Nausea as Side Effect from Birthcontrol (After Being on BC for 7Mo)... Or?

So, has anybody experienced nausea as side effect from birthcontrol - AFTER being on it for a while?

Background: When I first got on BC 15+ years ago, I had to try a few before I found a low-dose version that didn't give me headaches, etc. I've been on/off BC as there have been long periods when I didn't need it :( I've been back on Nuvaring since Apr 09, and until now have had no noticable side effects (using as directed).

UNTIL... starting in late Nov/early Dec 09, I've been on/off slightly nauseous daily (not throwing up though). Please note: (1) I have a stomach of steel and NEVER am nauseous except with a clear reason, i.e. TERRIBLE flu, COLLEGE-age drinking (which I am well done with), or occassional motion sickness (long distance driving in back seat); (2) I have done at least 6 pregnancy tests in the past month, and they are all negative; (3) I had a light period week of Nov 30th, and expect this month's any day now...

I am about ready to just quit BC and tell the boyfriend we are back to condoms only (well maybe plus VCF) becz I hate this feeling.

But, I am wondering if anybody else has had this LATE appearance of birthcontrol side effects?

So What Happened?

Hi all, thank you so much for your comments/recommendations. Literally within 24 hours of posting, my period showed up (4 days late, but at least answers that part of the question.) Nausea still here, though - so looks like I need to make that DR apptmt to figure out what is going on (BC or something else)!

I thought I was having a reaction to BC when I STARTED a new med last year. But the doctor said that it was unlikely because I was also spotting. Too high amounts of homrmones cause one and too low amounts cause the other. Anyway, she gave me a perscription med for heartburn to see if it helped - thought it might be stress related heartburn - something like Prilosec/ Anyway, that knocked it out in a few days. My point is, as I was surprised to discover, it is not necessarily hormones. I too have never had stomach problems, except morning sickness.. COnsider it is not BC and visit the doctor to check other possibilities. Also, get a blood test for pregnancy. Feel better.

go and get your hcg count looked at. this is your hormone level in your blood work you can pop a negative urine test alot and still be pregnant so to make absolute sure you need to get your self into see a dr. just to be on the safe side and to get it taken out if you are pregnant.

hope this helps and things turn out the way you want them too.

Don't just assume that the nausea is caused by your birth control. Sure, that could be a cause, but nausea can have many, many causes. Talk first to your gynecologist about whether late-onset nausea is more common with your particular BC but also investigate with your general practitioner whether there could be other causes -- Have you changed eating habits (even if you've "gone healthier," it can cause nausea -- I get nauseated if I eat lots of salads!), are you under any additional stresses at work or in family life, do you drink a lot of caffeine (remember that sodas, even diet ones, contain caffeine, and that can actually bring on nausea and acid reflux!), etc. etc. Good luck finding the cause.

Yes, I've been on it for 15 years, minus 1 year in between when we were trying to get pregnant. My insurance co decided to not cover my current pill which was a generic so my dr switched it 2 months ago. I have been nauseaus every day since. She gave me a different one a couple days ago so we will see. Sometimes its the level of hormones in it I think she said. Also, generics aren't as well regulated as name brand. Sometimes hormone levels of each daily pill is different. You do have to get the full amount over the course of the whole treatment, but unlike where with a name brand every day is equal with the generic you get the same amount over the full course of each medicine but each day may not be the same. And yes it is allowed to be this way. See your dr anyway though just to see what they say. GOod luck.
