Need Help, I'm Desperate!!!

Yes i've had that problem with my daughter also. what worked wonders is lotriamin (sp?) the foot cream. it cleared it up in a day!!

I went through this same thing with my son . He will get this same thing every now and then and the best tip I got was from my mom. Use half Dr.Smith's ointment and half Desitin, mix it and apply a generous amount every diaper change. Do not use a wipee for cleaning BM's. This would cause my son's irritation to get worse and he would scream in pain. I would wash it in the tub using the hand held shower head. I hope this helps you out if you haven't tried it !

i have had the same thing happen to my daughter when she was little . . have you tried a balm called BAG BALM? It comes in a green can and is used primarily for cows udders, but believe me it works! I got to warn you though it DOES NOT smell very good. Just lather her butt up with a thick layer of the stuff after every changing. It worked wonders for my daughter! It also works great for elbows or knees or any place else that is dry and chapped. Let me know what you think. Hope it works as great as it does for me!!! Cause yes if you look in my medicine cabinet you will still see the big green can of BAG BALM!!!!

Ask your pediatrician about a compounded diaper rash cream w/ zinc oxide - We have had to get some of it for our son, on the tube it says "pad" creme. The quick pharmacy in round rock is the one who compounded it for us from our peditricians prescription. Also, our dr told us to avoid wipes and try to was my son's bottom with soap and water and air dry before putting any creme on. if the bottom is at all wet the creme traps water skin.

As far as bm are concerned, have you tried lactobacilus gg - its over the counter and is sold in powder form. you can just mix in with food.

My best friend is a pediatric nurse practitioner. She always recommends what she calls "Magic Butt Cream." In a little tupperware container (or similar) combine equal parts Desitin, Monistat (or other yeast infection/anti-fungal cream), add enough Maalox (or Mylanta) **NOT MINT FLAVORED** to make it creamy but not runny. The Monistat fights the fungal infection that is the result of the antibiotics, the maalox will cut the acid in the runny poop (which is also the result of the antibiotic, it kills all the good bacteria in the intestines). And the Desitin seals the skin and helps it heal. This stuff was a miracle for all three of my kids!

Also, unless she has a dairy allergy, you can give her yogurt (Stonyfield Farms makes a good baby yogurt). It will help restore the good bacteria to her intestines and balance things for her. You can also give her acidophilus milk. If she does have milk allergies, ask your pediatrician to recommend an acidophilus supplement for her.

One last thing, if you have time, you can clean her little bum with the sprayer in your kitchen sink...or since she's getting bigger, I'm sure, if you have a handheld shower sprayer, with that. The warm water can be soothing and it can sometimes get more of the "yuckies" out than wiping. Then let her walk around naked for a while. Bless her heart. I hope she feels better soon!

Stop using baby wipes. Use warm wash cloths to clean her bottom. My granddaughter had the same problem when she was a newborn and what we figured out was that the wipes dried her skin out. Because she was dirtying her diaper so often, we had to wipe her and they just irritated her already sensitive skin. So all we use now is a wash cloth and we have not had a diaper rash since there. Also try moisturizing her bottom every time you have to clean her. Restore the moisture to her skin and I think you may see some difference. We used all different wipes. I think that we tried all on the market, even sensitive skin, the ones with aloe...etc.

A NICU nurse recommended that I buy "Bourdeaux's Butt Paste" before my daughter was discharged. Now, I swear by it!! This stuff is amazing, it's very soothing and works much faster than the regular stuff.

I have two boys and what I did both times is put vasaline on their bottoms, because that will make the poop and urine roll of the skin and that seemed to help alot

I feel your pain.. My daughter has a problem pooping. and a while back they started on some meds. well until we can get the dose right she had the worse runny poo. She was so red on the bottom and blister like. I call the dr that night 1am.. She call in a script which was great.. its called...1% silver sufadiazine... Its used for burn people. she thought to try it. with in that day it healed and u never new she had this rash.. I put it on her for 5 days 3x day.. ask your doctor.. tell them you know its a burn cream but you know someone whos dr gave it to her child... My dr names is Dr. stenson(sp?) in dripping springs... Also try oat meal bath.. that helped... Good luck..

As recommended by our pediatrician...Corona Ointment. Not a prescription, but purchased at the pharmacy counter. Don't be alarmed, as the container says it is for animals (much like mane and tail shampoo) but it is widely used. Works great, and unlike other creams, it stays on and doesn't wipe rub off as soon as you put the diaper on. About 7 dollars for a tube that should last quite a long time. I get it at walgreens, and we use it for everything from diaper rash to cuts and sunburns or blisters. It is fantastic stuff, and will replace your diaper rash cream, neosporin, and most everything in between! Love it! Good Luck!

