Nausea/Vomiting On Day That Period Starts

For the past three months on the first day of my period or 24 hours before it starts I feel nauseated. I feel as though I am experiencing morning sickness all over again. Yesterday was the first time that I vomited. This is the first cycle on a new birth control pill that my doctor prescribed. I have missed a day of work for the past two months because of this. Does anybody else have any sort of hormonal imbalance like this and what did you do about it? P.S. I'm not pregnant my husband is fixed : )

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses.....the reason why I am on the pill is because my period is really heavy when I'm not on it and I am a bear to deal with. The bc had leveled my hormones out but apparently my hormones have changed....I'm thinking about going off the pill and asking my doctor to do a hormone test to check my levels....what do you think of that?

It sounds like the pill. I used to have the same problem until I switched medications. Now I use the minipill.
Good luck,

This happens to many women...if you never had it happen, you are so lucky! I spent many years as a teenager, with one to two days per month at beginning of my period, of being in bed because of the sickness. I never knew that taking the pill would/could prevent this...if you are on a pill, please contact your doctor to see if this is the right one for you. Different pills have different levels of estrogen/testosterone, which definitely affects your period and nausea/cramping. They may tell you to wait one cycle, which is reasonable...but don't let them keep telling you its normal! It's normal but NOT necessary to go through nausea and cramps. No one deserves that!

Best of luck to you -
K.

It sounds like the pills are to blame based on the other post. I just thought it was worth mentioning that my cousin's husband was fixed but not too well apparently, she got pregnant with number 5 - her bonus baby.

I did that every time I had my period, from when I started in Junior High until my junior year of high school when my doctor finally put me on the pill to help it. It did get better eventually, but it took several several tries with different pills. My sister is more sensitive to the pill than I am and a few have made her pukey at the beginning of her period, too. Ask your doc for a different pill. It may take a while to find the right one, but it will be worth it when you do.

I had similar symptoms years ago. I stopped using the pill. My fella is also "fixed"; now, no problems. Period.

If you are worried about accidental pregnancy, have your husband go in and leave a current sample with the urologist that performed the vasectomy. I'm certain having a recheck isn't unheard of. I know guys don't like to do it, but it beats another round of 3 a.m. wakings and all the other responsibilities that go with having another child.:)

I had a lot of hormonal symptoms. I went to an accupuncturist named Mary Muth in Tacoma and she and Doctor Theresa Froelich got me back to normal. I can't tell you how much they have helped me. I went to a Doctor at Multicare in Covington (obgyn) that didn't listen. My experience with him was a nightmare. There is hope with people that understand fibroids and hormonal imbalance.

just curious, is your fibroid giving you bad periods so you went on the pill?

i've been off bcp for years since we first tried to conceive my daughter who is now almost 6 and it has been wonderful! i would regularly throw up every month (all night long) when starting a new pack. i recently had to start up again because i am working toward getting endometrial ablation done because of heavy periods (which made me really tired and cranky). so of course i vomited when i started the pack. i only vomit on the first day of the pill so i guess it's a shock to my body but then it gets used to it. since your husband is fixed already (mine too), try to get on the lowest possible hormone level you can get since you don't need it for birth control. (it still has to be high enough so you don't spot randomly, otherwise i would be on the breastfeeding bcp cause that one didn't make me sick!) i'm on loestrin 1mg but the first dose still made me sick. my mom suggested cutting it in half to start but it was already too late. duh! of course in the past i could not do that because it was our functional birth control method but now i can. i will try it next month as i will not have yet had the ablation. i hope halfing the pill will help my body adjust more gradually. i'll let you know how it goes.

oh, they want me on bcp so my lining won't be super thick so it will be easier for them to freeze out.

I was the same and missed work too. After trying even the lowest dose and still feeling nausea, I switched to the Nuva Ring. You insert it vaginally yourself and it lasts for three weeks and take it out for a week for your period. Good luck and take care. No one should have to feel sick like that again. UGH!! Also, I still breast fed my son just fine. It didn't lower my milk production.

