Solution to Garbage Can Maggots

Does anyone else do this?

I have discovered that if I do not put the packaging from raw meat into the garbage can until pick up day, we do not get maggots in the garbage cans. I have been putting the packaging into small plastic days and keeping them in the freezer until garbage day. My cans no longer stink, and even more importantly-maggots don't come! Has anyone else done this or heard of doing it? So excited that I had to share the technique!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sorry, should have specified that this is for the packaging and the fat trimmings and bones. Rinsing is ok when it is something like chicken breast, but with bone-in things, or something I've had to trim I find that they get stinky and maggot-ridden.

Yes, that's a good solution. Even if you forget to throw it out it isn't rotting in the fridge and can be thrown out later.

funny you say that! My husband bagged up our old meat trays the other day and as I was taking it out to the trash, he said, "put it in the freezer until trash day to keep it from smelling". :o) very good advice! Thanks for sharing!

That is a great idea! I also discovered it keeps our unfriendly neighborhood raccoons at bay who thought we were a smorgasbord and kept getting into the garbage. Keep the ideas coming!

Ive kept a bag of fish bones and scales, and other "airomatic" items in the freezer for garbage day,, But mostly I rinse off stuff like meat trays, and cans and bottles of food items so they go into the garbage more clean and attract less bugs, ants, flies and such. It really irritates me to find the empty take out containers caked with food, stuck in the garbage under the sink stinking up the whole house. I rinse them out first, and then toss out.

Just make sure you bag everything tightly...I've never had a problem with maggots! Garbage cans stink anyway! Plus...because of leakage...I pressure wash mine out every now and then.

Yes, thanks for getting the word out. My husband thinks I'm nuts because I clean the garbage before throwing it out. I do this for two reasons: maggots love raw meat and rodents love left over food. If I have a chicken or turkey carcass, I put it in the freezer until garbage day too. I throw as much leftover food as I can down the garbage disposal too. This helps with the problems of maggots, rodents, and big messes to clean up!

I normally try to put any remnants, including meat trays...rinsed off meat trays...in a separate plastic sack but normally w/us, the trash is getting full so hubby just normally goes ahead & takes it out that night. We also rinse out all cans, soda cans, veggie cans, fruit cans...any type of cans to throw out or even recycle...rinse them out. That goes for dishes, we rinse out/off all plates, utinsils, bowls, etc to help cut down on any possible bugs that might try to find a tasty snack. We also periodically spray the can before putting a bag in it too to help control odors/germs. So you're not the only one! Good advice!

Bleach and a hose out your can once a month. I have found that making sure your bags are tied off before they go in the trash will help prevent trash from getting in the bin.

why don't you just rinse them off? that may work.
