I have done this since my two kids were babies. I would put soft classical music on in their rooms. I have also heard that a standing fan work well also. I hope this helps.
My kiddo wakes up every time the dogs bark even though he's 2 he should be used to it and he mostly was but now we've got my dad's dog and he's 3 times as loud and harsh sounding as our dog and it's just terrible when they bark. So the new baby is coming any time now and in a few months they will be sharing a bedroom and I'm looking for suggestions on how to make noise/humming in the room to lessen the shock from the barking or just other sounds in the house. We use a fan in our room for the same reason but I'm afraid to do that cause it will make it too cool in there. Also I can't use a radio cause it will come through the monitor and keep me awake. So basically I need something that makes a constant humming.

Have you tried a dehumidifer in the room?It helps with air quality plus drounds out noise with a constant humm.
Hi there , I use a air purifier . Which is great , you can control the noise level , and it works better then a fan . And on it also cleans the air at the same time . If money is tight , here are a couple easy way to find one for cheap. Try Craigslist.com , and look in your local area . ebay , and look under local area. Or just put a add in the local paper for one , under WANTED FREE OR CHEAP. hope this helps . good luck .
I am not sure where to get them but my therapist has this small unit that creates white noise - just like a fan. It is about the size of a smoke detector and it plugs into the wall and just sits on the floor. Hope that helps.
Go to Radio Shack or the electronics department at Target, someplace like that, and look for a white noise machine. Lots of alarm clocks are sold with that feature these days. They have settings like "falling rain" "ocean waves" "waterfall" etc and work very nicely.--T. content
i have a sound machine, ocean waves, in my girls' room. they're 3 years old. it doesn't block the neighbor dog's barking. i have used the sound machine ever since they were little. but as for the new baby coming, he'll just have to learn to block out the baby's cry
We use a humidifier. Cool mist in the winter and warm mist in the summer. You basically use the opposite of the air temperature which for us is A/C in the summer and heat in the winter.
Hope it helps!

We use a white noise machine. You can find them online or at Bed Bath and Beyond. We've used it since our 16-month-old was born and it does help (we have dogs too, not just barking but nails clicking on the floor!). Like you I was concerned about the fan being too cool. Our machine is small and works on the plug or batteries so we always take it with us when we travel. A friend of mine has also "trained" her monitor not to pick up the white noise - something with turning it on, then switching to voice activated.
Okay...here is what I got:)
I don't use a monitor anymore...I can hear her if she cries. I got tired of waking up because she was turning over. If you need the monitor, I suggest getting a crib toy that plays music, but turns off after a certain time. I use a fan in my daughter's room. If you are worried about the chill just face it upward. I don't use it in the winter though. I have always made a point not to be quiet while my kids were sleeping. Don't be afraid to vacuum, play music, or watch tv while they are sleeping. I can understand waking up from a bark and other sudden noises. Maybe you should try training the dog. You could also try to get the dog to take a nap during the same time...go for a long dog walk and play a lot before nap time. It will wear the kids and dogs out:)
Good Luck

Hi Stephanie,
There are white noise machines you can get. Or you can use a CD that plays ocean/nature sounds. Both of these coming through the monitor may also lull you to sleep! : )
My daughter is now almost 14 months and I have used a little fan in her room from day one. I point it away from her crib and it works. Its just a little one, not a mini one but a round one that sits on the floor. Its big enough for a good sound but not so big to where it makes it cold in her room. We have 2 dogs and they bark quite loud and she has never woken up.
They do have sound machines like at target and kohls, but all of them seem to go off in an hour, I couldnt find one that staye don long and they were not that loud.
Hope this helps!
I was told early on not to protect your little ones from noise - so that they'll get used to it early on & not wake up. It worked for me. I lived on a one way street that was the route for emergency vechiles, & as we didn't have a/c we often had the windows open. My boys could sleep thro' it all! A couple of other things you could do is get a bark collar for your Dad's (and your)dog, send them to obedience school, or try behavior modification. (I believe that there are some good books out there on training dogs) With my dogs now I scold them (not hit or shout)when they bark - and if they stop they get a treat! I give them treats for any other good behavior as well as praising them! Good luck! D.
Try a sound machine. Most of them have options such as rain, babbling brook, white noise, heartbeat, etc. I've used one for my son since he was born and it's always worked like a charm.
White noise machines have worked very well for us. I disagree that if you put one in the room then you are creating a child sensitive to noise. I work with children with sensory issues (and have one at home). This is something that they either born sensitive or not, now it can be addressed but if it is not a problem at other times of the day then it may not need to be. My suggestion if he is only bothered by noise during sleep to get a white noise machine, just place it closer to the child and away from the monitor. They will sometimes come through the monitor. It is kind of spendy, but my favorite white noise machine is a travel clock, radio & noise machine from shaper image. But you can also get cheeper models from Bed Bath & Beyond. There are lots of settings on them and some come through the monitors louder than others. This is why I like the one from shaper image because the sounds were better and less likely to come over the monitor. We have a couple different models after 3 years, but now we don't need it.
Hi Stephanie,
Try Mozart or something like that on a repeating CD.... or whales or ocean noises... you can get relaxation CDs at Wal Mart they are pretty cheap... and if you opt for the classical music you can try out the whole 'it makes them smarter' theory...
good luck with your babies..

I use a fan in my son's nursery which works well. You can put a fan outside of the door too or get a noise machine from a baby store. They play either music or ocean sounds etc, they usually have several options on them.
HMMM, my kids have always slept with a radio on in there room. My husband and I enjoy sleeping to the music so it isn't an issue. I know that they sell "white noise" makers you can use in the babies room. I don't know the name or where you can find them but I am sure if you searched on line, something would pop up ;-).
Good luck!

you can buy a white noise machine on amazon.com
we use a fan in both of our kids rooms and it's just fine not too cold.
Hi there,
We live in a very noisy part of the city. There is a fire house right next door, and the hospital is down the block. You can imagine the noise! :) My daughter is not a good sleeper, but we found a noise maker on ebay express. It is put out by Homedics. It has about 9 sounds and the one I use all the time is "white noise". I have even grown to not be able to sleep without the white noise sound. It is great and only costs about 20 dollars! Hope this is helpful!
You could always get one of those sound machines. I forget exactly what they are call but they play the soothing sounds like the sounds of the ocean or a rainy night. You could also get a radio/CD player and turn it on low and play a children's CD or lullaby CD. They also have the CD's with the heartbeat in the background of the music. Just some ideas...hope they help some.
