My Poor Sick (Almost 4 Year Old) Baby.

My son had a cold four weeks ago and three weeks ago he woke up and had blood in his urine. As a result of the cold, he had a kidney infection! This was an ER visit. He got better from that, and then got another cold. Last weekend he was running a fever from Saturday until Tuesday morning, with throwing up twice in the middle of the night Sunday/Monday. Monday we were at the doctor. Wedesnday I got a call from his babysitter (who loves him and we love her) and she told me I had to come get him because he wouldn't stop screaming and she couldn't take care of all of the kids. I knew he was being bad because she has never done that. So I picked him up and we came home. I took him to lunch with my mom where he fell asleep at the table, on the table, in the middle of coloring. He has NEVER done that. And then I noticed his right ear was leaking a clear fluid. His doctor's office was closed so back to the ER we go. He has swimmers ear. Poor thing. So, he has also been falling asleep every time I turn around lately. He is asleep when I go to bed, normally around 9, and he normally gets up around 7 during the week, so he is getting enough sleep at night. He takes a nap still, but the fact that he is falling asleep in the middle of activites and sentences freaks me out. He also isn't eating as much and is very moody, but he hasn't lost any weight. Could something more be going on or am I worrying too much? He has an appointment to go to the doctor, but that's not until Monday. Other mom's have 4 year old boys, so I'm just wondering if maybe it's a semi-normal thing, though my other son who is almost 6 has never done this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas!! Not long after I posted this he started to act like normal again! It was so weird! Even this morning he was fine when I took him to daycare. We will still go to the doctor on Monday to get a full work-up, but it must have just been his body being so sick for so long!!

Trust your instincts! If you think something is still wrong, do what you have to do to get them to listen. You may not know what is wrong, but know your child best.

When my daughter was little, I was told that I was just a "new" mom and kids get sick. Two weeks later, after a febrile seizure, they found that my daughter had a heart infection.

I would try not to get too concerned until you go to the Dr. His little body is likely EXHAUSTED .... I would also tell the Dr. to do a strep test and maybe even take some blood just to rule it all out. Maybe get another Dr. opinion too. Good luck - I know it's so tough to see him sick. Hang in there!

I would try to get there earlier. The blood in the urine, kidney infection is
a concern to me. Never heard of a cold causing a kidney infection. I would
want some studies done to rule out kidney problems. Not something to
fool around with. Good luck.

Did they ever test him for strep? My friends daughter had blood in the urine after battling a strep infection that would not go away. She was told that she was lucky that she did not have to go on dialysis it was that serious. If it were me I would be in the docs office or the ER tomorrow demanding a battery of tests to figure out the problem. And when he falls asleep during a sentence is it that or is he passing out?

I think you're right to be concerned. I would make sure they do something to check him out, at the minimum a full blood panel-hopefully they can refer you to a specialist (though I wouldn't know which one). Maybe to check his immune system.

Maybe that is overdoing it at this point but if it were me that Is what I would be doing.

Good luck-hope he feels better soon!

He got really sick if he ended up having a kidney infection. That's rather serious for his age. He sounds completely exhausted, from the chronic sicknesses complicated by an infection. Poor little guys is probably sick and tired of being sick and tired. I would try to schedule down time...like I would not have had lunch with mom out and about with a tired, sick little one tagging along.

One big difference with your 6 yr. old at 4 yrs of age, he did not have an older sibling to keep up with. Your 4 yr. old most certainly looks up to his older brother and wants to do what he is doing, but is not developmentally as ready, so pushes himself. And that will go on and on.

Did your son complete the full course of his antibiotics and meds from the kidney infection? Were there any reaction there?

His lethargy is nothing to dismiss yet. If it continues, be sure to discuss with your pediatrician. But make sure he has plenty of time to rest and heal still.

I would say the tiredness could be from either the swimmer's ear or from him losing sleep when he had the cold. My son had an ear infection following a cold and was very tired also and had no appetite (not sure if its the same with swimmer's ear). I agree that I would follow up on the kidney infection. I never heard of that being caused by a cold either Good luck! Please keep us updated. Your little guy will be fine.
