my son had the runny nose and cough thing thats going around (allergies) and we got him over it, and then a couple days later it came back and also included a low grade fever. we have gotten the cough and runny nose to go away, but the low grade fever (100.2- 100.8) would kinda just come and go. it would never last more than a couple hours, so i just kinda ignored it. well now he has officially got me worried. yesterday he was hot and just kinda laying around all day long. i figured it was just low grade and he legitimately hadnt gotten much sleep all day so i just held him all day long, and went to our birthday parties as planned. when i got to my grandmothers house i layed him down to try to get some sleep cause he was getting cranky, and when i went to check on him an hour or so later he was burning up; like way way hot and lethargic. i didnt have a thermometer so i called my cousin who was on her way and had her bring a thermometer and tylenol. when she got there i used her temporal thermometer and it said 100.7 which i knew was wrong so i gave him the tylenol and headed home. when i got home he had a rectal temp of 103.7, but shortly after the tylenol kicked in, broke the fever and he was acting his normal crazy child self. about 9 i put him to bed and he slept until noon today. once again low grade fever all day and spiked when it got dark. this time i gave him the tylenol when it started spiking and it kept him from getting all lethargic and scary. and he just came home and went right to sleep.
anyhow the only symptoms he has is the fever, tired and sometimes he acts like it hurts to swallow or his head or joints hurt cause he will grab at them. at what point should i be concerned to take him to the dr. i dont want to take him in and them be like oh theres nothing wrong sometimes they just run fevers, and with the change in weather they are gonna be sick. but i dont want to not take him if he needs antibiotics either... what could be wrong? at what point does he need to see the dr?

What can I do next?

Little ones can also run fevers when cutting teeth, alone with the runny nose, see if this is the problem.

I agree that you can always call a triage nurse. However, I DO know that if he has been running a fever like that off and on for 3 days, he/she will tell you to take your son to either the dr, urgent care, or er -- whatever is appropriate. If it is the dr, it needs to me on a walk-in, immediate basis. It's cold season, which means he's probably legitimately sick. It's a good idea to check so that if he IS you can clear it up quickly. Good luck.

My daughter used to do that every few months between the ages of 18 and 3 years...it generally happened around the same time she was cutting teeth...her fevers would get to 105, the first time it happened after the doc. hours so i took her to the ER the ran blood and urine nothing wrong, the next time i took to the doc, same thing ran blood and urine and again nothing wrong. The fevers would last for about 3 days I would alternate between motrine and tylanol...the next few times it happened I just watched her carefully and kept her fevers down and kept her hydrated...i would listen to your mommy instinct and if this is the first time he has done this you may want to take him in to ease your mind...its always better to safe rather then sorry!! Good luck and I hope your lil man gets better soon!!

He may have strep throat - if so, he really needs antibiotics. Please go to the doctor.

You can call and talk to the triage nurse. There shouldn't be any charge and they will let you know if there is home treatment you can pursue or if you need to come in.

I even do this for myself when I am not sure if I need to see my own Dr. It sounds crazy, but I never knew it was an option and used to spend way too much money on co-pays I could have avoided.

you should take him to the doctor if he is running a fever more than a day. from my understanding if you have a fever its not allergies. also if you have a fever that means you are contagious. please rethink attending parties while you child has a fever. thats a gift that is truly unwanted. hope your little man feels better soon.

My guess would be an ear infection they often will feel it the throat/head. My oldest rarely complains when he is sick and has only had an ear infection once but he was crying that his throat hurt during the middle of the night on a long holiday weekend so we went tot he ER thinking strep or something but nope ear infection.

My one year old gets fevers often because he is prone to ear infections and has one nearly every month; the only symptoms that he gets sometimes is a fever that comes and goes (anywhere from just over 100 to 103). I would take him in to a pediatrition because it does sound like he has an infection of some kind.