You've got some good advice so far, and I have one additional thought. You might want to switch the time of day you're taking the pill. I'm also on the pill and get really nauseous on them. What I do is take them at night before going to bed, and I sleep through the nausea, and don't have any during the day. By the time I wake up, the hormones don't seem to bother me. I'm not sure this will help you or not, since it sounds like it's an ongoing problem that existed before the pill, but it's worth a shot. Good luck!

Hi!
birth control pills could totally be the culprit in this situation! They do so many changes to your hormones that your body believes it is already pregnant, so you can get the same "symptoms" of pregnancy. When I was on the pill for a short time, it made me nauseated as well. I was so miserable I stopped taking them and went with another method. We use the firtility awareness method which is really simple wants you get it down. The great thing is, there are no side effects!
Hope this was helpful!

Love,
J.

If your husband is fixed, then why are you on birth control pills? Just a thought. I took one pill and didn't like it. Never took it again. I hope you feel better soon.

I used to get this as well. My GYN said to take Aleve, as it isn't just a pain reliever, but it can block some of the hormonal effects.

That was pre-kid for me. I only JUST got my period back after baby #2 (who is 17 months old!), so time will tell if I have the same issues again.

Just to add another data point...

I had this problem some time ago and tried to deal with it for four months before going back to my doctor. She switched me from the generic to brand name OrthoNovum and problem was solved.

No matter what BC pill my doctor gave me, I alwyas got sick. It was so bad after our first child (mini pill) that I stopped taking it. We didn't use any BC and were very careful. I stopped getting sick once I stopped the BC pills. After we had our second (planned) my husband got a vesectomy. Now we don't worry about getting pregnant, so I don't take anything.
Since your husband has been taken care of, why are you taking BC pills? It doesn't make sense. Do yourself a favor, stop worrying about getting pregnant because of a botched surgery. My opinion is that if you are feeling sick, your body is reacting to the CHEMICALS in the BC because your body doesn't need it.
Take care of yourself. BC isn't for you.

That is a sign the pill is too strong for you. Go back and get a presciption for a different kind and talk it over with your md

Hi A.,
It is probably you birth control. Maybe it is too high of a dose of esteregen(sp). Or maybe not a high enough dose. But my guess would be that it is too high of a dose. Maybe call the nurse and let her know what is going on, and see if they can change it with out having to go back in. Good luck hun!

Hi A.,
Nausea & vomiting are some of the common side effects of the oral contraceptive pill. They usually go away after 2-3 months. You can try taking your daily pill with food or, even better, before bedtime so the hormones peak during the night when you are sleeping. You also have the option of switching to another pill with less estrogenic activities, but most providers want you to try one brand of pills for at least 3 months prior to switching. Do you have any history of gastrointestinal disease? If your nausea occurs several hours after meals it may be due to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Decrease your simple carb intake & increase complex carbs (brown rice, whole-wheat pasta/cereal, etc) & protein.

I have a rather extreme hormone sensitivity. I have reactions to any tye of hormone, whether medication or in food. It sounds to me like you have a hormone sensitivity as well. I have always gotten as sick on the pill as I was when pregnant, sometimes even worse. The only thing I have found that works without side effects is a copper IUD. There is always condoms as well.

I used to experience that every month! I know how you are feeling. For me, I was on birthcontrol pills and it always happened of the first Tuesday of the month...like clockwork. Only on one or two occasions did I actually vomit, but I had to stay home too. For me, it was being caused by the birth control pills I was taking. I have discovered that they will all (or all in my experience...i won't try any more) do that to me, but not right away...after about 6 or 7 months on a new pill is when it started for me. Switching pills was a temp solution (for 6-7 months). I have mirena IUD now and no nausea at all. I just seem to be sensitive to the hormones they put in the pills. Hope you get it resolved soon.
