Leaking Avent Bottles

I have a 7-month-old son and we use the Avent bottles for pumped breast milk. We have used them without instance since he was about 6 weeks old but lately they have started leaking. This has never been a problem before. Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone know if there is a fix for this? I have checked AGAIN and AGAIN to be sure they are together properly and they are.

What can I do next?

We had this problem and called the Avent hotline and we were told we were screwing them too tight. They said the proper way to tighten them is to have the cap on the lid as you are screwing them. Hold on to the cap and then screw it onto the bottle. By holding on to the cap you can not over tighten and it worked.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I hate those bottles! They would soak my son. They leak under the top where it screws on. I stopped using them since he went to a sippy cup but if I hadn't I would have contacted the company.

We have only used the Avent bottles with our son who is 11 weeks old. When we bought them I asked the lady at Babies R Us because I had heard that they leak. She said it depends on how tight you screw on the nipple. If you screw it on super tight it leaks, I tell my husband not to do this as his bottles seem to leak.

I know it doesn't make much sense but it works for me!

You should not be using those bottles anyway--Avent has not yet gone BPA-free in their plastics. Recent studies have shown that plastics that contain Bisphenol A are not safe for human consumtion at all. I used Avent for 6 months and, when I learned about all of this BPA business, immediately chucked them and bought Born Free bottles b/c the Avent nipples work in them as well. They are a bit more expensive and have an extra part to wash, but it is well worth it to rid yourself of these potentially damaging chemicals. You can research the effects of ingesting BPA online and there are now many manufacturers making BPA free plastic bottles. Just for reference, the Today Show said that any plastic with the recycling numbers 3, 6, or 7 are not safe for human consumtion--check all your kitchen plastics!!! Gerber plastic baby food containers, plastic applesauce cups, some yogurt containers, most pudding cups etc are unsafe plastic. I try to use glass in my kitchen at all times for storage and heating of my food and I no longer put any plastics in the microwave or dishwasher. I suspect that these studies will ultimately reveal that all plastics are not as safe as we once thought. Sorry for my rant--I've done a lot of research on this and it is a hot button issue for me, as I feel guilty for poisoning my daughter for 6 months with unsafe bottles--just wanted to share what I've learned with you. Either way, you are supposed to replace any baby bottles every 6 months anyway, so you're due for new ones anyhow--that's probably why they are leaking. Take care.

My friend used Avent and had leakage problems. We used the Playtex nursers and rarely had issues. Hope you find something that works for you.

yes we had problems with them when we used them for both kids age 4 and 2. You have to make sure that it is lined up right. then make sure that you do not over tighten them. We would always shack them over the sink to make sure that they would not leak. It got to the point that my husband could tell if they were not on right when he was across the room from me. We did not have the problem when we used the toddler tops on the bottle or the toddler tops and cup. just the bottle.

I used the Avent system with both of my children and loved it. I noticed that if you overtighten the caps, they do start to leak, once we figured that out, I did not have any more problems. Hope that helps.

We experienced this when my girl was an infant. Normally the bottles would be fine, but every now and then they would leak at the top. My husband figured out they leaked when he made the bottles and decided it was because he tightened the top too much. I was skeptical, but it he stoped over-tightening the tops and the leaking stopped. I hope this works for you. We only had the leaks with avent bottles.

Hey!

Boy, do I hate Avent bottles. I know they are great for the baby, but the leaking can drive you nuts. There are usually two causes for it, the first is that even if they look like they are on properly (and you turn it as hard as you can) - they're not. They can miss that first thread, so they tighten on the others and it makes it feel like they have turned closed all the way, but they don't. I found this was particularly true if I bought a separate supply of new tops - they had a greater likelihood of not getting on properly. If this is the problem, then you need to take the top all the way off, settle the rim all the way on to the bottle, then tighten. It feels different when you do it right - although that difference is hard to note when you are sleep deprived at 3:00am. The second cause might be if you are using their weird three types of nipples in one where you turn the nipple to the right place for more or less flow. I never got them to work properly and they leaked all over the place.

Sorry you are wrestling with that . . . I always felt like I was dripping liquid gold around when it was pumped milk. :-)

We used Dr Browns and found they leaked when:

1.) the tops were on too tight

or

2.) the tops were screwed on when heating heat them (heat them up with the tops on loosely or off completely, and then put them on when warmed.)

Good luck!

I fought with Avent bottles for 5 months with my second child. I never did get them to work and went back to cheap but effective evenflo bottles.
My thought was that the plastic on the Avent bottles warped slightly in the dishwasher making the connection not as secure. The manufacturer told me it was possible but I never really got clarity on the issue.
Best wishes,
mommy to ds8, dd6, dd3

hi,
i do remember that happening to me! it was a couple of years ago now, and i can't remember a fix...except to make sure the hole that the milk comes out of is the right size...i didn't breast feed, but if the milk is "thinner" (?) you may need a slow flow nipple...good luck!

YES, I hate it when that happens!! Especially when it was breast milk. I haven't heard about the over tightening idea, I will defiantly have to try that. I just turn it upside down to see if it puddles in the rim, or shake it really hard (over the sink of course). If it is leaking I just unscrew it, spin the rim so that it screws on in a different spot and re-tighten it again. I have also found that it sometimes it a bottle or just the rim. I have even taken an hour or so to go through all of my bottles and rims to find the "culprit" and thrown it away. I am glad to hear that I am not the only person who has this issue. AVENT SHOULD REALLY DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!

Sometimes the nipples may get old and mishapen. Try replacing the nipples with new ones.

I bought Avent sippy cups when my first son weaned thinking they'd be great, but they leaked all over the place too. My brother says they're "over-engineered." He did the same thing buying them and replacing them. I know you don't really want to replace the bottles, but you might consider some Dr. Brown's bottles instead. There's a Baby Fare coming up soon at Cobb Galleria Center, and it's a great place to look at products and get samples. Good luck.

We too, had this problem with our 9 motnh old's Avent bottles. As another poster said if you over-tighten the collar of the bottle they will leak horribly. It even says that in the directions that we got with our bottles. We ended up throwing them away and got Born Free bottles when we had to switch her to formula. We love them and no leaks!!

My bottles do this if I screw this on wrong...with Avent it has to be just right or else you got a leak...that's been my experience with my 5 month old.
