Good Morning,
your situation is very normal. I breast fed all three of my children and did not get a period during and for sometime after. The bulk of your hormones will be in your breast milk and the rest the body won't even produce until your done lactating. No need for panic.
Be Blessed

R.,

It is completely normal. Some women do not have their first post delivery period until they have fully stopped breastfeeding while some have normal periods the entire time they breastfeed. Both are completely normal. Once you stop breastfeeding your cycle will return to normal within a month or two. My period began one month after I stopped breastfeeding. If you are too concerned, call our OB/GYN to confirm.

Totally normal! I breastfed all 3 kids for 15-20 months. Never had my period return before 15 months (youngest is now 13 months and no sign of it yet anyway). They were all down to 3-4 nursing sessions a day by 1 year old but my period didn't come back until I was only nursing 1-2 times a day. Doc said it's totally normal and nothing to worry about. It's just one benefit of breastfeeding, IMO. :-)

Very normal, I didn't get my period till my daughter was about 19 months old. I DO suggest you use some non-hormonal form of birth control if you aren't using any as I ovulated and got pregnant before I had my first period. I ended up having a miscarriage but just a word of warning, you CAN get pregnant BEFORE your first period! lol So if you aren't planing any more any time soon it's best to use some form of BC

Don't worry about it too much. My daughter will be 10 months old in a couple of days and I have just recently started my period. Not starting your period right away is completely normal especially if you are nursing. If you are worried about it, take another pregnancy test but i am sure you are fine!

Both my boys were breastfed on demand, and nursed until they were about 3 years old. (attachment parenting, co-sleeping, etc) With one I went 15 months with no period. With the second, it was 8 weeks! Every baby is different.
So if you want to not get pregnant right now, be careful because you can ovulate before you have your first period.

Please don't worry! The fact that you're still breastfeeding your daughter can delay your period by months or more. Some moms who breastfeed their babies long term have even reported 2-3 years between birth and menstrual onset.

I personally got mine again when my daughter was 14 months old. She was still breast feeding, but had been on solids for over six months at that point & would go 8+ hours between feedings on occasion. I was disappointed because I had hoped it would take a while longer to return! We’re not planning on another one for a couple of years so it was just nice to avoid it while I could.

I didn't have a period till October and still after that would go few months then have one then another few months.. the 2nd baby got my body all out of whack

Did you have a different pattern with your first child? I have heard that some women go as long 19-20 months with no period because of breastfeeding. I am actually jealous because mine comes back at about 3-4 months! Be careful about pregnancy, unless you are ready, because it can happen before you get any signs of being back to your fertile self. The answer is yes, this is normal.

Hi R.,
Don't get worried. That just means that all your hormone levels are good. I bet you will get your period in the next month or two. Getting your period between 9 and 10 months is perfect. If you get it earlier or later than that, then talk to your doctor, cause some hormone levels may be out of wack. Enjoy it.

Yes, I think it's normal. My period did not return until 9 months. I was also breastfeeding a lot. My baby started sleeping through the night at this age, so was not nursing for those hours, and my period returned. Just use birth control if you are not ready for another, to be on the safe side!!

my son is 28 months old and I still haven't had a period. I had my hormones checked just in case and all are fine. So, that is 3 years since I had one! WOOHOO! I need to comment on what one person said... you CAN be fertile before your first period. So be careful.

The delayed period is one reason breastfeeding if so good for you. Your estrogen levels stay low which decreases your later chances of many cancers!

I would count you among the blessed. It is normal to not have a period. I have had friends who nursed who did not get their periods back until after their baby's first birthday. Don't be too alarmed. Talk to your doctor if it seems to bother you that it has been so long. I got my period back at 5 months with my first and at 7 months with my second. I was hoping for it to stay away longer.

I know I never had my period until two months after my daughter was fully weaned. I believe it's common for the female body to not cycle while breast feeding and since you still are, no period. This however doesn't mean that you can't get pregnant again.

I think the no menstruating is an instinctual protection mechanism left over form the cave days. Blood attracts predators and while a female is breast feeding she's easier prey, burdened by an infant, also infants are small and vulnerable too.

