I am considering taking my children to a neurofedback center. My daughter has special nedds and my other two have minor issues. Has anyone had experience with this? If so what were your results?

Hi J.,

The experience I have is not with children but my husband did this for migrane headaches. It worked and the headaches went away for almost 2 years. When they started to come back he went for a few treatments and that has helped because they are gone again. We believe this is what helped when other medications didn't. The person doing the treatment thought she could help with other issues and wasn't able to but for this one item it really made a difference.
Good luck,
G.

Hi J.,

I am a psychologist/neurofeedback practitioner and I am about to publish a 'Beginner's Guide to Neurofeedback' book that I just finished writing. If you send me a private message of your email address, I can send you a free draft copy of the book by email.

Neurofeedback is a very promising intervention.

My daughter is autistic and neurofeedback has bee incredible for her. We've been doing it for almost a year now and she has made great gains in her language and cognitive skills, and is also much calmer and more focused. It's fun for her, too!

My suggestion would be to start with diet changes first. Have you had an IgG blood test on each of the kids to find out what causes inflammation in them. Once you remove those foods, some behaviors will improve. Another thing is that there is a list of several things that seem to affect children whether they are allergic to them or not: wheat/gluten, dairy/casein, dyes (especially reds and blues), preservatives. Start cooking just the basics, like grandma use to, a meat, a starch, a vegetable. Supplements like Omega 3's /Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin B's (especially the 6 and 12), and antioxidants are very helpful in most cases.

We did it backwards. We went to the Drake Institute, spent a lot of money and saw great strides in my son and some in my daughter but not long lasting. Years later implemented the above things that they needed.

Check out a support group run by families of autism and see what some of the things that they recommend or have tried. Not saying you have autism in your family but so many of the special needs areas can benefit from the same kind of treatments. www.tacanow.org

btw - delay any and all vaccinations until you know what the problem is. Too many, too soon.

Yes. I have gone thru it, my oldest daughter had sessions in middle school and my current daughter who had hyper anxiety that looked like adhd is going thru it. I absolutely, wholeheartedly think it is a great thing.

I use Dr. Greg Cantu, here in the carmel valley/delmar area. He is on Carmel Valley road. I think it is also important to be on specific amino acids that compliment this treatment and he does alot of work in this area as well.

We were having alot of behavioral, school work issues with my youngest (now 15) and took her to the Amen Clinic in Newport Beach. Thats the doc on KPBS, talking about the brain and wrote the book, Change Your Brain, Change Your Life. There she was diagnosed with the Anxiety and they recommended the amino acids, off the adderol. I had her already on most of the immino acids but in much smaller doses. 500mg vs 1500.

She is so much better now, has more control, much better about her schoolwork (we don't have to tell her to do it,but we still keep an eye on assignments that she may have "missed"

I am a biofeedback therapist. I don't know what your daughter's special needs are, so I don't know if neurofeedback will help - but it certainly will not hurt. I see no harm in giving it a try. The worst thing that can happen is, it doesn't make her better. I say to give it a try!

HI, seems as though you have gotten positive feedback.... My son was failure to thrive/ ADHD and we like you wanted to go the non drug route. We tried with Drake institute in Northridge. Seemed to be helping at first, then my son actually seemed to get worse... and a bit mean, so we stopped. I know parents there I talked to ... some said it really worked well with their kids... others I have talked to said waste of time and money and made no difference. So... not sure... for me I know we spent about 15K and it did not help for us.... Good Luck!! Cindy
