SO frustrating! My son has absolutely NO interest in table foods whatsoever...or Stage 3 for that matter, he only eats finely pureed baby foods in a jar and cereal. He does eat Gerber Puffs and Baby Mum Mum rice rusks...but that is it. He will just play with any food I set on his tray (other than the puffs). He will eat a banana if I hold it to his mouth or a very small amount of diced carrot or apple if I feed it to him on a spoon. I try each day to give him something with more texture or finger food to no avail. Is this normal???? I have read/been told by other mommies not to worry but it is super frustrating! Any feedback is much appreciated!
Thank you so much for all of your feedback and input. You ladies are wonderful! It is so nice to know that there are other mothers out there who have gone through the same!!! Keep the feedback coming!!
Update 10/29/10: Spoke to his pediatrician. Nothing to worry about : ) Some kids just have a texture thing with their hands, as long as he is eating properly and gaining weight, no cause for concern. Also, I gave him a fork and spoon (toddler) and he loves it. Eats more food that way. Still no noodles though!!! Thanks again!!!

It sounds like a texture thing with his hands. There were some foods my son would eat if I fed him, but he would not pick them up off of the table. We actually started giving him a spoon and fork at about a year and he loved it. I would often stab a piece of carrot or something on the fork and leave it on the table and he'd pick it up and put it into his mouth. I think he also didn't see why he had to eat with his fingers when we were using utensils. I would say not to worry about it too much, keep offering it on the table, don't make a big deal out of it and he'll eventually get interested.
My son is almost 2 and just started eating regular table foods., We tried so many times but he would gag and just throw up all of it and everything he had had before. He also used to eat puffs and cake and cookies (everything that would easily melt in his mouth), but nothing that he would have to chew a little bit or break down the food in his mouth. He does have a very sensitive gag reflux though and some other medical conditions. Then, around 2 or 3 months ago, he would seem interested in our food and we started giving him food from our plate (in small pieces though). Now, he does eat textured food but my problem now is that, he just dosent want to eat. hahaha. I think its normal to refuse to eat textured food. Take it slowly and look for his clues. Its not like he's going to eat pureed food when he goes to college :) He will eat it when he's interested. Good Luck and hope this helps.
I'd say it can be. My sitter's girl was the same way until she was almost 2!! She'd gag on Stage 3 foods until about 22-23 months. :-) She is fine now. My kid is 10 months old and ever since I started her on solids at 6 months, she prefers diced/soft stuff that she can pick up with her fingers. Obviously, this is not a concern of mine, but trust me when I say I have my own, 'is my kid normal' moments!!
This can be a sign of problems in older children (closer to 3), but I am sure by then you will have lured him with chocolate chip cookies!
Good luck. Being a mom is tough!!!
I wouldnt worry yet but at his 1 year check up tell his doctor. this could be a sensitivity issue or him just being a kid (aka doign exactly what mommy doesnt want me to!!). hope this helps!
My 2 year old was 16 months old before he would eat any table food or stage 3. He has no medical problems and perfectly normal and healthy. I tried and tried but nothing doing. If i did happen to get a bite in his mouth he would gag and spit it out. Then when he was 16 months old I put a plate of noodles in front of him and gave him a fork and he ate it all, all by himself. Ever since he has eaten all kinds of table food but he likes to use silverware and do it himself. Don't worry to much he is not even a year yet. I asked the Dr about it and he told me not to worry some kids eat baby food untill they are 2.
My kids were just the opposite. The lost interest in all baby food very early on and would only eat food if they could self feed. The first finger food I gave them was graham crackers. Even though there's no nutrition, it has more texture than the puffs and might get him interested in something else. Worth a try.
Did he have a traumatic birth or was he born early? These are two reasons why a child may have a food aversion. Ask the pediatrician for a referral to a food aversion specialist. The therapy they offer have helped my friend's son.
