Advice needed. Landon is 9 months old. And we're dealing with our first case of Thrush. My other son never had this, so I'm caught totally off guard! I called the doctors office this morning and the nurse said that I can treat it with Lotrimin AF. She mentioned that I needed to dry off his lip and apply the cream to it. Which is not a problem, but I was ready the directions it it stated that it's for external use only. And if shallowed by children, call poision control. I called the nurse back and indicated this, but she assured me that it's okay and that they use this for newborns as well. I feel that he's constantly getting sick from this daycare! I'm so sad! It hurts me to see this kind of stuff on him!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First of all, THANK YOU to everyone that responded to my request!!! You all have provided great feedback and support!

With the feedback that I received from you all, family and friends (and gut instincts), I called the nurse back and told her that I didn't feel comfortable putting that in Landons mouth. She spoke with the doctor and they prescribed Landon a prescription.

On another note, granted I've never meet the doctor (Dr. Ashworth, in Plano), I feel that I'm going to have to find another Pediatrician. Landon had an ear infection about two weeks ago (first visit) and Dr. Ashworth was out of the office on vacation for two weeks. That's why we've never met. Landon's Pediatrician, since birth, has been Dr. Susan Stevenson's, but she's moving out of state. I'm so sad!

I live in Plano off of Custer between Legacy and Hedgcoxe, if anyone has a super Pediatrician that they would like to recommend, I'm open!

Thanks again and I hope each of you have a great day!

Hi R.,
Sorry this post is late. I'm an IBCLC and see many babies with thrush. If you are breastfeeding and Landon's thrush is causing pain, there are a number of therapies available.
The most commonly prescribed medication is nystatin, which is applied to the baby's mouth (and to mom's nipples if she's nursing). Another tip comes from Jack Newman, M.D. - using a dilute solution of gentian violet swabbed on baby's mouth usually gets rid of thrush in three to four days. The biggest problem is that Landon may have a "Smurf mouth" for a while, because gentian violet stains the skin. For more information, see http://www.breastfeedingonline.com/yeast.shtml.
The advice you've already received about washing his hands frequently, boiling pacifiers, bottles, plastic toys, using paper towels, etc. is excellent. Thrush thrives on warm, moist surfaces, and can be stubborn!!!
Hang in there - it will disappear with time and treatment.

R.,

I am a pharmacist and haven't heard of using Lotrimin AF for thrush. Please call your doctor. He might prescribe Nystatin for your son. It is a suspension that he will swish in his mouth, then spit it out. If he swallows it, it is ok too.

R.,
I went through thrush with both kids and that seems very strange to put that anywhere near the mouth. Just call back and say you want to leave a message for the doctor to call you back. The nurses are screeners and try to help w/out doctor, but you always can request to speak to the doctor instead. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, just make you baby an appointment and take her to see her doctor. There are prescription meds for thrush that are safe. Who is your pediatrician?

Hi R.,

I used to see this all the time when I worked in a day care center. One little girl had it over and over. Her teachers would just let her play on the floor with all the other kids allowing her to put toys into her mouth and possibly spread it to all the other kids. Her parents topld the director that she was fine. I found out about it and called my pedi dr. He said it is very common and can be spread. They get it from yeast. Possibly from the nipple of a bottle not being cleaned out good. He even said that they can get it from the mother if you happen to be breastfeeding. He said a good antibiotic will cure it in a few days. You have to drip it into the mouth and rub it into the inside on their cheeks. I would check back with your dr.

Also if you are considering changing day cares, I have an in home day care and have an opening. You mentioned having 2 kids, but I'm not sure how old the first one was. I've worked at a day care center and had my daughter there. I'll never go back. There are just too many things I did not like about it. Several things that the other parents never found out about. That's kinda scary... If you are interested or would like more info email or call

Both my children have had thrush and I have never heard of puting Lotrimin in a childs mouth, it really seems absurd to me. But what I would do is call the office and tell the nurse that you feel uncomfortable putting that stuff in your babys mouth and ask if they can prescrible you something for it. I know their is a prescription for it because both my children used it and it worked wonders I just cant remember the name of it. Also, when you start treatment you might want to boil his bottle, pacifiers, and toothbrush so he doesnt get it again. Good luck.
