Hi. Anyone out there ever live in a one bedroom apartment with 2 kids? I have a 2 year old and 4 month old. We are looking for a house in new jersey so we are saving our money for a house...didn't want to spend more on rent. Crib is in our room. how did you deal with sleep training , etc? thanks...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This is obviously TEMPORARY. In NYC we live here to experience the greatest city in the world, not live in large living spaces.

I had 3 kids in a 2 bedroom, not much of a difference. Get creative, give the kids the bedroom and you can do a futon in the living room. It allows for the kids to go to bed early and have a door shut ect.

in my place the living room was large, so I placed the couch in the middle of the room. this turned one half into the living room and then behind the couch was the play area for the kids. Kept me from tripping over toys ect all day.

It's not a great idea long term but it can be done and can be comfortable for awhile with your kids being so little. Good luck saving up for that house!

I knew someone who did something similar to this with 2 little kis (but she was a single mom):

You might consider a nice sofa bed or futon for the livingroom and give the kids the bedroom. At their age, you can have more privacy after they are in bed in the livingroom than if you were tiptoeing around when they were in the livingroom sleeping. Then only have the bed out when you need it and put away when you don't. Either put your clothes in the kids' closet or use furniture that can look like livingroom furniture (like an armoire that other people might hide a TV in).

Cozy to be sure, but do-able for a temporary duration.

You might want to look into your local occupancy laws before you decide to do this for sure.

How long are you planning on staying in the 1 bedroom apartment?

I have and it was very hard. It certainly had very ill effects on our marriage as well, and we almost called it quits a few times... people have a hard time coping when they are on top of each other and tripping on things all the time with little children. I would avoid it at all costs if possible. If there is a small dining area, you could maybe turn that into a mini room by making a room divider out of curtains. If this is a temporary, 2 month thing then go for it, if not I would not risk family upset over it.

I'm with some about how long is this going to be for? And if a landlord would be okay with putting 4 people (assuming you're married) into a 1 bedroom? My friend just moved into a 2 bedroom with her 3 boys (age 3-10) and she is going through a divorce. The only way the landlord would allow it was if she shared a bedroom with the youngest kid, so it's 2 and 2. I live in a 2 bedroom with just my son and yes, it's more permanent, but I could never go w/out that extra bedroom!!! We are cramped as it is. Where would you put all your clothing and personal items if your bedroom is the living room? I don't know how rent is around there, but around here a 2 bedroom is only about $50 or more than a single bedroom. I know that you are trying to save money, but also your sanity!!!

Also, should you decide to move into a single bedroom unit I like the idea of giving the kids the bedroom since they will most likely be going to bed earlier. Hopefully you will get your dream house soon!!! Good luck!

I guess it depends on how long. We did it but only for two months during a transition stage and our kids were about the same age as yours. It was really cramped. My 2 year old slept in bed with me and my 4 month old must have been in a cosleeper. My hubby ended up making a makeshift bed in the living room. We were so glad to go to a 2 bedroom apt. from there.
