I second the boiling water... gagging just reading this!
I would also suggest (after the little buggers are gone) soaking the trash can with bleach (use a spray bottle) just to make sure they are all GONE and DEAD!
I have a trash can right outside the back door in the garage. Its crawling with maggots! I sprayed a cleaner all over it in hopes that something happened! I am freaking out! My skin is crawling. I was going to clean out the fridge today since trash pick up is tomorrow, but now Im not!! How do you get rid of them. Still freaking out.

This is when I call in hubby. And this week he is at Boy Scout camp so I have to do garbage. ICK.
Spray them with water and dump them. Then let the garbage dry out before you put anything in it.
Then tie your household garbage up, but they will still get in there.
Boil a pot of water and pour it on them. They will die instantly. I'd leave the water in there and let it get dumped out with the trash. Tomorrow you can hose off and carcasses or add more boiling water if some escaped.
Just wait til after trash pickup and then hose it out!! Happens in hot weather.
If you keep your trash can clean, you won't have this problem. I usually rinse my trash cans every weekend, I put some soap or chlorine, rinse it with it and let them dry, I do the same with the kitchen and bathrooms' trash cans. It sounds silly, but I do it, and helps to keep bugs and odors away.
Maggots eat decaying foods. They eat what they are given. Spray the trash can with water and let it dry upside down. It's not a big deal.
You can also make sure all of your trash is in tied bags. If trash gets out flies will lay their eggs in it.
