A friend of mine is doing the training for Neurofeedback and says it has worked wonders for all three of her children!! I don't know much about it. Her chiropractor recommended it.

it has been recommended that my 8 yo son might benefit from Neurofeedback therapy to help with focus, behavior and anxiety produced by perfectionist tendancies. Does anyone have experience with this type of therapy? It is expensive and I feel confident it would not be covered by insurance. Any personal experience/knowledge you can share would be greatly appreciated!

I realize this is late but it worked great for my son's, both of them. It wasn't covered by insurance but in my situation, it saved my family. Both boys have become calm, confident, SMART kids.
I would have given up anything else to be able to provide this to them. It was worth it's weight in gold.
My kids have not had this therapy, although it is something that I want to look into for both of them. I understand that sometimes you can find psych professionals who will bill the therapy under "counseling" (I know of one in Rhode Island) so that your insurance will cover it.
You could try MIndflex - it is a toy by Mattel which basically does the same thing. The only difference is that there isn't a monitor showing the brain while it's happening. Definitely more cost effective!

This is a group where I live in West Michigan that provides Neurofeedback. http://www.theneurocore.com/ There is a ton of info on the "what we do" page. Growing up, I was best friends with the NBA player's cousin and my husband currently works for his uncle. Not only has Chris gotten the Neurofeedback therapy, but so have other members of his family. They believe in it so much that it is now provided to everyone at the private Christian grade school Chris went to. I would get it for my husband and son, but like you said, insurance won't pay for it. It costs around $1000 - $1600 for a complete series.
Hi L.,
I just published a book on this topic (http://www.NeurofeedbackBook.com) It is available on Kindle at Amazon.com, also.
In general, these are the goals that neurofeedback 'shines' in: focus and anxiety.
My second book is being written right now: 'Success Stories in Neurofeedback'. I am having a blast inteviewing neurofeedback practitioners on their success stories.
If you can afford it, I would ask how much 30 sessions would cost, as it may take that long to 'lock in' the changes.