I agree with other moms...this is completely normal and everyone is different. My son is 9 mo and nurses 3-4 times/day but no period here!!! However, I did go online and get really cheap pregnancy tests in bulk (like 25 or so for $10). That way I can randomly take one without paying a fortune for tests! This gives me a piece of mind as well while having an occasional drink or taking a med for a headache:) Also, you can get tests at the dollar store for a buck. Every penny counts when on a budget!

That's where the old wives tale started. People assumed no period no baby. I had a delay in my periods but was assured I wasn't pregant and used a form of birth control that would not effect breast feeding and assured me of no baby too soon.

One woman in my LLL group didn't get her period for 2 years because her daughter nursed around the clock. Another hadn't gotten her period at a year and then started trying to get pregnant and did! That's both to say that it's normal and use a condom or something because you can get pregnant without having had your period.

Hi R.,

This can be normal. I worded it that way because with my first baby I had my cycle right away. I believe I went several months after my 2nd baby. When my 3rd baby arrived, I was 9+ months without a cycle. I would get really stressed. My Dr. and the pharmacist would tell me it was normal. I kept telling myself I needed to enjoy the months without it and stop worrying:) Many times when you are breastfeeding, you don't have your cycle, just like what is happening for you.
God bless,
S.

I looked forward to nursing - cause I heard that you don't have your period as long as you nurse - well that is "normal" for some people - I wasn't blessed like that - I might have missed ONE period with nursing 3 different kids for at least 15 months each!!!

I have learned that NOTHING is "normal"

Hi R.,
My daughter was 13 months old when I got my period again. I wouldn't worry too much. The prolactin that you produce during breastfeeding inhibits ovulation, so I'm sure that as your daughter starts to nurse less, your period will show up. Good luck!

It is quite normal when breastfeeding, especially when you are letting her eat whenever hungry/wants to suckle. You can go without a period (as long as you continue to feed whenever she wants) a couple of years. Your first period will not be a fertile one so it's your warning. I learned this through NFP (Natural Family Planning classes)You could learn more (I think) at ccli.org
Hope this helps!

Hi R.!

Don't worry! It's normal as far as I know. With my first child my period returned after about 6 months. With my second it was almost a year! I breastfed with both. If you're really concerned about it call your doctor just to get your fears relieved...otherwise, sit back and enjoy being period free for a bit longer!

I agree with the other mom's here. Enjoy the period free life while you have it. If you do not want to have another baby right away USE some form of Protection. Breastfeeding can and will stop you from having a period, but WILL NOT prevent a pregnancy. Congrats on your new baby!

I am still breast feeding my 23 month old daughter. I really just started to have a period. I only started spotting a little when she was around 15 months. I am on the Depo Prevera shot and I think it has to do with that also. Depending on what birth control you are on, assuming your taking some, that can affect your period also. Relax and enjoy not having those cramps!!! Hope this helps.

Sounds like pretty normal to me. Are you worried that she goes so long without nursing or that you haven't got your period yet? I'm not sure what you mean, so i'll respond to both. She's not nursing as much because of the solids and water. As far as your period goes, every woman is different. i know when you breastfeed it delays your period for a while. I got mine back when my girls were about 8 months old, my friend didn't get hers back until her daughter was 2 (she was still nursing about once a day), my sister-in-laws kids were all about 15 months. So, I wouldn't worry about it. Hope this takes the concern away. Your "situation" (for lack of better words) is very normal indeed.

First of all, what does your physician say? I never was able to breastfeed my three successfully, so I have no experience with this. But I would think it would be unusual for a woman to have periods at all during this time period because in order to have a true menstrual cycle (not an artificial one from birth control pills) she has to ovulate first.

Breast feeding is nature's way of spacing children and many women do not ovulate during this time. That is why years ago, when American families had such large families, the children were nearly always around two years apart. This is not an absolute method of birth control however, as once in a while a baby would be born sooner than that after the last one. Just remember that ovulation comes first, THEN a period. So beware; be sure to use birth control unless you want another child right away.
