How Do I Get Rid of All These Flies!!!!

I'm going nuts around here! There are so many stinking flies in my house, I keep killing them and they just keep coming. Already this morning I've killed about 10, and I know there are a few more that keep escaping me. I don't know how they are getting in or where, but it needs to stop! What else can I do except keep my flyswatter close at hand? I'm considering fly tape, but if there is some other method you all know of I would really appreciate it. We never have our windows open, it's too hot for anything but AC right now. Our main door opens into an indoor hallway, and the back door is used daily but is literally only open for about 15 seconds, enough to walk through it and shut it again. Not long enough for THAT MANY flies to get in. They must be breeding in here. Oh, that's gross!! Can anyone offer any advice on how to get rid of them once and for all?

So What Happened?

Do the bags need to be outside, or can they hang indoors? We live in a multi-unit building on the second floor...

When I was growing up, my next door neighbor was an older Mexican woman whom we called Nana (we hung out with her grandsons all the time and that's what they called her and as we got older she really was like a grandma to us so the name stuck), anyway, she would hang the ziplock bags full of water all around her unscreened porch in the summer and there were never any flies in there! I remember asking her about the bags and she told me thats what they were for. Years later, as an adult, we would go to family bbq's over there and the bags were still there and there were still no flies! I don't know why it works but it does!

Do you have a cabinet or something that you store potatoes or onions in? That happened to my SIL and it ended up being potatoes rotting in the kitchen cabinet! Look around, and try finding where they are coming from. Try the tape, it'll attract them! Good Luck! And YES! It is way to hot here! So im sure you haven't opened any of your windows! lol..

Take out your garbage and wash out the waste basket. Last week I opened my outside garbage can and it was covered with maggots (uuckkk gross) I sprayed it with bug spray and that helped. Garbage day was the next day as soon as it was dumped I went and got it and rinsed it out with the hose. If you are putting fruit rinds and or the packaging from fresh meats in your big kitchen waste basket stop doing that and use smaller bags and take them out more often.

We were getting ours through our garbage disposal. Try dumping some bleach down it and then cut a lemon in 1/2 and put that in the garbage disposal for a day or two. In the meantime, I would try the fly strips. We did that and it cleared up our fly problem in a day.

Try to find the source. Do you have anything that is rotting? You might have maggots somewhere. Do you have open drains? Try pouring some bleach/draino down them in case they are going down there and laying eggs.

Do you have garbage around - tie it up - or put a lid.

Make sure there is nothing dead in your walls or basement or right outside your home.

Google house flies for more.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but an animal might have died in the building. My friend had the same issue when she bought a forclosed home, and it turned out to be dead raccoons in the attic. Not to get gross, but it happened because the bodies decomposed.

Do you have an attic above your apartment? Could something have died in your walls? I hope this isn't the case for you! Best of luck!

Ok S.,
Now this is going to sound ridiculous but my in laws swear by it. They are from mexico and alot of my husbands relatives do this and supposed to keep the flies away. Ok, they get like zip lock bags and fill them with water and tie them and hang them above the opening of the door. They swear it keeps flies away. I have no freaking clue why but if your desperate, try it and see! I hate flies! Just about as much as I hate ants! Good luck dear!

WE had them, too! Bought the sticky things, and they seem to have noticed their friends passed on. Still a few but not bad. We bought a couple of different types to experiment. If I figure out which is better (the little house or the pole, haha?) will let you know.

The ziplock bags of water have to have a penny in them! I know it sounds crazy, but it works. I don't know why!
