Looking for a Jeweler for Appraisals near Bolingbrook, Illinois

Hello all,

I am looking for a trustworthy jeweler who can appraise my jewelry. I guess we are supposed to put expensive things on our homeowners insurance, right? My sister had a couple of things appraised for $25 each. That could get expensive. But I don't want to be cheap if it means getting my jewelry swapped with glass and plastic. (Some old investigative report on TV has me scared).

Also, has anyone sold their scrap gold? Do you have any advice?

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thank you for everyone's advice. I am going to save the personal recommendations of jewelers and compare with my parent's suggestion of Zabler's in Clarendon Hills. (So far away, sigh.) I was pleased to hear the specific advice about insurance. Now I know why my grandmother simply hid her jewelry in the lazy susan.

Thank you again,
J.

There was a consumer report online a few weeks ago about the cash for gold companies. They did a comparison with those and pawn shops. They bought the same gold ring for $193. They sent it to Cash for Gold, Buy Gold and another mail in place. The Cash for Gold only gave $10, the other places were a little better but not really great. The Pawn shop gave the best exchange. The problem with mail in companies that they mentioned was that you really have no choice as to what you will get for the item. You can't tell them no thanks. At a Pawn shop you might be able to haggle a bit. They also mentioned that although gold itself is high, that price is for pure gold and you should expect lower amounts for 10K, 14K, etc since it is mixed with other metals. The article siad that if you can hold off, then do that but if yu really need to you should visit a couple of pawn shops before deciding. I hope this helps. For your appraisals, my sil was able to negotiate a price with a jeweler for appraisals. She took maybe 8 items to a jeweler for appraisals. The cost would have been $28 each but she was able to have all done for $100 or so.

Naperville Jewlers has always been helpful for our needs. It's a nice family owned business with a guy and his wife. The are just off of North Aurora Road and between Odgen and Rt. 59.

Try Daruiz Jewelers in Downtown Downers Grove. I dodn't know what they charge for appraisals, but everyone there is very friendly and you can see their work area from the store. Ask for Bill.

Hi J.,
After I lost a gold bracelet that my husband gave for an anniversary gift, I called my insurance company to file a claim. Since the bracelet cost under our $1,000 deductible, I received nothing. I decided to get a separate jewelry policy for all my stuff. Your jewelry is covered 100% with no deductible. I got appraisals at Stones Jewelry in Wheaton. It is a little drive for you, but I've been going there for years and they are extremely trustworthy. I think when I called to inquire about cost for appraisals, they said 3-4 pieces cost $30.00. You should call to confirm, because I can't remember exactly. Anyway, I expected to pay around $300.00 and when I went to pick up the appraisals, they only charged me $30.00. I couldn't believe it. I had purchased about half my jewelry there, so I think that's why I got such a great price on the appraisals, but they're wonderful. Good Luck! S.

My daughter had her engagement ring made at Costello Jewelers in Naperville from jewelry which I had from the early 1970's. They were very thorough, appraised my jewelry and decided which diamonds to use for her ring. It is in downtown Naperville. Since the ring was made through that company, I do not have a cost because it was done as a unit price.

you should contact your ins. company to see sbout scheduling your personal pieces. if you get robbed or you have a loss,, then the only scheduled pieces (over 1000.00) are covered. i only have my wedding ring (8000.00) and one pair of earrings valued at around 1500.00 scheduled and it cost me 150.00 extra each year. seems kinda steep until you lose something!! good luck finding a jeweler.

Hi J. -
I have never sold jewelery, but, the most trustworthy jeweler we know is P. Martin Jewelers in Lisle. The owner (Paul) is my husband's very good friend and we go there for everything. He meets with all clients personally & you can schedule an appt if you would like.
Good luck.
