Hello moms! My 9 1/2 month old boy keeps gagging himself. Like he found his dangly thing in the back of his throat. He constantly is gagging himself. Please help. He will throw up all of his food minutes after I feed it to him. should I put something on his fingers that tastes bad? I get frustrated.

What can I do next?

My dd did that for awhile - I always thought she was doing it to get a rise out of me, but I think I finally attributed it to teething. My son (11 months) has been doing it for a few weeks. It does pass! :)

Oh no, I have been there too. My son gagged himself at about that age too and for about 6 weeks or so. It seemed to happen when he was sitting in his highchair and I was trying to get something done or when he was in his car seat and I was trying to drive. The worst thing is that I am a puke-o-phobe and it would drive me nuts! Try as hard as you can not to make a big deal out of it and redirect him to something else. Sticking a pacifier in his mouth was helpful and getting him down from his highchair asap to play worked too. There was no solution for the car and that was the only time that he actually threw up on himself. I tried putting a little Tabasco sauce on his fingers, but he actually liked it and just sucked it off and smiled!! As they say, "This too shall pass".

I totally understand the frustration. My oldest didn't ever put his fingers in his mouth to gag, but has a really strong gag reflex and used to puke his food up constantly. It was around that age (9mos) too. After he was totally on solids it calmed down a bit, and now that he's 3 he only does it when he doesn't feel well. It sounds like you are fortunate enough it's something that will go away once he realizes puking isn't fun, loses interest in his throat, and stops doing it. Just have patience with him, and don't worry too much about the lost food. It will come to an end. That may sound lame, but something I'm learning with my boys... I get worked up over things that really don't matter that much.:) I used to freak out when my son puked the meal I'd just fed him, it was just soooo frustrating to me. After the millionuth time, I quietly cleaned it up and offered him more food with a loving smile on my face.

My daughter did that for a little while, I tried to ignore it. She never hit the point of vomiting, and I think she was just experimenting. I chalked it up as figuring out her body, and just tried to ensure she wasn't hurting herself. I think that overreaction will encourage behavior, and I tend to get frustrated when I can't control someone/something else.
I try to remember that everything she's done from infancy up to 3-4 years is experimentation, how else do to learn about the world?

Keep up the good work mommin'!

Just continue to remove his hands and try and keep them occupied. It is normal, my daughter did this as she chewed on her fingers for a while and would get them too far back and once she figured out this gagging thing it was a pain. Like your son she puked a few times. It is a phase, don't say much but "yucky" and remove his hands every time they are even close to his mouth. It will pass! :)

Hey there,

Yep,pretty common. dont fret about it. He will outgrow it. I know it can be disgusting and frustrating, but you have to just let them get through some of these phases with out too much drama.

I would ignore it. He's just discovered part of his body and experimenting. He will probably grow out of it soon.
