My Child Is Fascinated with My Armpits!!!

I don't have any answers, just a question. My three year old daughter LOVES my ARMPITS. I read below that one other mom has this issue. When I shaved them once, not that I don't always shave them; but one time after I shaved them, she said, "where'd your armpits go?" And not only does she have to have both hands under my arms, but she has to SNIFF them. I asked her why she does it and she said, "Because I LOVE them." I asked her if she liked the smell, she said, "Yes ma'am, they smell like peppermint bark."
She has done this since I brought her home from the hospital. Is there ever a time she'll get over this fixation?

What can I do next?

OMG I thought my son was the ONLY one like this.
It will go away. Their thing for armpits.
My son loved my armpits too, and it was the stubble that he liked and the smell because it was a "cozy" smell to him, and it was "Mommy."
For him it was the tactile thing about it, the stubble. He liked to rub it.
But its irritating. So I'd just tell him stop it.
He's 7 now and outgrew it.
But its a fond memory.
LOL

He also liked to rub my Husband's face when he had beard stubble.
Again, it was a tactile thing for him and he liked the stubble feeling of rubbing it etc.

We replaced that with a scrub brush, for him to carry around. It had the same "stubble" feel to it.
LOL
But he didn't get too attached to the brush.

Life goes on.
They stop sooner or later.
Sooner if you just tell them stop it.

At least my son, did NOT do that outside of the home.
He knew better.
Only at home, he did that and not around other people.
And it was only ME and my armpits, that he did that too. Because, I am "Mommy." It was just cozy to him etc.

What do you think? Do you think that she'll go around smelling your armpits forever?

Of course she won't. As she gets older, stop giving her access to your armpits before she embarrasses you in public. Just be busy - you don't have to talk to her about it.

By the way, you put your question as an answer on someone else's thread. That's not a problem or anything, but the question the lady asked was from 2010. Her child is 3 years older now and she may or may not even see your answer (she may not even be on Mamapedia now.) So, when you read questions, you might pay attention to the date they were written.

How does your daughter know what peppermint bark is? Hmmm.....

Precious.. Kids are a hoot.

This reminds of the Character from SNL who sniffs her fingers after having them in her arm pits.

Mary Katherine Gallaghar.

It could be she likes the soft skin and yes, your scent, but this is probably not something you want to encourage, or she will do this in public and to other people.

My son used to have an obsession with my elbows and my tummy. He still likes to rub my tummy when he is tired or nervous about something. It started back when he was nursing. We have talked about only touching mummy's tummy and only when we are at home. I know for him it is a comfort thing. When I have asked him why he likes to touch my tummy he said he just likes the feel of my skin. My son outgrew his elbow obsession and I'm noticing that he doesn't reach for my tummy as much anymore--just when he is tired.

My daughter loves to smell my bra! She says it smell is like me and is comforting. It's probably the same with your daughter and your armpits.

You need to start teaching your child boundaries...... it may be ok for her to put her hands under YOUR arms, but what about when she wants to check out someone else's armpits?

Also... sniffing people is usually considered off limits... again, she needs to be taught what is socially acceptable in our culture.

My son loves my "muffin top". When I'm changing him he'll push up the side of my shirt and pet that lovely bit of "extra" mommy. He also likes to "motorboat" me and bounce his face off my cleavage.
