My son will only eat rice with everything. He eats rice with pork, chicken, beef that I cook. He only eats 2 types of veggies, brocolli and tomatoes! I've tried to feed him other veggies to no avail. It's fine that he eats rice bec. it's healthy food but whenever we go on a trip or go out, it's not always available unless we go to an asian place to eat...I've tried to feed him bagels, all types of bread, waffles, pancakes, only rice he will eat, he eats cereal too and loves fruits, all fruits he love. Can't get him to eat green beans, red beans, zucchini, nothing but brocco and tomatoes. Any tips or suggestions? I so appreciate it, thanks so much.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't worry about it. As far as eating "problems" go that is a good one to have. Broccoli and tomatoes are nutritional powerhouses as well as fruit and brown rice. Breads-not so much. So while it may not be very convenient for you for eating out, rest easy in that he is eating better than most kids. My sons really eat no veggies but will "feast" on calorie dense, nutritionally deficient white buttered bread like there's no tomorrow!

I will tell you that you should keep offering it to him. When my kids refused foods when they were little I let that be the end of the line and really didn't push it again. Experts say that you should keep offering as it may take 10-15 trys before a food tastes good. Wish I would have done that when they were little like yours.

Two suggestions (if you haven't already tried them)...
1. Sweet potatoes, my kids love them because you can make them sweet or savory, and lots of txtures - fries, baked, mashed, etc. I love them because they are very healthy and more restaurants are offering them as options.
2. A rice transition plan. You don't say whether it is just plain rice that he eats or if you can make different flavors, but I'm thinking you could slowly move to more complex flavors (maybe broccoli and cheese is a good starter), then on to other noodles with the flavors that he likes...
Other than that, keep trying. I also found that my children would try foods better in certain situations than others. Something that would never fly at home might look pretty tempting if another child was asking for it ;)

Carbs are not just in breads and grains! There are lots of carbs in various fruits and veggies, too.

We used to call my son Mr. Atkins Diet because he was all about meat and veggies. Didn't care for potatoes, rice, noodles, etc. Not so bad really. He was eating very healthy.

Have you tried orzo? He will think it’s rice, but it may be available at more restaurants (like any Italian restaurant).

I was just re-reading a pamphlet about eating that I got from the pediatrician at my son’s 12 month apt. In regards to food “jags” it says “If the jag food is healthy, offer it at every single meal along with other foods.” Since rice, tomatoes and broccoli are all very healthy, I’d say ride that wave as long as you can. Better to be in this jag for a long time than to jump to a less healthy one, right?

I wouldn't worry about it, keep offering him other foods either he will eat more of things you want or he will be a picky eater, not much you can do to control that.

He is only two years old so I would not worry about it. tomatoes and broccoli are good and rich in antioxidants and other things that are good and cancer fighting. Kids go through stages in regards to what they eat. It sounds like he likes to eat plenty of other things. When he is older I am sure he will try different things. with kids sometimes it is a texture thing also. It is great that he likes all kinds of fruits. Just go with the flow and be glad he is eating and is not totally picky.

My son, who is now 11, still does not eat bread with any regularity. He doesn't like sandwiches at all. He eats meat, yogurt, cheese, fruits, veggies. When he was two (and still) he would eat burritos: breakfast, lunch and dinner. So he liked tortillas. He was able to use the microwave (with help) so he could "cook" his own dinner. Maybe there's a catch there? What about pasta? You can throw all kinds of veggies into the sauce. My son doesn't much care for the pasta (carb, again), but he'll eat a big bowl of sauce with or without meat. He also loves tomatoes, eats them like apples. What about veggies that are cold like carrots, pea pods, cucumbers, bell peppers, etc? Personally, I don't care too much for cooked veggies, so sometimes we have a relish tray with just raw veggies.
