Nutritious Smoothie Ingredients

My husband and I are on a smoothie-breakfast kick lately. We're keeping it simple with mixed berries and banana so far. I know you can mix in spinach and kale. But what about things like wheat germ or flax seed? Are there other things that I could add a little of and get a nutritious punch??

What can I do next?

I love adding ground flaxseed to my smoothies as well as avocados. I don't actually use ice but rather frozen foods instead.

For Fruit Smoothies:
Bananas
Blueberries
Oranges
Apples
Cinnamon added for taste
Protein powder, and yes wheat germ or flax seed if you want.
Peaches
Berries of any kind
Pineapple
Mango
Nectarines
(the "liquid" you add to these mixes can be milk or almond milk or soy milk or whatever you want, or orange juice or apple juice, and add a couple of ice cubes or not)
Sprinkle of Ovaltine
Peanut butter

For Veggie Smoothies:
Spinach and Banana
Carrots and oranges (Jamba juice has a version of this. It is good. We make our own. Even my daughter likes it).
Celery/apples/carrots (even my kids drink that. It tastes GOOD. We do it via a juicer though).

You might also consider getting a juicer.
Are you using a blender or a juicer?

OH! Google Search "Jamba Juice smoothie recipes." You will get lots in the search. And you can use it or make it to your liking.

What is great about smoothies is that it can be made with anything you want or whatever you have on hand. And just add the amount you want. For the consistency you want.
I don't like yogurt in mine though.

Flax seed is great, but it's better if you grind it first in a coffee grinder.
And a quality protein powder.

Make a Brain-berry smoothie: In a blender, mix 3/4 cup frozen blueberries, 3/4 cup low fat vanilla or strawberry yogurt, add 1/2 cup orange juice, blend until smooth. If the consistency is too thick add a little bit more juice. http://www.plaquesandtangles.com/

Yogurt and milk, sometimes coconut milk, also I use ground Golden Flaxseed Meal, it's so easy to sprinkle on everything! And I like Sambazon Acai smoothie packs for extra super antioxidants!

You have gotten many good ideas, I have just used yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, flax meal, and a little ice. You can not only make a smoothie but pour it into popsicle containers and have as a popsicle or give a healthy dessert to your kids.
Also, make sure you use Flax MEAL instead of flax seed. Even ground up it does not work like the meal does. It loses its healthful consistency when ground in the shell. Buy it as a Flax meal.

If you're into smoothies, you can hide just about anything in there. My MIL put a raw potato in there once. I knew it tasted a little funky but I couldn't figure out what it was til she told me. I would not recommend it. ;)

Def flax seed ground up, Greek yogurt (plain no sugar added), oats, and barley are good, too. Go nuts, too! Pun intended. ;)

Enjoy and keep it up!

Avocado!

I know is soumnds weird but it is great. I use 1/2 ab avocado per smoothy with whatever fruit is choose. It makes them extremely smooth & creamy, plus the avocado is such amild flavor that it basically disappears into the other flavors.

Well, here is one of my faorites:)
Chocolate Frozen Yogurt (Greek is best if you can find it)
Banana (frozen out of peel is best)
Milk (or dairy sub like almond, rice, soy)
2tbsp Peanut Butter or other favored nut butter

If you go with flax seed make sure you grind or get flax meal - peanut butter should cover any possible flavor from the flax.
