he is so sensitive about anything on his head. he pulls hats off immediately and he gets very upset when i try to gently pour even a small amount of water over his head to wash/rinse his head. he was never like this before. how do i get him distracted or will he grow out of it?

What can I do next?

You could also have him lie back on the counter near the kitchen sink, and let him hang his head back. use a handheld sprayer, and you can let him do some too (you keep it aimed right! ;D) It keeps the shampoo out of his eyes, and gives him a rock solid base so that it doesn't run down his face.

Let him do it........Let him "play" with water when it's not bath time such as a water table or a small kiddies pool....sometimes the kids just need to be in control and then they will be ok. Also you can get "puppet-like" washcloths and use that to rinse his head instead of pouring over his head

My son is 3 yrs old now and still does not like water in his face. He loves the water (play in his bath okay, the beach, pool) but DO NOT GET IT IN HIS FACE. We have always had a fight to wash his hair. I could not convince him that by lying on the kitchen counter & holding his head over the sink & let Mommy gently pour the water only on his head/hair would be okay (no water in face). I had to sneakily soap his hair & then wipe it out. I could do the back of his head with no problem but once the water starts running in his face... So far, Grandma has been the only one to recently be successful in washing his hair without a battle. The best advise I can offer is to be persistent, be firm but gentle, be patient, try to make a game of it. Comfort with lots of soothing words and hugs. It will get better. He'll learn. My son & I are getting better with washing his hair.

My little guy was the same way-you might try to stick fun, silly or colorful stickers to the ceiling, or just distract him with a toy. My sister-in-law tried a watering can (which makes it more like a shower. If you don't mind getting your hair wet, you might try donning a swimsuit, getting in with him, and letting him pour water on your head, first. Hope one of these ideas will be useful!

hi, my 17 month old son hates to have water poured over his head.
it has nothing to do with the shampoo burning their eyes or anything...i use the no tears shampoo .
when i pour the water on his head to wet his hair even before putting the shampoo on, he stands up in the tub and tries to climb out.
as soon as i am done with rinsing his hair he is fine and goes back to playing in the tub.
sorry i don't have any advice, but you are not alone :)
hopefully they will grow out of it.

I agree with the other mom - my son loved to have his bath and hair washed until he was about 18months. I finally figured out that he wanted to pour the water over his head himself. So now he does. If he is not getting all the soap out, pour some on while he is doing it so that he thinks he did it himself:) Good luck!

Turn the shower on him while he sits. Maybe let him get in the shower with you. If you can't wash his hair while standing sit down. This may get him used to water hitting his head then he will sit alone in the tub.

Does the water get in his eyes or ears? Stores sell visors to keep the water out of their eyes or ear muff thingys to keep water out of their ears in the pool.

My 19 month old hates when i wash his hair. He has entirely TOO MUCh hair though :-). He tries to stand but I comfort him and MAKE SURE HE'S SAFE by sitting him back down and I WORK QUICKLY. :-)

Hi I hear from so many moms that their kids hate having their hair washed.
One reason for it is the products on the market sting and burn their eyes.
Arbonne has the ABC body and Hsir wash that doesn't sing and burn and it rinses out so quickly that kids don't seem to mind it at all!