I had this same problem with my son starting at around age 1. What finally worked for us was baking soda baths at night and a presciption cream that is actally a compound made from an ulcer medicine crushed into cream. We still have flare-ups even at age 2 because for my son it seems to be acid from food that ends up in his poop. By trial and error we had to take things like yogurt, juice, and jelly out of his diet becuase the acids were not breaking down enough before he expelled them and they were burning his bottom. We are finally re-introducing these foods into his diet and he is handling them just fine. Good luck. Also, when it was really bad I would give him tylenol to ease the pain and help him sleep. And sometimes I would have him eat and play standing up because he hurt too bad to sit down.

I have a friend whos baby really suffered like that. She finally took her to a dermatologist (I don't think there are any baby specialist in SA but I really like Dr Henslee, she took her there and my son sees him for other reaons...###-###-####)he gave her a special cream that finally cleared it up. It did turn out to be an infection but My friends poor baby really suffered, too, bleeding, soars and everything, so I would suggest a dermatologist could really help! Best of luck!

Don't think I'm nuts - just do it and trust me!
1) use Lotrimin (yes, I know that its for feet - but it is the best over-the-counter treatment for fungal infection aka yeast infection out there!)

2) help your poor darling feel better by patting her tushy with some cornstarch! it is oh so soothing and will help tremendously

3) don't use soap on that area as the soap in her bath is irritating her more. Use an oatmeal sitz-bath approach until the lotrimin kicks in!

4) start using fragrance-free hypoallergenic wipes - from now until the end of the wipe-using days!

Yes, I have been there! These things will help asap!

Hi J.. We've gone thru the same thing. Best thing i found was Dr. Smiths and baby corn starch. Apply the cream and then powder it down with the corn starch. The starch helps keep your ointments on longer. Also use warm washcloths instead of wipes. Sometimes the wipes just irritate the rash more. Good luck. Hope all turns out well.

Please go to or talk to a pharmacist/holistic specialist at People's Pharmacy. Antiobiotics can have a devastating effect on a baby's immune system and make them more susceptible to yeast, which will look like a diaper rash. For now, I would try putting plain yogurt on her bottom until you can get her a good probiotic. Your pediatrician will tell you that it is par for the course for her to have a rash during a round of antiobiotics, but it's not necessary for her to be in pain. Hi J.. I have two suggestions for you, both work great. You can try using cornstarch. Just pat the powder on the infected area, it works great and doesn't take long. Also, you can try using the combination of Maalox and aqua phor. I think that is what it is called, it's like a vaseline and they have it in baby formula but it doesn't matter if it's for baby or original. You can find the exact measurements online for it. It is very hard to mix together but works GREAT. I hope this advice helps, I know how your heart aches for your little babies when they are in pain. Good luck!

It may be something that she is eating. I babysat a little girl once who was switching from formula to milk and she broke out like that. Try changing her diet.

I can't believe your doctor didn't think of a yeast infection! The worst thing you can do for a yeast infection is have anti-biotics on board because it kills the natural balance of bacterias in the body. What you've described sounds like a normal fungal infection and they THRIVE on warm moist areas (like diapers!)

I read the other posts and several were right on about not using wipes, soothing with a sitz bath and using plain cornstarch. All those things also work well when battling a fungal infection (not to mention just everyday irritation) Drop by the pharmacy and ask for anti-fungal cream that's safe for a baby. If it's fungal, you'll see results within 24 hours. In the meantime, try to keep acidic food and drinks to a minimum - just to reduce the irritation. Good luck!

My second son went through that. We had to use Nystatin (for yeast infections). You get a prescription from the pediatrician. Also, we had to change the brand of diapers we were using. Even though that brand worked for my first son, we had to go a little bit more expensive with the second son. Also, you can rinse her little bottom off with water in the tub instead of wiping when the sores are bleeding. She won't scream quite as much. Good luck! So sorry to hear your baby is going through this!

My son had the same problem. It is possible she is having a reaction to the oral antibiotics. I would stop the oral antibiotics all together and continue to use the cream. If the cream does not work, when my son was a baby (15 years ago) the hospital gave me the diaper rash ointment they used on aids babies (they said the AIDs babies had horrible rashes) and it cleared everything up very quickly. If you have a compound phamacist near you go ask them what the best diaper rash ointment is and they can mix you up something very powerful. Hope she gets better, I know it is misserable and very worrysome!

