Recommendation on Bottles

I have been using the Playtex drop ins for my daughter. I've recently weened her and am bottle feeding exlusively and find that the Playtex bottles are a pain and not great for the environment. I am looking to switch to a BPA free bottle. Any recommendations. I haven't heard great things about the Avent brand (leaks) or Dr. Brown's (too many parts to wash). Any advice would be much appreciated.

What can I do next?

I tried using the First Year bottles that have a nipple inside of a nipple. He liked them at first, but now won't drink a bottle at all. But I've heard good things about them.

Hi J.,

I tried a couple different brands, but found that my daughter worked with the Avent bottles the best. They're easy to clean and offer the transistion tools to go from bottle to sippy cup when the time comes :)

True, Avent does leak, but as long as you don't overtighten the cap, you should be fine. (I found that if you shake the bottle prior to feeding, you'll be ok).

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I used Evenflo glass bottles for my daughter. They also come in BPA free plastic. I liked the glass when I was feeding her, but the plastic was helpful when she started to self-bottle feed. The nipples are the same for the glass and plastic.
I found the bottles on line, but didn't ever find them at any stores.
Good luck!

I used others too. My cousin is a nurse and a mother of 2 and grandmother of 2. She said to use Dr. Browns. They now make BPA free bottles and they cut downs my son's gas problems dramatically! I really like them.

Dr. Brown's are awesome but yes WAY too many parts to clean. After about a month you'd regret them & wished you bought something else. But they are wonderful have them BPA free.
But this time I am going to try the NUK brand but that is because I am planning on nursing & bottle feeding & do not want my son to love the bottle more. My first who used the Dr. Brown's wanted nothing to do with me after using the Dr. Brown's & NUK is supposed to be more like moms breast. So I haven't used them yet (one more week until the babe is born). But they look like they will work well & I already filled with water to check leakage factor & they seem fine. I even found some that are BPA free too!! I also have heard from other moms they work very well & no leaking.

For BPA-free bottles, I like Born Free (www.newbornfree.com). There's a new one called Adiri (www.adiri.com) which also looks good, but I haven't tried it. Some babies are picky about nipples, so you might need to try a few.

Good luck!

Dr. Browns may have more to wash but they are well worth it especially if you have a baby that spits up alot.

We use the drop ins for more than one feeding. We wash them in hot, soapy water and store them in the fridge to inhibit bacterial growth. It makes them a little more environmentally-friendly that way.

I've been really happy with the MAM brand bottles. They sell them on AMazon, and I've seen them at Rite Aid and Walmart.
Target also sells them- http://www.target.com/gp/search/601-###-###-####-###-###-...

(BTW- should you stick with the drop-in's and live close to Tewksbury, please let me know as I have about 100 of the liners that I am no longer using!) ;)

I use the Avent bottles with the drop in liners and have had no problems. I love them and they are BPA free. I think they are hard to find in stores thought. I ordered mine from Amazon.

Hi Julie, I am a mom of 3 (youngest is 15 mos old) and I just used the basic (cheap) bottles from Walmart. They say BPA free right on them. They were the best choice for me.

Hi J.,

We have ahd great luck with the glass Evenflo bottles - they're inexpensive and come in 4oz and 8oz sizes. I bought them at Babies R Us. They cam ewith latex nipples which I replaced with silicone ones right away. The bottles are easy to clean, and very durable. My son likes to toss his across the wood kitchen floor and we've never had one break. Not sure how they would do on a stone floor, however.

How old is your daughter? Have you considered moving to a sippy? Nuby makes a good one that is easy to clean and has a soft silicone spout.

I also recommend reading up on plastics at IATP.org. They have a very informative article called, "Smart Plastics Guide - Healthier Food Uses of Plastics".

Good Luck!

Hi J..
I would really recommend getting a BPA free bottles. I don't think Avent makes one yet and yes they can leak if you don't screw them on correctly. If your daughter has gas issues/ reflux I would recommend the Dr. Brown polypropylene. If there aren't any concerns, I really like the Nuby products and bottles. The 11oz Nuby non-drip (3pk) (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2864052) is what I use for bottle feedings. They are BPA free and less expensive. My daughter was having a hard time with the non-drip nipple that nuby sells with its bottle, so I've been using the evenflo nipple which works great with these bottles.

For other BPA free stuff, check out:

I just ditched my son's Avent bottles (they leak like you said) for the old school Evenflo ones. I found some on amazon.com that are BPA-free plastic. They also sell the glass ones. They're WAY BETTER: easy to clean, don't leak at all, and by the way, much cheaper than the other "fancier" brands.

Hi J......I know this sounds very old fashioned but if you can find some new or even used " glass " bottles you will always be safe. Number one because they don't absorb any bacteria and you don't have to always be running to the store to make sure you have the " slip ins ".

Blessings to you, P.

The born free also have a couple extra parts to wash, and do sometimes leak, but not when you get the hang of them. That said, they are BPA free and easy to use. You could also try glass bottles which are becoming more widely available again.

I have always used the regular old Evenflow bottles. This time around, though, with the BPA scares and things i got several "BPA free" bottles from Wal-mart. The package is marked BPA free so i know it's safe.

Buy one package, see how your little one does and if she likes it buy more. I think the bpa free bottles from walmart are three bucks for three. At this point you probably don't need to spend a ton of money on bottles to reduce bubbles and all that.

Sassy MAM bottles are great- BPA free and also have very natural nipples. We've used them exclusively for our 9 month old without problems.

Avent were great for us. They leak when you don't get the top screwed on just right, but if you shake it first, you'll know if it's ok.

Good luck!
