5 Year Daughter with 103 Fever for Almost a Week

Well, this is my first time in actually writing in a question. Usually I'm the person with answers. But here's my question...My daughter woke up 6 days ago with a 103 fever, barky cough, swollen eyes, and just achy. I called the doctor after about a day and a half of solid fever even with Motrin and they said to wait til it's been 3 days of fever. Well, I waited and took her in. They did the flu test and it came back negative. She's been in bed for 6 days. She is just miserable. Her fever has never come down. She doesn't have any energy. She hasn't thrown up at all though. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be? I couldn't tell you the last time she was sick, so this is just killing her.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, after a trip back to the doctor, we found that her lungs were perfect, no strep, and that it was indeed the flu. We had a false test the first time. But, exactly one week after her intiial fever, she was almost back to her old self. She still has the cough, but we were told by 2 different doctors that this could last up to 3 weeks. she just needs to take mucinex to help loosen all of the mucus. And lucky me, now my 3 year old has the exact same thing. Thank you guys for your advice.

For the fever, I would try alternating Tylenol and Motrin. Because each med works a little different to control the fever, this will usually bring it down. Also, see about a Strep test. Many times children will not have a sore throat---the only symptom is a fever over 101.

I would take her to another day the fever for this long means something is a miss. Do the other Dr look at her lungs. I use to had lung problems a lot as a child , and I would ran a fever with it. You need to get a answer for this.

Believe it or not a UTI- urinary tract infection can cause all kinds of problems in little girls. My daughter has had them. It comes from them not wiping properly. Take a urine sample and have it checked at the doctor. they can cause fever and aches and pains. Let me know what happens.

Hi J., I'm not sure what it could be, but I would seriously question the doctors office for allowing her to keep such a high fever for that many days. I think I would be going to the emergency room or going back to the doctor as something is obviously wrong. I know this is not very helpful, but it is not good for anyone especially children to have such a high fever.

Also have you tried to alternate between Tylenol and Motrin to bring the fever down. We do this with my daughter and it normally helps to bring the fever down.

I will keep your daughter in my prayers.

The barky cough sounds like it could be croup. I would also try alternating the Motrin with Tylenol for the fever. Your daughter's body is obviously trying to fight something off.One of the body's natural defenses against infection is fever. Have you thought about not giving her anything for the fever and letting it run its course? I would consult with your doctor before doing so. If it continues, I would ask for more testing.

Hope your daughter gets better, Jessica H.

She could have a Urinary tract infection. Did they check her urine? That needs to be tested, so that the infection doesn't spread to her kidneys. Take her to emergency. What about her teeth? If they are coming in, that could be the culprit. I am surprised your doctor didn't show any concern.

Hello J.,

You did well to take your daughter for an initial exam. Since she still has a fever, its now time for you to move to the next step, which is a follow up appointment or a second opinion.

Since your child still has a fever of unknown origin, with cough, achiness and swelling a Doctor needs to determine to what origin these symptoms can be attributed to, like an upper respiratory illness such as a Respiratory infection, sinus infection or walking pnuemonia (which can last for quite a long time).

There are a battery of tests that could be performed on your child and your doctor can order them.

Because your daughter still has a fever six days straight, she needs to be seen ASAP.

Good Luck!
Sincerely,
Angie

If it's not the flu then your doctor needs to be more proactive and get on the ball. She's obviuosly got an infection going on somewhere. Even I, the mom who only takes her kids in if they are practically dying, would go see a doctor after six days of a fever that high. But then, I think I would insist on blood tests, a throat swab and maybe even chest x-rays. I hope you get this figured out and that she is well soon!

Definitely get a new doctor...take her in! My son had a bad fever for a few days and we took him in and he had an upper respiratory infection that could've turned into pnemonia. You don't chance things like that and your doctor should know that! Let us know how she is! :)

Please have her kidney's checked out. There "might" be a serious problem, that an average pediatrician might not think to check and she could lose a kidney IF that is the problem and it's not treated.

Bless her heart! I will add her to my prayer chain.

This weather is keeping everyone sick, at least in our family. No fever here though. But a fever is the bodies way of fighting infection, so I would either take her back to your ped or go to the ER. I know you don't want her to be poked and prodded on, no one wants that, but there has to be an explaination.

Keep us posted. Hope she feels better soon!

Take care,

If you don't think your doctor will do more then I think a visit to the ER would be the next step. If you take her there they will most likely start her on a rocefin IV while they are waiting for all the blood work to get back. Rocefin (sp?) is a pretty strong antibiotic that works really fast on a variety of infections. When my son had fever for five or six days it ended up being pnumonia, BUT he was coughing and having shortness of breath too. The rocefin made him almost completely better in less than 24 hours. Good luck.