When that happens to my daughter she ends up getting a yeast infection Really resd and starts to bubble up than bleeds. If the doctor wount give you any cream than go get monastat 3 use the cream on her rash The pharmist told me that He said to switch it out every other changing I used it about 3 to 4 times in a row it helped. Every time she is in a dirty diaper more than about 5 mins that happens to her sometimes the diaper rash cream form Walmart brand works and sometimes she need the other.
the baby wipes She couldn't use the sented ones the break her out.but the nonsented ones don't. I have to take nonsented one to mothersday out and have here name on the box so she don't break out.
Watch the juice that she is drinking. Apple juice will give my daughter the runs. Good luck

When I was a Mary Kay Consultant, I had a few women buy the extra emollient night cream and utilized it as diaper rash cream. It will create a barrier and they swore by it. I would also let her go without a diaper for a while. Could she be allergic to the materials on the diapers?

Try cornstarch. I know it sounds strange, but pure cornstarch works.

I would take her to the doctor...it sounds serious. They have a special cream for that....also. it may be more than a rash. I would have a doctor see it.

My son had this for several months when he was an infant (he had a roto virus), this is what the Dr. had us do.

1. Soak cotton balls in a container full of baby oil and use these instead of wipes.

2. No soap in the bathtub, just water and lotion afterwards.

3. On the rash, put corona all over the bottom as thick as you can get it (bought at walmart, actually made for horse and cattle sores) and then put baby powder with cornstarch on top of this, it makes such a thick paste that NOTHING will get through it onto the skin.

4. Use the BRAT diet until she is over the loose stools (bread, rice, apples, toast)

5. NO more antibiotics, they are probably making the rash and poop worse instead of better!

clean the baby with very mild soap and either air dry or pat dry the baby. Then use either petrolium jelly or baby powder. As for what the baby is eating. You can boil some rice one cup of rice to 3 cups water and you boil it till you see some white foam on top of the water. Let sit till it cools off and give the baby the rice water to drink do not add any sugar or anything you can mix it with the milk but nothing else. This will help baby not get a loose bowel. Try to limit babies sugar in take because that usually is what causes such a raw rash. Feed rice water at least for a day and you will see the baby will get better.

my son never has had diaper rash to the point where he bled...but he has had some pretty severe diaper rash and some friends told me about this mixture and it worked wonders. Sounds like you would need to apply several times a day. Mix Desitin creamy butt cream with neosporin and monostat 7 cream. Apply liberally.

try carona! it's a yellow container or tube with a red lid. you can find it at drug stores usually or gebo's. yes it's for animals but works great for butt cream also! eli manate citrus juices until rash is almost gone! hope this helps! it worked on mysef when i was a baby 24 years ago. worked on my kids also.

I had the same problem with my daughter any ointment made it worse the only thing there helped was putting lots of babypowder in her daiper and changing the brand of daipers. She would react to wearing Huggies but other brands she would do much better.

My son had the same problem. Are you breastfeeding because it sounds like an allergic reaction to something she is eating or you are. I had to go on an elimination diet and took out the top 7 allergens - milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts, etc. Found out he was allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts. Once I took those things out of my diet, he no longer got that red raised rash. Good luck.

yes, been there. I used corn starch and kept a diaper off as much as possible. Try changing the type of diaper...when I did that I found that my little two had skin allergies. We did the steroid cream too but keeping the diaper off works wonders and using corn starch (much cheaper). For the bleeding areas I would use vaseline to help it heal or if you haven't tried it A&D ointment. I know corn starch is so wierd but it does work. Maybe she has a food allergy? If you think anything might be affecting her(strawberries, milk, etc...) don't feed it to her for a while and see if that helps too. Good luck!

I've used two approaches in combination very successfully on both my boys in rashes like this:

1. Mix cortisone, neosporin, and clotrimazole (athlete's foot cream) in equal parts and apply at every diaper change. This is the fastest way (in my experience) to address the yeast, bacteria, and general inflammation that is generally present in a bad diaper rash.

2. Go to a hypoallergenic diet - no bread, no dairy, no acidic food (tomato, orange, lemon), and no spicy food. For my older son, it is tomatoes (ketchup is ok in reasonable quantities, but spaghetti or pizza tear him up) and cow's milk. (Again, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream are ok in single servings a few times a week, but a few sips of milk are awful). This will help clear up the diarrhea. Reintroduce one by one, after the diarrhea is gone, to determine the problem food(s).

Make sure you change her as soon as she pees, too - disposable diapers release chemicals in response to urine (to absorb) that can irritate sensitive skin.

