Lemon grass oil from the health food store! My 3 yr old used to get massive welts from mosquito bites and I refuse to put Deet on her, so this was reccommended to me by someone and it really works. Good luck!
We are planning a trip to the Indiana Dunes area, and found out the bugs are horrible right now. I am very prone to mosquito bites, so I'm worried about the kids too. In the past I've just used a little Skin So Soft on them. From the sounds of how buggy it is right now, I think we all need something more potent. Does anyone have recommendations for a strong mosquito / bug repellent that is also kid safe? Thank you.

California Baby makes a great one called Summer Lotion, and it works very well. It's a little pricy, but I feel worth it since it works and is not full of chemicals.
i buy citronella oil and mix it with lotion
Kasandra Hesek of Black N' Tan Soaps makes a natural bug repellent. The people I know using it are raving about how well it works. Contact her at ____@____.com or ###-###-#### if interested.
Mix 3-4 drops vanilla extract per ounce of water and spray it on. I promise it works perfectly.
I've heard to use vinegar - smells bad but works on mosquitos. Or you could go to Whole Foods - they've got some organic/natural stuff.
There are many versions in the stores that are Deet free and made for familys. Just look at the labels.
Wow, Indiana Dunes. I used to visit the Dunes alot when I was in High School.
Let me introduce myself. My name is D., I'm an Avon Repesentative. I too used the original Skin So Soft for the bugs. Now I use the Skin So Soft Bug Guard Aerosol Spray even for the kids. Good for bugs especially sand flie and it has an SPF 30. I'm proud to say it works. Bug Guard comes in pumps, sprays, lotions even towelettes and all half price last time for season. Visit my website www.youravon.com/dbelzey.
Off! Smooth & Dry is a "family" safe repellent that works well when you're out & about. It doesn't smell or feel sticky. It's a great repellent that is safe and effective.
Off! Clip On is PERFECT for when you're in one spot and not moving around - like fishing or around the campfire or table. This is a new technology that protects a 5 foot radius and you don't put it on your skin at all so it's perfect for families. The refills last for 12 hours and they don't have to be continuous hours (it can be turned on & off). It's pricey but it does work.
Citronella candles do not repel mosquitos. Another option is the Off! Lamp & Lantern which work well too for products that you don't need to put on skin.
The off clip on fan.
I suggest melaleuca oil mixed w/ lotion and rubbing on exposed skin. You can also add melaleuca oil to Tough and Tender to spray (or to Tough & Tender wipes for a more convenient repellent). All of these are non-toxic and kid safe. Got to www.livetotalwellness.com/madden for more information.
I use a blend of several products that contain tea tree oil. It's a formula that has been tested in the rainforest in Brazil (not by me, lol) and the beaches of Panama City during black fly season (by ME!) It's incredible and only needs to be reapplied every shower or bath. If you're interested I can tell you where I get it. It's also non-toxic unlike the Skin so Soft.

Badgers Balm is ____@____.com and has a toxicity rating of 0 (lowest score!) on the EWG cosmetic rating site
We used Bug Off, works well. I found it at the Vitamin Shoppe.
I have a friend that has a whole blog page on natural products from house cleaning to face products and everything in between. She researches all the products listed and she posted this last night. I guess I was meant to send it to you.

If you're trying to avoid a product with DEET, try Picardin (found in many brand repellents). It has a similar efficacy to DEET without all of the toxic side effects. It also has a mild odor and will not damage fabric or plastics. As a soon-to-be pharmacist, this is what I am comfortable using on my daughter (who is 2). Just a note that lemon oil (oil of lemon eucalyptus) is not safe for children <3! Natural remedies can be just as toxic as DEET, if not more so. Hope this is helpful.
