Mildew on Clothes

Just had this happen with my little ones t-shirt- so frustrating! I soaked it in oxyclean overnight and it came out. Hopefully it will work for you too.

this has been almost no-fail for me (including two year old mildew):

1. thoroughly saturate the stain(s) with SHOUT (must be shout - nothing else has worked for me)
2. Fold over on itself so Shout cannot dry up and let sit for 24 hours.
3. Run your Soak cycle and allow garment to soak in TIDE regular detergent (again, must be TIDE - it's the only brand that has worked for me) in hottest water possible for garment for 1 hour.
4. Run a short pre-wash (add no additional detergent from soak).
5. Run a final cycle, the longest and hottest possible for your garment and your machine, using TIDE regular detergent.
6. The stains should be out now! If they're not, don't dry it. Run the process a second time. If it doesn't work the 2nd time, it's not going to work. :) If it has worked and you then need to wash the outfit in a baby detergent, do so now before drying it.

I have gotten some UNBELIEVABLE stains out this way. I just went through my 4-year-old daughter's baby clothes and saw, to my horror, that i had saved some for posterity without washing them. they ran the gamut from crusty to mildewed to mystery-stained, and this method worked on EVERY SINGLE garment, except for the two I dealt with that had color dyes that ran and sat for three years.

I have found that you can get almost any stain out by using Shout Advance (works WAY better than Spray N Wash) and Chlorox 2. I saturate with the Shout then pour on some Chlorox 2. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then scrub with a soft toothbrush.

My son wrote all over a pair of khaki shorts with an ink pen and it got that out, so I would imagine it would work with mildew, too.

When this happened to me I went online and did a search on how to remove mildew stains. I found a website (I don't remember which one) where moms were discussing getting mildew out of cloth diapers that had sat in the diaper pail too long. One said she soaks overnight in a sinkful of water with Biz detergent. This works great! I use it on all my kids stains. My neighbor also recommended using Greased Lightning all purpose cleaner. This even takes out the red clay dirt from the baseball field.

When my kids were little and we lived in Florida, I used Tilex mildew remover. I sprayed it on and watched it disappear. It was better than shout. Clorox would have bleached the outfit. But, Tilex did not as long as I didn't walk away from the outfit and put it in the washing machine right after I got the mildew off.

try soaking it in oxy clean mixed with water for awhile...

Try soaking it in any type of vinegar for a few hours and then washing it like normal but also use oxyclean powder added to the load. My daughter had some pants that she hid on me that she had wet. when I found them they had mildew on them I really didn't want to throw them away so I decided to at least try vinegar to see if it would get rid of the mildew and it did. you have nothing to lose and a very cute outfit to gain.

Have you tried oxiclean? Just a thought. I hope it all works out. Let us know what happens. It would be great to know what to do.

Try shout or maybe that Oxyclean

I had that happen to a bib that had gotten buried under stuff. It was only a bib so I wasn't worried about ruining it so I sprayed it with shout, enough to make it seep in. I let it sit for about an hour and then washed it. I had to do this quite a few times...but it worked. You have the time before Halloween so it is worth a try...Good Luck!!!!

I have had a lot of success with Clorox 2. I mix 1/2 cup of Clorox 2 with hot water and put it in a small covered container. Make sure the clothing is completely covered and then let it set. Sometimes it took a couple of hours but it worked! Good Luck!

Simple Green, great idea. I use simple green for cleaning around the house all the time and I forgot that it can also be used for laundry. You can purchase simple green at home depot for $5-10 and it's a huge jug (I think 1 gallon) of concentrate. I use it for mopping, cleaning counter tops, and even for pressure washing the house. I would definitely give it a try. I also love oxy clean so that too might work. My favorite stain remover is the premixed oxy clean. It comes in a blue bottle and is available at grocery stores and discount stores. It gets out everything from grease to ink. I don't know if it would work on mildew or not, but it's worth a try.

If the stors still have a product called "Simple Green" that should take the mildew out.