My name is S. S. and I am a mother of three children (3 year old twin girls and a 7 1/2 month old son). I know exactly what you are going through since my twins experienced the same rash that "got out of hand" turning into ulcerations. I tried everything...even steroid cream. But honestly the best thing I tried was "A+D Ointment" to the affected areas. I have found that "A+D Diaper Rash Ointment and Skin Protectant" (the original brand that has the yellow and brown lettering on the tube) is the best product to use. When my daughters get ill, they always seem to break out in a rash that looks like eczema on their cheeks. I apply a few dabs of ointment to the affected areas at night, and the rash is nearly gone by the morning! I also use it during diaper changes and it keeps their little bottoms free of any rash or redness. The product contains Vitamin A and Vitamin D, as well as Lanolin and Petrolatum. I went through something similar with my son (now 2 1/2 and with a happy, healthy bottom). It took some work and extra patience.

Have you tried soaking his bottom in a bath of slightly warm water and baking soda? After a couple/several days, the baths "healed" the raw spots on his bottom. I also didn't use diapers until the diaper cream could stick to/cover his bottom. During the day, I put a shower curtain with a thick (absorbant)blanket on top spread out on our living room floor and left him naked while we watched TV and played with some (water proof) toys. Most importantly, I put him on the BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, Toast). That means NO MILK/dairy and limit sugar/juice (but, make sure he doesn't get dehydrated). He wasn't happy about it. After a day or two of not eating much, he was willing to eat what I gave him. That took care of the loose stools.

My favorite diaper cream is Dr. Smith's diaper ointment, but I had to wait until the baking soda baths, bare bottom days, and BRAT diet healed his bottom before I could start using diapers and Dr. Smith's again.

1. BRAT diet/bare bottom/baking soda baths
2. Dr. Smith's ointment and diapers that are fragrance free/quality/comfortable (Huggies Supreme were my favorite and you may try a size larger than normal to allow more air in, especially if you are going to put diapers on him at night while he is still "healing")
3. Change his diaper asap after pee pee (you should not need to wash his bottom each time because of the ointment) and gently (use mild/gentle/hypoallergenic/fragrance free soap) wash his bottom after BM.
4. When you need to use a wipey again, try fragrance free Huggies NEWBORN baby wipes (at least until his bottom is back to normal).

This sounds strange but it has worked on my Granddaughters. When they were babies we had such a horrible time with diaper rash. Someone told we about a cream that your can buy at Walmart. It is called Udder Cream. The dairy farmers use it on their cows because their Udders become so cracked and sore with milking. You can buy it in with the lotions and creams. Humans use this all the time when they have cracked and sore hands and feet. It lays a protective barrier down on the skim to keep urine and bm from causing further irratation. sp Hope this helps J.

My son gets really bad diaper rash from time to time, so I know how hard this can be!

First thing that you want to do is evaluate her diet. Try to stick to the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) to help to firm up her stools. Too much juice or acidic fruit can make stools runny and acidic on your babies bottom.

Next thing that we do for my son is when he does have a bowel movement either rinse off his bottom with cool water and let air dry or use homemade wipes (the commercial wipes dry out babies skin and make chapping worse). Then of course you want to let her air out as much as possible. When you do need to put a diaper on her I recommend using Triple paste diaper cream. It's a little more costly than Desitin, but it works wonders on my son's delicate skin. It's kind of hard to find, but my husband found it at Walmart.

Has the doctor checked her for Thrush? have you been checked for a yeast infection? My daughter when she was 3mo old got thrush from me because i had a yeast infection. i can't remember the name of the medicine but it was a purple med that you paint the inside of the mouth with and it goes through the body and kills the rash.
you can try vagicil (spell?) i used that instead of desitine (spell?) think about it, it's for a moisture problem in women,and isn't that the same thing that causes diaper rash? i would use the cream and put it on heavily until the rash clears up then use the powder. My daughter is now 21 and has not problems. Also when possible I'd let her go without a diaper to air out so to say.

I have had a similar problem and was told that it was a yeast infection and put vasil on it. It worked. But also right after you change her diaper put hydrocortisone on first then the booty cream. If she doesnt have a rash yet,I would put vaseline on her area that rashes up. It prevents the poop from clinging to her skin and irritating it. But I would ask your doctor if maybe she has a yeast infection. Then they will tell you or at least they told me to use a yeast infection cream. I hope that helps. I know how painful those rashes can be to the little ones. Also when she gets bad, put her in a luke warm tub and clean the area with ,mild soap such as dove. That has worked for us also.
