I'm looking for some input on different movie rental services. We have been with Netflix for several years but I am considering cancelling since their movie selection stinks now after their contract issues with Starz and some other movie companies awhile back. Right now we just have the on-demand/instant streaming option (no DVDs). My kids primarily like to watch the television series seasons and the occasional made-for-t.v. movies on there but not sure it's enough to justify the cost.
We also occasionally rent from Redbox but their selection is hit or miss also and they don't always have the most current movies...especially for kids movies. I'd say they are second-tier current if that makes sense.
I have looked into Amazon Prime's service and now Toys R Us offers a family friendly movie service but I'd like a mix of movie selections. We don't watch a ton of movies but when the mood strikes I'd like to watch something that is decent and somewhat current. Also, we would primarily be watching them on the television rather than a mobile device so not sure how that comes into play with the different services.
Edited to add: there are no longer any brick-and-mortar video stores in our area anymore (and we live in a large suburb of Houston so it's not like it's a small town). They all closed so that's why I'm looking for some other options.

Amazon prime is almost identical to Netflix in terms of what is free.We buy/rent from Vudo all the time.
I just canceled the mail portion of our netflicks. I like the instant play because I love all the documentaries and kids shows, but for movies it is way cheaper to just go to block buster where I can get a movie for 50 cents for a night or one dollar for 5 nights, and they have tons of old tv series.
I've used Vudo a couple of times. The nice part about it is that you rent each movie or tv show, rather than paying a monthly fee.
One day my son was sick and asked for a Toy Story movie that we didn't own. That was the first time I used Vudo, and I think it was free (I think we started with a $10 credit).
The next time I used it was when The Hunger Games first came out. I really wanted to see it, and our video store was out. I was not interested in driving around town (or even calling places), so I used Vudo.
I think they are a little pricey, but worth it to me. We tend to forget to take movies back and pay late fees. At least with Vudo, once your 24 hours or 48 hours is up, the movie is simply no longer available.
Have you tried the library? We get most of our movies from the library and they are free!
We have Netflix streaming (no discs) and rent movies from the local RedBox. I love RedBox because it's super cheap, they have new releases pretty quickly after they're released on DVD, and they're convenient.
I'm considering checking out Vudu when we get our new surround sound system.
I also got movies from the library when our kids were home. It didn't matter to them if they were somewhat current or not.
