Need Parenting Class Around Columbus STAT

Hello! I have a daughter who is 2 and 1/2 years old, and a very strong-willed little girl. Two days ago she deliberately took her diaper off and peed on her rocking chair because she was angry about being put in time out- she tells us to shut up and calls us stupid all the time. We discipline her, but it just seems to be getting worse. My husband doesn't think routines, bedtimes, or time spent watching TV is a big deal or contributes at all. I'm looking for a very good parenting class, based on medical research (or Biblical principles); but basically a good class to get us both on the same page without me having to lecture him.

What can I do next?

You might check with the local hospitals. I think that Riverside has different classes and they might include parenting.

Hi! Action for Children hosts something called "The Art of Positive Parenting" which offers several classes of various topics and lengths around Columbus. I have not taken a class (yet), but have a friend who did and said it was a tremendous benefit. I will paste a link to their schedule below, if that link doesn't work - try www.actionforchildren.org and look for the TAPP link on the homepage. Good luck!

There's a lot of great resources through "Focus on the Family." I'm not sure if you'd find a class, persay, in this area, but our Small Group from our church did the DVD class in our home (might have been: Your Child DVD Parenting Seminar: Home Edition, but not sure) I know that it was really helpful, and my son was that age when we did it.
But you can go to www.focusonthefamily.org , and then click on 'parenting', and then 'disciplining.'
They even have this free phone number that says to call if you need family help: (800) A-FAMILY ###-###-####)

I'd definately recommend going the Biblical way. If you think about it, God made us and knows everything about us. He knows how to 'handle' our little loved ones, even in their toughest trying times. In His Word, the Bible, God gives us SO much good advise (some are commandments) on how to raise our children. And, guess what, it works!

Blessings to you!

I agree with the others about looking into the Art of Positive Parenting classes.

In the mean time, is your daughter exposed to anyone who exhibits this kind of behavior in her presence? If so, try to remove her from that kind of situation so she won't see it as being an example of how people interact. It's unusual for children of that age to use language like, "shut up," or to call other people "stupid" unless they are exposed to that kind of behavior in other people.

Routines and bed times are extremely important to children. They want us to set limits for them, and they need regular schedules and routines in order to get adequate rest, and to understand limits in other areas of their lives.

I am certainly no parenting expert but I do watch that show Supernanny and have tried to incorporate the techniques that she employs. They do seem to work.

I am not aware of parenting classes, but at least that would be a start. She also has a book, I understand.

There used to be a class called "The Art of Positive Parenting" It was offered around Col. about 5 yrs ago. Look for it at the Elizabeth Blackwell Center at Riverside. They also offer other parenting classes. They are a great resource for parenting info. Good luck.
