I breastfed both my daughters for 15 months and didn't get my period back until 1 month after weening.
I'm not complaining but more curious as to when I should expect my monthly visitor again. I've breastfed from day one and am almost weaned--down to one "nibble" a day, before DD's bedtime. Do you have to be completely weaned--zero feedings-- to get your period again? Just curious.

I breastfed my first son for 9 months and only had one period during that time. I did not get a regular period for another year. I finally got regular at 2 1/2 years and I got pregnant for the second time at 3 years. I cannot really remember what it is like to have a regular period once a month = )
I'd check with an endocronologist just in case. You may have a hormonal imblance right now or you're just fine and it is nothing. Better to get it checked out though! =)
No you don't need to be completely weaned to get your period, especially if you don't have an infant who is breastfeeding around the clock without other foods. I was still nursing and pumping at work and not giving any formula and got mine at 9 or 10 months. If you're doing one feeding a day and BF isn't your child's primary source of nutrition, you really should have a period. I would mention this to your doctor or midwife. When I had my first baby, I didn't BF at all, I got one period about 6 weeks after birth and then didn't get one for almost a year and a half, finally saw an endocrinologist and had a hormone imbalance. Periods are actually good, the more you get, the better your bone density, I wish I'd seen a doctor sooner.
Everyone is different. I didn't get my period until 3 months after I completely stopped breastfeeding.
It takes me about 6 weeks after I wean my baby before I get my periods again. Such a glorious time. :)
For some women, yes. ((I started back up again the first month after birth while nursing, women go both ways)).
OTHER causes, however need to be kept in mind, because it's a sign of health problems:
- Dieting (including just not eating enough to support your outgo)
- Stress
- Hormonal imbalance
Everyone is different. When I was breastfeeding my twins my period returned at 10 months even though we continued for 15 months.
