Sleeping Through the Crying

I am seeking advice from any moms who have more than one child...

I currently have an 18 month old and a 1 month old. My problem is getting my 18 month old to sleep through the crying infant noise from my baby during afternoon naptime. He seems to not be bugged at night - although this might change when they begin to share a room.

Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi T.,

I think you could also use a radio and/or a fan, just a small one to make some noise. With the radio you could even buy cd's rather than just listening to the radio, with the fan you can just run on low or even a ceiling fan would work also.

I am a home child care provider and all my daycare kids sleep in the living room, to keep some noise going I leave the t.v. on.
So I know what you are talking about. Hope this helps, W.
All my daycare kids range in age from 2 yrs old (the oldest) to 5 months.

I have a 2 1/2 year old, a 17 month old and a 5 month old. I know how you feel. If your child is used to it being quiet it will wake him. The only thing I could suggest is run a fan in his room or a radio, anything that will put noise in there. Pull the bedroom door shut a bit also so that will help keep the noise down. I almost always put my kids in thier bed to sleep at night or naptime, that way they are comfy its easier for them to sleep that way. Good luck and I wish you many good nights sleep, I'm lucky if all three of my kids sleep through the night and they dont all wake at the same time, I have given up on getting them all down for a nap at the same time so I can get one, its nearly impossible, maybe for 30 minutes and thats it. Best of luck to you.

Can you adjust the sleep schedule so that both are taking a nap at the same time? You should be doing that anyway, to give yourself a well deserved break.

Another great suggestion is to have white noise in the bedroom where your toddler is sleeping. This will block out the crying he is hearing from the infant, and he (or she) will sleep more soundly with the white noise overall. We use a air filter, a fan or a dehumidifyier, depending on the temp/time of day. Anything like this will work. Let me know how it goes. I have raised four and am busy raising number five, so I hope I have sent you some good, time tested advice.

I agree with everyone else. Using some sort of white noise should help. A fan, a radio(you could buy classic music to play..or something kid friendly), a white noise machine. Hope this helps!!

We have a 2 year old and 6 month old so I know your dilema well! We bought a white noise machine, www.white-noise.us/. It has been a life saver for us, she can't hear a thing which is so nice and it is very small and compact so it can easily travel with you. We bought the one with two sound levels but we always use the lowest level, so you might start with the lower version and see how it works. I run a humidifier in my son's room which is great because then it drowns out the noise that my 2 year old makes! We could never have lived without this machine!
Good luck!

I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 2 year old. They are 20 months apart. I started using a box fan for white noise while my oldest was a newborn b/c he was such a light sleeper. We have a small house and I needed something to drowned out the noise of me moving around the house. It helped a lot after his brother was born. There were, and still are times that they wake each other up, but the fan has helped. Anyway, my point is that white noise can help a lot. Good luck on getting some sleep.
