It has come to my realization that I may not be the best teacher of mathematics. I get it, but I just don't know how to teach it to my 6th grade sons. I need a reliable mathematics program taught via computer or DVD that is a complete program that will adequately challenge them and prepare them for college maths over the next 5 years. Thank you!!

What can I do next?

Teaching Textbooks is awesome and they have a 6th grade level and up through high school algebra, geometry, calculus etc. It's a text and computer program that will go through the reading with the student, highlighting notes. The student can check work and the program will work through the problem with them step by step. We transitioned over to using this with my 13 year old from using Making Math Meaningful (which is scripted and very concept oriented (you start working on algebraic thinking from level 1 on) and Mastering mathematics which your littlest one could use for learning the facts (has games and flash cards workbooks) when getting to first grade age. Rainbow Resource Catalog (www.rainbowresource.com to order a phonebook sized catalog) has many great reviews for products and helped me narrow down what texts I wanted to use. Don't be discouraged! You don't have to run to a tutor just yet. There are tools out there still that can help you teach! We're off to do math :)

What text are they using? My son is in 6th grade and they use the Holt books, they are all online and give tutorials. Wish they did it with science, I can handle teaching the Math, the science is the problem... and why are we teaching it anyway? Or do you home school? Lol

have you tried having a private tutor handling the mathmatics? Sometimes a different perspective and temperment helps. We use Creative Tutors to tutor our kids last year. Ask them for Yolanda or Shary.

We love Switched on Schoolhouse (by Alpha Omega Publications). It is computer based with lessons laid out and tests/quizzes all built in. It's GREAT!!! You can buy just the subjects you want or you can buy them in a bundle. I believe their website is www.aop.com Best of luck! Let us know what you find! :)

I have been in your place! We used Math-u-see, and really liked it. It works really well for visual learners! You definitely still need to be prepared to do some supplemental teaching (reviewing, really) when the questions may come (if they do), but it's very easy to do by previewing the lesson. If you regularly prepare for lessons, this should be no problem. Look into it, and let me know what you think. You're doing great!~ I know these things really challenge our hearts at times!
