycle is regular. When I first got off the pill my cycles were erratic, and often longer than 30 days. If that's the case, you might ask your doc to check your hormone levels and make sure everytihng is running in the normal levels (progesterone in particular).

I had a softball size one last year when I was pregnant and didn't find out about it until it was revealed in my 12 week ultrasound. We got pregnant easily after only about 3 months of trying. My understanding from my doctors is that there are 2 kinds (sorry I can't remember the names). One presents almost no problems but the other kind can. When you do get pregnant be sure to remind your doctor that you have a history of them because depending on the kind it may need to be removed. I had mine removed at the recommendation of my OB and the Perinatologist when I was about 14-15 weeks pregnant. They said if I didn't it would continue to grow because of the hormones and could cause premature labor or infection if it ruptured. They usually want to do it after 12 weeks when the risk of miscarriage is reduced but before the uterus starts to get so big that they have to move it to get to the ovary. As scary as it was at the time everything turned out just fine and last June I gave birth to a very healthy baby boy. My OB also told me that once you have a history of them you most likely always will and the one thing that helps is staying on birth control.
