I think it is normal...all three of my kids do this. I hope you get more responses because I am not sure of when they outgrow this stage. Thank you for asking this question. :-)
My son will be 2 in March and has recently started holding bites of food and/or milk in his mouth and not swallowing. Mostly with cookies but it is driving me crazy because he ends up drooling Oreo sludge all over the house! Can someone tell me if this is normal and what I can to do get him over this phase?!
Thanks to everyone that can relate to our problem. We have good days and bad days....today he hasn't done it one time, but two days ago he held a cheese cracker in his mouth for an hour in the car while we drove to Temple for my niece's birthday party! Last night at our church cookoff, he did it 3 times but all with completely different foods after he had eaten several bites of each. A pedi nurse friend of mine says it's a game now, so I guess we'll have to wait it out!! If only he would spit it on the tile instead of the carpet!!

Mine did that this year, but he stopped after a couple of months.
haha...i'm sorry. it's normal...he wants to keep the taste of chocolate in his mouth. He likes the sugar. He also probably thinks it's hilarious to see you frustrated over him making a mess. It's a cool texture as well, so that's another thing. Baby's do that. my son isn't near that old yet, but I have babysat kids that were friends of the family and they did the same thing with cookies as well as like ravioli sometimes. It's frustrating, but don't freak! he's just a toddler who's experimenting and testing mommy
OMG! You should see my soon with goldfish crackers, orange slime everywhere!!! He's 10 months old but has always chipmunked his food in the side of his mouth. I think they just like to enjoy their food over time.
I hate to tell you this but it is normal. And its takes awhile to outgrow it. Unfortunantly my four year old still does it. She does not do it often anymore but at ths same time she now has her one year old sister doing in. I am sorry but all you can tell him is swallow his food or drink.