2. Get a NEW Doctor.

One should NEVER sit and wait w/ that high of a fever in a child. It can cause irreversable damage.

My doctor has always said to bring in for a visit at 103 fever. But since you've already done that I would take her to the E.R. If the medication is not working that you've given her so far that may indicate something else is going on and I would not wait to see if it passes. Hope she gets better real soon!

I would suggest you take her back in the the ER or urgent care. A fever of 103 is difficult for a child to compensate for with oral fluids. She may or may not need IV hydration, but that could be all she needs to turn the corner and come out of it.Some blood work and chest X-ray might also be warrented. Any pediatrician or pedatric nurse will tell you a child with a temp of 103 or greater that is listless (listless being the key), especially but not limeted to 72 hours or more, needs evaluation. Sepsis is the greatest concern, but usually unlikely. Follow your gut, moms usually know when their child is truely ill. If you don't get the response you think is necissary, just tell them exactly what you want. They won't say no.

Did he give her an antibiotic? It sounds like it could be bronchitis. My kids have gotten that after a cold and run fever with it and it lasts awhile. Definitely take her back if she is still running fever, you don't want that cough to turn to pneumonia.

How awful! I don't have a clue what it could be. I'm guessing they did blood work though? Try alternating Motrin and Tylenol every four hours. It will probably get her fever below 103.

Take your daughter to an urgent care clinic today. Cheaper than an ER and I have always gotten quality care at the urgent care clinics around here. That is too long for such a young child to be miserable. I think I would look for another doctor that takes your concerns more seriously.

My son had a runny nose for about 1 1/2 weeks, developed a cough and then a couple of days later he woke up with a 101 degree fever. I took him in and the ped diagnosed it to be a sinus infection because his eyes were puffy and he had a discharge from them. She started him on antibiotics and he's doing much better now. Evidently this bug is going around here in North Alabama, because several people I know either have it or their kids have it. It seems to just hang around for a couple of weeks, too.

I was told by a doctor that if you stand up, then bend down like you're picking something up off the floor, then stand up quickly and your sinuses hurt, then you probably have a sinus infection. Something about the pressure change....

Prayers to your daughter,
J.

This sounds like what my friend's daughter did last week. They took her to the doctor too, and didn't find anything. Then the fever broke and she got a rash, and it turns out that she had the Roseola virus. She's fine now. Maybe call your doctor and ask about that. Good luck!

Hi J.,

Strep throat has been circulating around Northwest Arkansas as well as Oklahoma and Missouri. Many of the smaller schools closed because there weren't enough children to attend. Did the doc give your daughter a strep test? My daughter walked around sick for over a week. I took her in and had her tested for mono and strep, just to take precautions. It was strep and not mono (thank goodness!). Even after 8 days on the antibiotics, she still has a cough, but she is doing so much better. I hope you can find out what is wrong with your little girl, and that she gets better soon!

I have never heard of a doctor saying to wait 3 days before bringing a child in that has a temp that high. My doctor says to bring them in when it hits 103 as that is very high. Have you tried the room temp bath? It makes them shiver a lot and they hate it but it will sometimes bring the temp down. If my child had a temp that high for 6 days I would taking her to the ER to find out what is wrong.

We had a fever virus go through our family causeing 105 degree fevers for a week. I took the first one to the ER and the doctor spent about 2 mins looking at her said she had a virus and sent us home. I would be worried about the cough. If it becomes worse or productive then take her back to the doctor. Otherwise the fever should go away in another day or two, if you get into day 8 or 9 then I might consider going back to the Dr. Just keep your eye out for any other symptoms. I remember worring about UTI with her also. Also alternating motrin and tylenol should help with at least making her more comfortable. I know the pollen has been really bad lately and my kids have had more allergy issues. That might explain the swollen eyes. We have 5 kids and when they had that fever virus they were soo miserble. We had 16 days straight that someone had a fever of 105. Hope this helps, I'll be praying for her and you.

Check for any swelling in the joints and/or stiffness in neck, shoulders etc. Staff infection gained through ear infections, small cuts etc. has been hiding and rearing it's ugly head. Make the doctor check blood for indications of staff infections or MRSA.

Bless your heart and hers. I'll be praying for you.

Maybe a visit to the ER wouldn't be bad. With a fever this high, I would think they would take some blood to see if this could be bacterial or something. Listen to your instincts as her mother and find a docotr who'll listen. This sounds like an awful long time with such a high fever.

Let us know how she is.
