Hey moms,

Well I have finally worked up my 9 month old to having three meals a day (cereal, yogurt, and baby food in that order) and her 2-3 snacks a day (gerber cheese puffs, goldfish, apples, low sodium crackers etc.) BUT she only drinks about 2 bottles a day now! Is that normal??? It started to kind of scare me because I'm not sure if shes getting all she needs, she is a little small for her age 23 pounds but she loves food! (got her metabolism from her daddy! lol)

and another thing.... does she get thirsty now?? I noticed the other day how she jugged down some juice and I started giving her water or juice every hour to make sure she is hydrated since she cant communicate shes thirsty.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Did your doctor say she was small for her age? My daughter is 2 and weighs 28 pounds, which is in the 50th percentile. By that, I'd say your daughter is doing pretty well. :)

If I remember correctly, around that age my eldest daughter who was my bottle baby, was on cereal & fruit at breakfast, a veggie for lunch and then a bottle for nap time; meat & veggie at dinner and then a bottle before bedtime. She had a sippy cup of watered-down juice or water with her meals. A bottle or cup of water was on hand throughout the day for little nips.

Sounds to me like you're doing a great job! All babies are different and either love baby food or hate it. Unfortunately my 10 month old isn't a big fan, so she's increased to 6-7 nursing sessions a day to make up for not eating solids :( Your little one seems to be growing just right....my daughter weighs 18.5 lbs. if it makes you feel any better.

Keep doing what you're doing! Maybe just offer a sippy cup with meals to make sure she's getting fluids, instead of juice/water every hour....this might be making her full and not hungry for her formula bottles.

She doesn't sound small for her age. I think the average 1 year old weighs about what she weighs now.

My son is the same way. He's nursing less than he used to now that he's eating more solids. I'm giving him some formula in a cup with each meal to make up the difference. He's a very active crawler so I wanted to provide more good fat calories to make up the difference. I have no idea whether or not he is thirsty but I just think about his wet diapers and assume he's getting enough if they're full, heavy wet diapers.

Also, you could try cutting back on snacks since these may have less nutritional benefit than what's in the bottle(except for the apples), and she might take more from her bottle then. Also ask your pedi too about what to do.

You are doing great! My son who is 10 1/2 months has been the same way since he was 8 1/2 months. Hes ped. told me to do start taking a feeding away a month that way when he is a year he is off the bottle. Actually we took him off the bottle at 9 months. We out his formula in a sippy cup and he drinks everything from that. But you have your baby on a great schedule. Also comtinue to offer the juice and water that way it helps keep them from getting constipated and hydrated.
