We used a humidifier at times (mostly in winter) and fans at others (a floor fan, even faced away from her so it doesn't make her cold; I've put it in the hall outside the door as well---depends on how loud it is). This worked great for us with both girls.
It is hard not allowing her to cry it out...I know there are mixed opinions, but she is little and there is a reason she is calling for you. I couldn't do it either and from what I have researched...it is in the child's best interest not to have them 'cry it out' until closer to two, although your child should be sleeping more normally before then.
